Isn’t this as simple as giving him a new contract was cheaper than buying an alternative?

Similar to re-signing Vardy at the age of 38, even on £140k per week, it’s cheaper than shelling out millions on transfer fees.

Fail to prepare... we know the rest.

We did shell out on his replacement though, we spent 10mil on Okoli. We already had Faes, Coady and Ben Nelson as options, it's not like we are shy of Vestergaard level centre backs.

I think Nelson needed time so the plan was always for him to get loaned out.

However, maybe I’m being too generous as I’m still at a loss to explain why we purchased Couilably as we now have three right backs.

As much as he was praised last season, it was always tempered with, '...but we'll need someone better in the Premier League.'

Shame Rudkin hadn’t cleared his ears out that morning and heard ‘he’s just what we need in the Premier League’….

We would have been better just letting him go and keeping Souttar in the squad than loaning him out.

I think the plan was to sell Souttar.

I think he’s fairly solid and I’d have used him this season. However he’s never really got a look in under successive head coaches.

Again though, when you consider we had Evans, Soyuncu, Amartey, Faes, Nelson and Vestergaard at the club when we signed him, you’ve got to be questioning our recruitment policy. That January was honking. We needed a bloody decent goalkeeper, not a centre back.

Or any level

He was okay last season, like many others were.

The Premier League has a massive jump in quality and it’s widening. All promoted teams will go down again after amassing a massive points total last season.

It’s a shame about his injury and Nelson to an extent. I’d feel really positive about having a fit Souttar and Nelson next season as the partnership and getting rid of at least 2 of Faes, Vestergaard and Coady.

But he is better than what we have.

I think to play at premier league level ... you've got to be a good deal better than "okay" .... in fact as a professional "okay" is not really good enough either

I meant okay in relative ability to the league he’s playing in. A premier league football “should” be closer in ability to Messi than we are to a top league 2 player.

I, for one, understood what you meant quite clearly. Think most others did as well

He wasn't 'that' amazing last season. Good on the ball but circumstances couldn't have suited him any more. Got booked something like 13 times and that isn't because he plays on the edge.

I'd love him out the door but absolutely no chance. No other club is this dumb.

He's playing really well in a back 4 against Portugal. You wouldn't think he's out of form or a poor player on this showing.

Think it's as simple as he wants to perform there and feels some form of responsibility.

He's not a BAD player in that he's a seasoned international and he's had a solid - if unimpressive - career at the very top end.

It's an attitude issue that slightly mirrors Evans basically giving up because he couldn't give a toss at the end. Obviously they're very different in terms of quality but there are parallels there

But you have to question whether THEY are the issue. You know it well from work as well. If your boss is a numpty or the business structures aren't sound, the passionate ones are those that will speak up and remonstrate first.

Playing against someone as slow as him now to be fair

He was also up against Leao, Neto and Silva. While he was solid defensively, it was his positiong, pressing and passing that stood out tonight.

Impressive showing.

I agree. Denmark played their best game in years - maybe a decade or more - and Vestergaard still stood out as motm-contender. He was immense
