Premier League discussing changes that could save Leicester City millions in the transfer market
The Foxes and their peers could be in for a transfer kitty boost

Changes to the regulations surrounding agent fees in the Premier League could clubs in the top-flight millions in the transfer market.

The 20 shareholders of Premier League clubs are due to meet on Friday, where a proposal to cut down the fees payable to representatives of players during the summer and winter transfer windows will be discussed.

One of the main changes on the cards is the scrapping of dual regulation, which would see the end of agents being able to command a fee from both the selling and buying club.

Agent fees have become a major talking point in recent years and there are currently no limits or caps involved for work undertaken by an agent in relation to a transfer or contract negotiations - but a report from the Telegraph suggests that is about to change.

If proposals go ahead, clubs in the Premier League could save a significant amount in the market - as it has been revealed that clubs in the top-flight paid a total of £260m between February 2018 and January 2019.

During that period, Liverpool forked out around £43.8m and Chelsea paid £26.9m, while Manchester City paying £23.5m in agent fees and Manchester United following with £18m - the four highest figures of Premier League clubs.

Further changes are on the cards with FIFA discussing a potential framework with the Premier League for how transfers and agent payments are regulated moving forward, which could include an exam system for these representatives.

As members of the public, when we have any form of representative i.e. a solicitor, barrister, estate agent etc, we have to pay ourselves. Why should agents be any different in football, it's down to the player to represent himself or more wisely get a trustable agent. This overnight would stop millions of pounds being extracted from football clubs and ultimately football itself surely?

I believe agents do have a role to play in the sport. Someone experienced needs to be in the negotiations to stand up for the footballers interests. You have to remember when negotiations are happening they are worth millions of pounds and you'll have a really young footballer negotiating with a billion pound company. It's only fair that the footballer has someone to support them.

Great news.  They are leeches.   Look at the Cardiff/Sala transfer.  The cream offs there, had this not ended in terrible circumstances, was nothing short of shocking.  As Agents are paid for by the Clubs, I guess players do not give a tom-tit about these pirates that bring NOTHING to the game.

I absolutely agree but the payment of the agents should be made by the players hiring their expertise and not the club's. If you buy a house, which would be a considerable transaction for the normal person, you would hire and pay for a suitably qualified solicitor to suitably represent you. You wouldn't expect the seller of the house to pay it so where's the difference. Good respected proven agents who deal with their clients interests at heart would still find ample work as word of mouth would get round from player to player. The fly by nights would go out of business. Agents fees would be cut overnight as players would in most cases be able to pay the rediculous and corrupt fees that clubs have to. The current system allows for the agent to get a huge bung from a club to get a particular player for them regardless of the interests of the player.

The genie is out of the bottle - the players trust their representatives. It’s rammed down their throats that the clubs will take advantage if they aren’t looked after

you can stop them taking at both ends as that is a straight conflict of interest but I suspect this will not reduce costs as they will get someone else to ‘represent’ the club who they agree being involved.

I cant really see how this ends well ....

Agree totally that agents have been creaming it both ways for far too long and the way they tout players around and start rumours of interest etc bump up the transfer values/wages etc are sometime nothing short of criminal.

However, it is not unusual, in many circumstances for agents/representatives fees and costs to be paid by the buyer in many walks of life not just football. If the agent can get the buying club to cover their fees then that is good business which should then in theory save the selling club/player, however far too often it seems they are getting their cake and eating it.

Many clubs also approach agents to check availability of their clients etc and so when they squeal foul it is sometimes hypocritical of them.

Whatever, it is about time regulations were put into force limiting the commission earned. whether the final bill is paid by one party or the other, or even divvied up it should be open honest and fair. If the buying club is happy to pay the sellers costs then that is up to them, particularly if they have made the first approach, but this "double bubble" culture should be stopped.

Always makes me laugh. The evil rich trying to regulate the evil rich.  Well at least they took a break from screwing us over for a few minutes.

Everybody will get paid what they want, as much as they want, when they want it .....and there's nothing the government or the FA is going to do about it. It will just disappear from plain sight.

It is corruption after all. Just the cost of doing business.

Corruption, by its definition is illegal ..... this isn’t. I think that’s the point really !!

If it isn't corruption yet I'm sure they'll make it so. Not questioning intent of the regulation just extremely pessimistic.

Jorge Mendes can get to ****. I wonder how this will affect his nice little money laundering business with FOSUN and Wolves?

Jorge will find another way - looking at the  wolves figures tells me he already has !
