Question on modern tvs - I have decent 2013 tv but not uhd or 4k. The sound for films on netflix etc is so inconsistent regardless of sound setting whereby speech is low but music or action is loud.

ย

Do the newer style of tv have this issue? Hoping and assuming not as I'd want to upgrade soon.

Does anyone else here hate that motion smoothing thing that expensive (and probably now less expensive) TVs have on them now?

ย

I think it's generally set 'on' my default, but I'd be straight into the menu settings to turn that bastard off. It makes films look like an episode of Holby City and I can't see the point of it - it certainly doesn't make them look like they do at the cinema

It seems like some bought the same tv as me! Iโ€™ve had a Panasonic 42โ€ plasma for 9 years now and itโ€™s still good today! I spent 3 months researching and spent ยฃ800 so it was money well spent! No regrets.

ย

When we wanted a Tv for the bedroom, I looked on eBay and found AO, Curryโ€™s and Hugues sell tvs at good price. Got a Samsung one for ยฃ260 last year and in the shops the same model was ยฃ450/ยฃ500. Only thing it had was a slight scratch on the back and a damaged box. The tv itself was absolutely fine.

ย

If this is your main TV, I would look at the top end of your budget, especially for a 55โ€. Question is do you need a 55โ€? Could you go smaller and spend the same and get a better picture?ย
ย

My advice is always buy a TV based on picture quality and not sound as you can do something to improve sound where as the picture is fixed.ย
ย

Have a look at the eBay shops. Theyโ€™re could be a bargain to have in there. Yes, some maybe trash but I still got full manufacture warranty and saved myself a lot of money.ย

Yes, yes yes!!!! I thought it was only me. My Samsung does it and makes the whole experience seem unnatural and really odd. I turned it off all the time! Hate it with a passionย

Maybe you get used to it after a bit.

ย

Whenever I'm round someone's house and their telly's got it I'm always tempted to turn it off while they're in the bog to see if they notice, but that would be a knob thing to do, wouldn't it?

People pay nearly a grand for a tv??

Man I'm old!

Considering how much time we spend watching it, I struggle with this as well.

ย

And that's coming from a man that spent a hundred pounds on speaker cable

Itโ€™s probably because for a fifth of the price you can still get all the key elements of what you use a TV for.

Mist of the additional is vanity based.

Yes, we have a couple of newish TVs (Samsung and a Sony), both are the same. I think it is more to do with the sound production, but can be very annoying watching a film and struggling to hear the speaking because of the background noise.

Changing sound settings a little can help.

TBF you can get a really good TV for around ยฃ600-ยฃ700. No need to spend a grand, it won't improve your TV experience. Even the most expensive TV's don't exclude adverts or prevent EastEnders being streamed.

A grand won't get you abetter picture quality and certainly won't improve sound quality. Get a less expensive TV and spend the rest on a good sound bar.

Picture quality these days is about as good as it gets, for me it's the sound quality that matters more, hence getting a good sound bar is quite important, for me anyway.

This is a good pointโ€ฆ. The way a telly sounds is equally important (maybe more)โ€ฆ. The thin crappy speakers in any modern telly are awfulโ€ฆ. Even the cheapest of cheap soundboard will improve it

ย

i did have a full 5.1 solution, but, in my new place I went for something a bit more discrete and after a bit of listening around I really liked the Sky sound bar, itโ€™s made by Diavalet who are serious audio specialistsโ€ฆ. You can get the refurbs on eBay for <ยฃ100 and they are really very good indeed (works off your sky remote too)

Any Samsung, Panasonic, LG, Sony that you can find in your budget will be fine. The only thing Iโ€™ve found is that on some of the Samsungโ€™s, the user interface is a bit laggy and unresponsive - if youโ€™re not arsed about that then I reckon youโ€™ll get the most bang for your Buck out of a Samsung.ย
ย

Donโ€™t know if you can do this on the others, but with Samsung smart TVโ€™s, you can turn your blower in to the remote via an app. Which is handy - 1. If you want to piss about with the Mrs whilst Strictly is on. 2. Youโ€™ve got a habit of losing the actual remote, like me.ย

We have a 2020 Samsung QLED. User interface is fine, and apps load instantly. Maybe depends on your internet connection.

Picture quality is good, but wish I had spent a bit more on an OLED. They are a different class.

Up until about 4 years ago I had one of them hefty big ass Panasonics which needed 2 people to lift.

My mate came round and took the p1ss but I said I'd get a new one when this one fies.

He said it wont die and he was right! A year later I bough a Panasonic 42" from John Lewis for about ยฃ350-400 and it's been brilliant.

I suppose if people are happy yo spend as much as they want , its upto them.

ย

I do rememberย  saying to the salesman I wanted to have a chat about one of the curved 60" priced at 7k. His eyes lit up but when I told him I was joking and wanted the Panasonic for ยฃ400 he looked like he wanted to hurt me!!!

Had an LG that lasted 9 years before the screen went. Bought a new LG 43 off Amazon and the screen stopped working about 6 months after the 2 year warranty went, and LG were charging more that the set itself cost to repair it.ย
ย

Went to Richer Sounds and got a Phillips 55 which has a 6 year warranty. Like it so far but it havenโ€™t yet worked out how to โ€˜AirPlayโ€™ Apple devices to it.

Thatโ€™s what I was going for to be fair. Got a great sound system, recliner chairs and film/tv posters on the wall. Would recommend it.
