Hope it's not deliberate..

It usually isn't, just very dry and very windy, and tbh it doesn't really matter if it is deliberate, the results are the same

Exactly.

As well as them getting larger in terms of regularity and ferocity year on year.

Indeed. It's certainly the only place we've ever lived with an escape plan that potentially doesn't really work. Burning mountains behind our house and 300m from the beach which only works as a short term escape until the smoke gets us.

We house sit in a beautiful villa in the Algarve hills over the summer and that one scares me a bit too. No real escape route, and not many years since many residents burned to death in their cars trying to escape a fire

Also, humidity consistently above 50%. Ugh.

‘feels like’ temps widely predicted 40/42c (yes even in the midlands) Tues-Thurs

we could potentially break the actual temp record of 40c (in June - we’d expect that in July or early part Aug )

yes it’s weather not climate but the CC predictions that the extremes become more extreme and more regular become ever

more real.

Well, that's just grim.

How long until new builds have air con as standard? Can see it going that way.

Yeah, if i wasn’t renting I’d be having a unit installed, for the bedrooms at least.

Currently in a new build and the insulation is really good, which means once the heat is in, it sticks around.

Put this in the humble brag thread, but getting AC fitted 4 years ago was inspired. Bordering essential with young kids in the house too.

Throughout the whole house? How's it hit the electric bill?

You can get ones that don't need to be fitted can't you?

Noisy

Have a hose that pushed hot air out through an opening (usually a slightly open window but with a plastic piece of kit to keep the hot air out

It's not too bad really as thankfully when the AC is needed the panels are providing quite a bit of juice.  I've also been quite militant and only tend to use it before bed to get myself and the kids off to sleep.  Leccy bill probably gone from £150 to £175 since I got them but given there's two EV cars and a battery being charged it's pretty hard to me to say exactly what contribution the units made.  It's a single pump outside with 4 units inside (living room and 3 bedrooms).  I do know people who get whoppers fitted on landings to cool the entire place but quite happy with the solution we got.

The Mrs said no as she hates the units. I've been rubbing it in ever since.

There should be off the shelf options that sit in the loft and just has a vent into the rooms below. Bedrooms only is enough for me too.

I had the exactly same battle so you have my sympathy.  I somehow won by pointing out that we have radiators in every room.

In fairness, I hate the look of radiators as much as the AC units, so i have sympathy.

We have been installing ceiling fans like these in every room as we decorate and they make a huge difference. We prefer the ones without the exposed blades as they look less 1980s but they are really handy and not expensive.

Anyone else considering just how messed up things are when there is serious discussion on this forum and other fora in the UK about air conditioning becoming a necessity rather than a luxury?

Yeah, I had one. It was really good to be fair, if not a little noisy. I didn’t properly fit the pipe (think tumble drier through wall job) so I had it draped out of the window. It would easily take a room from ~30c down to 22c in an hour and wasn’t overly expensive to run, as it isn’t constantly running the compressor.

Believe me, walking from the hallway which was ~30c into a 22c room felt like walking into a fridge!
