If that was the case then why wasn't the Perez accidental handball penalised leading up to Tielemans goal at Wembley?

I seem to recall reading in the rule that it shouldn't be given if the ball cannons on to the player's hand from the player's own leg

Just seen Bert answered this first, I really should read the whole thread before hitting reply

What if someone directly scores with an accidental handball?

Didn't Suarez score a goal like that in the FA cup years ago? Going back to accidental handball rules isn't the answer for me, because you can still get goals scored with the use of a hand, or in the build up. Which doesn't at all feel right.

It's all so simple really. If it's hand to ball that is an offence. If it's ball to hand and in particularly from short range that is accidental.

I don't know why the authorities make such a meal of it unless, of course, it is all designed to cause confusion.

I'm fine with this. Much better than any hit of an arm automatically makes it handball HOWEVER I presumed the rule changed in the first place to remove subjectivity by the ref' but more importantly VAR. So now how does it work? Are we back in a situation where VAR is second guessing whether the on-pitch ref' has made a big enough error to miss it to over-ride their decision? Two different perspectives trying to judge intent with one also trying to judge if the other has got that judged intent wrong enough to be flagged.

IFAB actually issued clarification back in March:

https://theifab.com/news/annual-general-meeting-2021

So presumably that interpretation has been in place ever since, and Perez's handball in the build up to Tielemans' goal in the cup final was deemed accidental.

Nothing on the IFAB website saying its being brought in now before the Euros?

They do need to stop f***ing around with the rules though!

So, the clarification in March was simply that, a clarification, not a law change.

And a bit more reading on IFAB shows the clarifications made at their meeting in March have led to minor amendments to the laws for 2021-22. Presumably in part to make handball more clear:

https://theifab.com/law-changes/latest/

Law 12. Fouls and Misconduct

  • Handball:
    • Not every contact of the ball with the hand/arm is an offence
    • A player’s hand/arm position should be judged in relation to their body movement in that particular situation
    • Removal from the accidental attacking handball offence of the references to a ‘team-mate’ and ‘creating a goal-scoring opportunity’

I'm not at all confused now 🤣

So, because Maradonna was jumping at a great height and using his arm for extra leverage, it would have been a goal!

There’s a drunk ex ref in some grubby little Mexican bar who’s been arguing this for years with any stranger that sits within 6 feet of him.

Tomorrow, he will stride into the bar in full refs kit, shampooed and shaved, settle his bill, order a mineral water and announce he’s been vindicated and is off to see the Mexican fa about getting his job back, and will never frequent the said grubby bar again.

So this is a total reverse of the changes they made either 2 or 3 years ago?

They need to be even more specific about what a handball is and fine tune it ASAP, rather than change what it fundamentally is. It’s only a handball if it’s deliberate (on paper), but I can only remember a few times in history where it has been a fully deliberate handball (Maradona, Suarez in WC2010, etc).

There's been a few instances of players reacting and doing the goalkeepers job.

The problem is they tried to take out subjectivity and make it black and white, but people don't like the extra penalties and disallowed goals.

Now people complain it's not clear and ambiguous.
