It makes more sense to get everyone actually playing a similar number of test matches first.

What is there currently 12 test playing nations? You either have a tournament like you've suggested, 4 groups of 3, first in each group goes in to a straight knockout last 4, winners play the final.

Or if you make the championship two tier, everyone still plays each other but say Australia beat Zimbabwe it's reflected in points so they'd get less than beating India. Obviously it'd have to be fair with every top tier nation playing 2 second tier sides or whatever.

Countries such as Sri Lanka & The combined West Indies islands rely heavily on tourism & Test cricket attracts lots of to travellers from these shores. They will suffer  badly if they are playing Zimbabwe, Afghanistan etc regularly & not England or India.

I didn't say don't play the big sides? I just said the bigger nations should have results against those nations reflected in the points won

Don't need a test championship at all, just have a regular tour calendar where everyone tours every where at some point, for varying amounts of time.

Part of the joy of test cricket is seeing it played in different parts of the world, don't need to see India v Australia every year.

Agree with this mainly.

Over a period of 2-3 years everyone needs to be playing the same amount of tests. Sadly I think the horse has already bolted because of all the smaller format competitions and tours these days

Copious ODI and T20 tours.

IPL

SA20

Big Bash

CPL

The godforsaken Hundred.

That's where the money is for the most part.

As much as we all love Test Cricket and it keeps producing some strategically formidable contests, it's just not as attractive any more for the main. Sadly.

I don't even want to see India vs Aus each year lol (especially after this latest series!). But that's where it gets too saturated. Instead of having different points won compared to the nation you're playing, maybe have bigger nations play more away tests so they're not always given the advantage of home crowds/surfaces. And relegation can happen to anyone.

The main benefit I guess is that it creates a physical reward for doing well, and you'd hope that in turn keeps pushing the big nations to take test cricket seriously.

They definitely need to bin off the coin toss, just let the touring side decide

How much crossover in reality is occurring with the T20 competitions?

To my eyes, it appears the Kiwis and South Africans internationals do a lot of them while there's crossover with IPL & Aus/England players. Big Bash aligns with Aussie's home test series.

Surely there's an argument to have an agreed, aligned calendar with the potential of load management on players as well.

Until there is a commitment to playing regular Test cricket and giving all nations a good amount of revenue we will continue like this.

The obsession with meaningless white ball tournaments and formats is the main problem. When it is more lucrative to play 10 over cricket in the Middle East in front of virtually nobody than host another country in a Test series you know the game has gone.

Even this could be turned into a league in some way. Double round robin but points only given for overall series results to help nations for whom hosting longer series isn't commercially viable - say you give 7 for a series win, 3 each for a drawn series and a point for the losing side if the margin of victory was one game (2-1 or 3-2).

Agree with the @Tommy Fresh World Cup idea, using County Championship style bonus points as deciders in the event of draws. You'd probably always have to hold it here for it to be remotely commercially viable though.

I don't even think the two division idea is terrible, but we all know it'll be executed poorly as a stich-up between the Greedy Three, the fixture list will become boring and, eventually, fans will start voting with their feet when theyre being asked to shell out daft money to watch the same tourists every other year.

Really good wasn't it

It's great to watch. Especially when he's coming in under pressure with his team 4 or 5 down within 10 overs.

Jimmy Anderson has signed a one year deal with Lancashire.

He should make mincemeat of Div 2 batters, especially with so much of the season taking part scandalously early.

Got to rate his commitment to wanting to play.
