BBC radio Leicestershire started broadcasting in November 1967,would anyone know when did the station start to cover Leicester City match's?

Did it start with just up dates

Second half only coverage OR

Full 90 minute coverage?

Radio Leicester, not Leicestershire. The first regional BBC station.

Suggests that City and Tigers 'news' were covered in 1968. No real detail though.

Going back to the early 80s when I was a kid listening in I can only remember updates from the match, no live commentary. The reporter then was Steve Lambden, with John Rawling in the studio!

Yeah they would interrupt the program with the goal horn if Leicester had just scored.

In the 70s they had an update about every 15 to 20 minutes, unless there was a goal scored, then they would go over to report on the goal.

On a weekend they used to take 2nd half commentary on whichever game was being commentated on, on radio 2 of then, radio 5 of now.

In the week night games, there would usually be some kind of music programme going on, which again, they would interrupt with updates and news of a goal.

The first commentary I remember radio leicester doing, was in the 79/80 season, when they had second half commentary of our game away at Birmingham.

They also had second half commentary from our last game at Orient that season too, when we became champions.

After that I just remember them doing the odd commentary now and again. I think the Brighton away game at Easter, the following season was one.

I really can't remember when they started doing full match commentary on a regular basis though.

Is that really the origin of it? And they just kept it when they started doing full match commentary?

Which station did those 2 great L'pool

Matches in the 60s..

1963 & 1969 which took city to the final.

Great Times listening to the radio, with my Dad.. So different memories compared with easy TV. Intimacy is so different.. I have watched TV games with my kids 15-20 yrs ago, even now..

Just not the same sort of close atmosphere..

Plus even on TV in the 60s,many commentaries could be followed comfortably by blind people.. Knew where the play was

Today too much waffle.. And miss commentating on excellent moves, fouls..

I'm more 80s, went to my first game in '76 but a better memory of little Nev's era on the radio.

One of my favourite memories was being 1-0 down away to Southend with 5 mins to go, the presenter

puts on Come Dancing by the Kinks and the song gets interrupted twice by the goal horn and we win 2-1.

To this day whenever I hear that song I smile and think of that game.

When RL started (Nov 67) the only live commentaries were of Tigers games, with Van Hopkins commentator: possibly from start but soon after. This does age me but I remember speaking to him on air live in studio. [Live commentaries of football was limited - as I recall - to second half on (I think) Radio 2].

Youre absolutely right.

Certainly as far back as the 70s, they had commentary on Tigers games on a saturday, even though the rugby was amateur in status, and all the games were basically friendlies, other than a cup competion.

If for whatever reason there was no Rugby on a Saturday, then they had second half commentary from whichever football game Radio 2 were at.

City reserves would also play at home on a Saturday afternoon at Filbert Street at times, when the first team were playing away.

When i was very little, they were the games i was took too, until it was deemed that i was old enough to go to the first team games.

I think Dennis Coates also of Central had a spell covering us too.

He did indeed, and when we won division 2 in 1980, Dennis Coath and Steve Lambden as i recall, brought out a record, to celebrate the title called "Champions".

I don’t think there was ever just second half coverage of City, Radio Two did that for their match on a Saturday afternoon.
I think it changed from reports/updates to full commentary in the early 90’s.

Can remember as a 9/10 year old we were away v Liverpool Boxing Day - commentator advised listeners to pray for a goal

Que half way through there song goal horn was magical

Remember that, My brother was a liverpool fan and had got a new ghetto blaster for Christmas, after that second goal it got turned off and he stormed upstairs. My mum has to quickly scramble to get her wireless on.

The goal horn certainly was magical. The start it gave you and the rush of excitement you’d get when it suddenly interrupted a song or burst out the radio was fantastic.
