Misquote.

"The love of money is the route of all evil."

Or essentially, greed. So yeah, pretty much. Apart from psychosis.

Yes, and to build on this - the fullest translation is "the root of all kinds of evil" or as Young's Literal Translation puts it: "for a root of all the evils is the love of money". Sounds a bit like Yoda when stated in that way I realise.

The below is the root of all evil, its the bloody serpents fault.

God fashions Adam from dust and places him in the Garden of Eden. Adam is told that he can eat freely of all the trees in the garden, except for the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Subsequently, Eve is created from one of Adam's ribs to be his companion. They are innocent and unembarrassed about their nakedness. However, a serpent convinces Eve to eat fruit from the forbidden tree, and she gives some of the fruit to Adam. These acts not only give them additional knowledge, but also give them the ability to conjure negative and destructive concepts such as shame and evil. God later curses the serpent and the ground. God prophetically tells the woman and the man what will be the consequences of their sin of disobeying him. Then he banishes them from the Garden of Eden.

If you're interested, it's worth checking out Michael Heiser and his work on Eden and the serpent etc. He was a Near eastern languages scholar but his work isn't dry, he gives brilliant insights into the writer's intentions. Check these out:

Yeah, just had a look at a couple more and the newer translations go that way and makes more sense.

Do not think money is not the root of all evil. It is the fact we have made money the very point, the actual end game, our definition of success. This now means that the wealth is never enough for many, it’s aspirational, and there are no guard rails, no legislation protecting the necessary capital to keep floating around the economy.

These few just spend their money buying hotels, supermarkets, your house, car parks, bus firms, medical supplies company, your pension, etc, etc and you pay to use these services, the circle grows, they get richer and we go around again.

There are no political colours here,  Blair continued the selling off of council houses that the Tories started, Clinton unlocked the blocks on banks that lead to the sub prime crisis.

Basically the problem is people, it always is, greedy,  grasping, self serving people. Front line politicians are just bankers who are shit at maths.

John Maynard Keynes had it right, we have a duty to society, every single one of us.

Sorry, will STFU now.

But we can only pay that duty to society if we have money.  Obviously we could live a stone-age subsistence type life without money, but even then, they used to trade to get richer.  People want possessions, it's how we are.

But because there is less money floating around, we will  have less and less money to spend on stuff. We do of course want things, we want use our earnt cash to get things we want or worse, actually need to have. The fact this is money is being siphoned off due to higher rents, higher bills, increase in food prices, and a myriad of other increased costs, money that is increasing their wealth, it’s cyclic in all the wrong way. Not even sure a wealth tax will even touch the sides in our new oligarchy.

Yeah, again, the issue is with money causing power disparity and inequality, not money itself.

Money isn't the problem in of itself, but it does facilitate it and that merits consideration as part of the issue.

Of course, money is the bullets in the gun, so requires considering how it can managed at a societal level.

Given we’re prob all in the richest 0.001% of people that have ever lived, and how us westerners live these days, yes I’d agree it’s the root of all evil. Press a button and a child in China will make whatever plastic junk landfill product you desire, delivered to your door.

The root cause of most evil, I’d say relate to religion, or thirst for power.

Money is a by-product of power.

Having money doesn’t make the world go round, it can however improve the ride. Like @Izzy alluded along the lines of, a lot can be made for the saying “Health before Wealth”.

I mean, old Jeff from Amazon isn’t a war mongering loonie and he seems to be fairly well off. I could see Elon generating the first Terminator though.

I guess, if the world ran on the same currency, same time zones etc, agreed on some worldwide laws for ethical trading standards etc, would we see some of the issues we do now.

Maybe not.

They've all got richer by businesses growing.  If we just shut down their companies, they'd be as poor as the rest of us.  (Well, their ex-employees would be poorer still, but that's another matter.)

It depends on your heart. A kind man would share his last loaf of bread with a starving dog, but an evil man has no problem stepping on the neck of a widow to gain one more penny.

Money isn't the root of all evil, but it sure does bring the worst out of many .

It is no surprise that a lot of the Top ,000001% are mostly deranged sociopaths benefitting from the current economical/banking system. Discard massive amounts of good food, why you ask? So the price of said food doesn't decrease. Affordable health-care and medicine? Nah but what about Lobbying for war so the people connected to the military-industrial complex can benefit whilst you murder innocents and burden your population with even more taxes? A daisy if you do.

Honestly, I would say those people should face trail for high treason and crimes against humanity but sadly money can also control the courts.

Money would turn a weak-willed man blind and an evil man demonic.

Are they "cash rich" or "business rich".

Almost certainly a combination of both, but I doubt if their companies were shut down tomorrow, they'd be strapped for cash and visiting food banks.

Huge wins on lotteries seems to send some people over the edge. I assume it's because they suddenly have this "wealth" that they haven't earned and so don't know how to handle it.

You might remember the Spend Spend pools winner Viv Nicholson I think it was in the 60s which ended in tragedy

Come on, that’s absurd. We’re talking about billionaires here not a self employed middle class person. They have property worth tens of millions with no mortgage regardless of what their pay is. Elon Musk and Jeff Besos would not be “as poor as the rest of us” if you shut down Amazon and Tesla ffs.

Would be barking mad if they had no mtg on the corporate structure that owned said house. Debt is a great tax offset if your wealth is tied up in assets. Best off living off of loans rather than income

Yep, the education system doesn’t teach you how to deal with money. 25% of uk adults have less than £100 to their name. 33% live month to month and couldn’t afford a sudden one off bill like a broken boiler. At that point you’re not living, you’re just existing

No, that's true.  You would have to do more than just destroy their businesses to get them to be poor.  But how vital is it that they should be poor?  Would you give up your job and your home so that Gates and Musk had a little less?

If god created evil, god is evil
