Sorry to disappoint anyone who thinks this is about transvestites (I know what you lot are like).

I'm looking at buying a new television. 55 inch is the preffered size.

I've seen a few I'm interested in.

Tesco have got a 58 inch Toshiba on offer for £399, but I'm presuming it'll be rubbish with the picture quality stated at 50hz? Even though its 4kUHD.

Looking at a Samsung in Curry's for £529 which looks alright.

Not spending thousands, so I know it's not going to be absolutely incredible. But want the best possible for around £600 or under.

Any recommendations or things to steer clear of?

Honestly can't remember the last time I bought one.

Not too bothered about sound quality as I'm looking to get a sound bar too.

You could (if you shop around) get a 55” OLED for <£800

Save up for another couple of months and wait for the January sales?

Black Friday just happened of course…

My TV’s are all a bit crap and I’ve noticed the picture fading on the main tv, so, reckon I’ll stump up for something like this when the time comes…

LG OLED55A16LA 55 inch 4K UHD HDR Smart OLED TV (2021 Model) with α7 Gen4 AI processor, 4K SELF-LIT OLED, Dolby Vision IQ and Dolby Atmos, built-in Google Assistant and Alexa https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08X3RBGQ4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_NVC0TJ1EFRJCQ3HZ15A3

I would push the boat out and save double what you have saved,  You will not regret it.  Ultimately what you buy you could be stuck with for many years to come.  I shelled out on a Panasonic Plasma and almost 10 years on it's as good as the vast majority of stuff in Curry's even now.

Those Philips ambilight TVs with the built in sound bar in the stand are top quality.  I'd have one of those or a Panasonic obviously.

If you have a Costco account, they have LG, Toshiba etc at decent prices . Personally I'd go LG. Longstanding good reputation for quality and reliability. I'd avoid the cheaper Jap/Euro TV's. My brother who knows about this stuff would never buy Sony. FWIW I have a Denon sound bar. Excellent sound and very good "surround" effect, easy to link via Bluetooth to a modern TV.

A transvestite topic might have been more entertaining, though. Who knows who might have come out of the woodwork?

It's not that I can't spend more, it's more the fact it's tough to justify and the Mrs will go mental lol

Would going up to a grand make that much difference?

Spend what you want. Ride out any incoming grief. That’s my view.

Reckon the extra spend will be worth it. As said above it’s probably something you’ll have for years and use a lot.

I get enough grief for managing to get tickets to watch us play all over the country.

I'd rather still do that and keep the peace.

It's taken me 6 months to persuade her to get a new TV lol

What are you looking to use it for?  If it involves next gen gaming then you will definitely notice the difference as you will need 120Hz.  Standard TV watching, not so much.

If you factor in a separate soundbar as well you're looking at another 200 quid on top of the TV price.

TBF you can get a really good TV for around £600-£700. No need to spend a grand, it won't improve your TV experience. Even the most expensive TV's don't exclude adverts or prevent EastEnders being streamed.

A grand won't get you abetter picture quality and certainly won't improve sound quality. Get a less expensive TV and spend the rest on a good sound bar.

Picture quality these days is about as good as it gets, for me it's the sound quality that matters more, hence getting a good sound bar is quite important, for me anyway.

I bought my most recent TV from Richer Sounds on London Road in a Boxing Day sale for a great deal. I also bought my soundbar from them at the same time. If you can wait I'd have a look and see what they're doing this year, they're great to deal with, very helpful and they are fantastic with after sales support. They've even got a 'living room' at the back of the shop where you can try them out before you buy, at least they used to have.

The range they have in the Fosse Park Curry's is impressive so go there and have a look at the difference in quality. Just be mindful of the company reps who will obviously try and get you to purchase their own brand only. A good place for research and then see if you can find it cheaper online .

FWIW I agree with the other posters - every additional £200 you can spend on a TV does actually make a difference. Go check them out and see if you can see the difference. Also, be sure to factor in price of upgrading your Netflix/Sky accounts to UHD (which to be fair isn't too much extra)

That looks a great buy.

Panasonic OLED is what I’ll get when I’m ready. I’ve still got a Panasonic plasma TV and it won’t die, picture is still really good.

I’ve had 2 LG TVs in that time and I think the latter of the two will die before the Panasonic does.

The sound quality is far superior too.

The LG amazon link above is ok but it's only a 60hz screen.  That's no good for either PS5 or Xbox series X.  Hence this is why I bought a 4k monitor that is at a fraction of the cost.

I would wait it out until January and see what happens to prices on 2021 models.  Anytime up until March is key for buying top end at a lower price since the 2022 models will then begin to appear.

My old Panasonic plasma only needed to be replaced when my daughter broke the screen and tried to blame the dog lol It didn't need a soundbar and the picture was great, I loved it.

I was recommended buying a Panasonic plasma by a guy I know who works  in visual entertainment a number of years back when they were all rage. I wanted a tv I could use in the garden in the summer for bbq/football parties which you could still see in the sun, which they do. Being indestructible is a bonus

Funny story, someone I know bought a new lcd tv a few months ago, set it up in the living room, started watching it and then thought it still had a screen protector on it so he started picking the corner away only to realise it was the actual screen he was pulling off…took it back though and got a replacement.

TV's are a real minefield in my opinion.

You'll spend a small fortune on a brilliant TV only for it to be out dated in a couple of months.

I have a 4k TV, which i thought was the dogs dangles a few years back when i got it. Now it seems completely out dated in comparison with OLED's etc....

I think there's a healthy compromise between  what you can afford and whats good. It's a mugs game constantly upgrading because unless you are absolutely minted, you'll never have the best - and - even if you could afford the best, its very much down to personal opinion as to what even is the best.

HDMI has now been upgraded to 2.1 for the next gen consoles - Something else to lure custom. It's been endless hasn't it really? Curved Screens were all the jazz, 3D glasses were all the jazz, QLED, OLED, 4K, 8K....

The main thing is to get a reputable company to buy from for piece of mind. John Lewis and their 5 year warranty is always a safe bet, especially with their price match.

Either spend big or go for a budget tv. Inbetween isn’t worth it in my opinion.

spending big will get you something very decent  for quite a few years to come, if you go  budget then you’ll be ready to buy again in a few years time when the ‘ next generation’ of tvs come out in a few years time. But you’ll have to pay again, of course.
