In other Lincolnshire news, new mayor Andrea Jenkyns wants to sack diversity officers from the council. There is, however, a slight problem with this. They don't exist. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/farage-reform-council-diversity-officers-local-elections-lincolnshire-jenkyns-b2744308.html And then there's this. Looks to me as though LCC is about to make LCFC look well-run. The joys of populism.

Acceleration to the Dickens era. Quite honestly, I think Reform making an absolute balls of local councils is the only way that their voters will learn. It's very easy to point out everything that Labour and the Tories are doing wrong and offer nebulous promises of 'we'll do it better' via vague policy ideals and statements, but actually doing it is a whole different ball game. Thanet Council gave UKIP control a few years ago and it turned into a complete bin fire. The council is now Labour-held and their two MPs are Labour and Conservative with Reform coming a pretty distant third in both seats.

I disagree, I think they’ll just blame central government and people will lap it up. Council funding is terrible as it is and these areas will need higher amounts of social care funding due to age. 1

The unpleasant stuff first - Lincolnshire has lots of small towns with a mix of the elderly, poorly educated and low income people who felt completely let down by a Tory government that promised much and delivered very little and, frankly, won't touch Labour because The Sun, The Daily Mail and their social media feeds tell them not to. With the Tories a letdown and Labour not even considered, it doesn't take much for a right-wing populist party to come in and say that 'your towns are on their arse because of immigration and the main two parties' and be believed. Often enthusiastically. They do have a bit of a point, though. Boston, Skegness, Gainsborough, Grimsby, Cleethorpes and Scunthorpe have all been in decline for years. And it's easy for a bad faith party to tie this to immigration because some of them have gotten worse since the expansion of the EU and the European migration crisis, with the very visible effects of migrants in Skegness hotels and growing EU migrant communities in places like Boston providing an easy scapegoat. The reality is obviously far more nuanced and involves brain drain, North-South divide, globalisation and a decade-and-a-half of underinvestment outside London, but these don't hit as hard as 'immigrants done it' to a population with relatively low information living at the sharp end of a failed system. They see towns that were once bustling with independent, locally-owned craft shops replaced by empty units, charity shops, bookies and Polish supermarkets. They see once attractive seafront hotels that had families all summer becoming tired, dilapidated and filled with Albanians and Eritreans who, because of years of government failure on border control and migration policy, mill around all day with little to do except hope they won't get deported. It really doesn't take much effort for a rabble of shysters to blame it all on foreigners, but the reality is governments failure in terms of protecting the high street, failing to maintain border agreements post-Brexit, the previous government being obsessed with performative cruelty over pragmatic solutions and the current government offering little in the way of hope and inspiration that things will get better. At that point, all Reform need do is offer the moon on a stick. By the time people realise they've been sold a pup, as with Brexit, it's too late. Damage done. The only positive is that we can get rid of Reform in Lincolnshire after four years once they have inevitably made a complete mess and hope that the same people realise that they aren't the answer at national level either. But the government needs to learn and fast, because the alternative is much, much worse.

Not so sure they'll be interested in the nuances of the relationship between central government and the council, honestly. If they see potholes going unfixed, council taxes going up and bin collections going belly up, they'll blame the council. This is a long one, but see this video of Skegness residents going mad at the PARISH COUNCIL over immigration and hotel use. Scratch that, give you a more edited one as well. How that didn't turn into a riot is beyond me. Edited 4 May 2025 by Bilo

Concocted, no. Whipped up, yes. Hence their silence when the grooming gangs have surnames like Smith instead of Khan.

This man is an affront to politics and that's saying something. He is obnoxious, arrogant, borderline racist. Pretty much Reform's equivalent of Maga's Vance. If you want to know what Reform will look like if they get a majority in Parliament, unlikely as that might be, he is it. Nasty. Edited 4 May 2025 by Parafox 3

How that didn't turn into a riot is beyond me. I think a lot of the reason people are so angry is because they keep getting told that what they see with their eyes is not really happening, and that they are elderly, poorly educated and low income people like that means they don't count and their concerns do not deserve to be addressed by their politicians. As you say it is then really easy for people who appear to be listening to get their vote. Which then the mainstream politicans use to belittle them further - often implying they are racist too - instead of actually looking at the issues. 1
