One such moment was when space craft sent back images of the Earth for the first time. Another is the discovery of life on another world, a moment that has inched a little closer today with the news that signs of a gas, which on Earth is produced by simple marine organisms, has been found on a planet called K2-18b. Now, the prospect of really finding alien life - meaning we are not alone in the Universe - is not far away, according to the scientist leading the team that made the detection. "This is basically as big as it gets in terms of fundamental questions, and we may be on the verge of answering that question," says Prof Nikku Madhusudhan of the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge University. But all of this prompts even more questions, including, if they do find life on another world, how will this change us as a species? Fascinating topic of discussion. Whilst I do not at all doubt this to be the case I'm always baffled by how they could possibly detect a gas on a planet we're incapable of reaching. I have the utmost faith in science but I do not understand the science behind it.

Come on over to the sci thread and sometime soon I'll make a post on spectroscopy and how it can identify emitted gases by electromagnetic spectra alone.

Can you come into my workplace and examine the gases emitted by erstwhile LCFC, Cov and Cardiff player Nick Platnauer? I'd say methane, but it smells not-of-this-Earth. I'm really surprised he wasn't faster round the pitch, given his jet propulsion. 1

Only last week the majority here were saying that Adolescence highlighted how ignorant they were But do you know your childs movement 24/7? What if they said going round a mates to work on homework? I agree with what your saying as i have a 12 year old daughter but there is only so much you can control.

Not just the “complacent” ones. So you think parents who try their best, but as you say can’t be sure 24/7 should have their lives ruined with criminal convictions? Because there 14 year old has sex with another 14 year old? If you’re a parent, if you thought your 14 year old was going round their friends house to do homework but then they ended up having sex together, you should have to go through the years long anxiety of being arrested, have your life on hold for a year or two, go to court, likely lose your job, have a criminal record etc. because of that. 3

To be clear I would prefer people not to be prosecuted in law. By using the term criminal I mean that there are a lot of parents not doing anywhere near what could be called their best. Surely it can't be good for society for children having under age sex?

Also will the other child's parent or responsible adult be at the address?

ClaphamFox Posted 18 April 2025 Posted 18 April 2025 (edited) 19 hours ago, The Doctor said: You talk of single sex spaces and yet you don't actually consider the impact they also have on trans people. Like, lets talk sex crimes and in particular let's talk about behaviour within prison wards. Are you aware of the concept of V-Coding? It is a truly abhorrent practice that occurs when trans women are put in male prisons and the prison staff use those trans women to pacify incarcerated men through their institutionalised rape: https://www.repository.law.indiana.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1087&context=ijlse As to the argument around men opting out, this is a fundamental level at which we will never agree. Trans women are not men, not sociologically, not biologically. As far as I am concerned a trans woman who has undergone medical transition is a biological woman (and vice versa with trans men), because medical transition alters your biology (this is the entire point of all medicine - to alter your biology to treat the condition). It does not alter chromosomes but chromosomes are frankly irrelevant - they are the blueprints for the body, not the reality of the body. The endocrinology of the body and the reproductive capabilities of the body are far more important (and the reproductive capabilites are not binary for that matter, we don't define infertile and fertile as different sexes). The counterpoints to that get far closer to arguments for intelligent design that I'll ever give the time of day to. My position is not that there should be no single sex spaces at all, it's that single sex spaces which treat trans men as women and trans women as men fundamentally fail to achieve the point of single sex spaces and instead are the wilful endangerment of trans women, which ultimately endangers all women through increasing harassment of people for slighter and slighter gender non-conformity (case in point, women being harassed for being taller than average: https://www.yahoo.com/news/walmart-fires-64-cisgender-woman-210344920.html) It is not the responsibility of women to solve the problem of male violence. Of course trans women prisoners must be protected from the kind of horrific abuses you describe, but the answer to that is to create places where they are safe - it is not to put them in women’s prisons and put women at risk of being the victims of male violence. There is no evidence that medical transition fundamentally alters the male pattern criminality I describe above, and which I regard as fundamental to this. Medical transition cannot fully reverse the masculinisation of the brain that occurs during foetal development and puberty, and the available evidence we have suggests that post-transition trans women continue to behave like men. Hence why I believe trans women do not belong in female prisons and that other solutions must be found to protect them from V-coding and other forms of abuse. Edited 18 April 2025 by ClaphamFox 2

As for sex it never seriously crossed my mind at 14. Maybe I was just naïve, my sexual education of women was developed a little later on from toilet walls where there was some very defined drawings of women plus a lot of homosexual drawings and messages. Mind you quite conflicting when you've seen this on the toilet wall at junior school Put a penny in the slot To see what Marilyn Monroe's got Two big tits and a hairy cock That's what Marilyn Monroe's got 1
