I find Ukraine usually serve up something interesting or different to the norm. Latvia was a solid piece this year. I'm a sucker for good vocal harmonies.

The jury points for Latvia and for Denmark were pretty random - not saying that is the case for some juries, but geographical proximity often also means cultural proximity, so it's more natural for neighbours to appreciate eachothers songs.

With the caveat that the UK has done shit my whole adult life, whatever the voting system, the very idea of the 20 votes thing sucks.

 

[Edit, and the additional caveat that weird shit stuff has won previously, too]

 

If anyone can explain to me the rationale for 20 votes per caller existing, in terms other than more money for the organisers, fire away, I'm all ears.

Because of large diaspora I imagine. And maybe playing last meant they were freshest in the memory? No idea.

Azerbaijan have a long history of dodgy voting patterns. Their jury was actually disqualified in 2022 after ringleading it with five other countries, but it's believed it had been going on for years at that point, if not since the day they first entered.

There are pretty credible accusations that they bought their one and only win in the contest by fiddling the votes. Factor in Armenia being their answer to Palestine, and it checks out that they'd be easy for the Israelis to buy the vote of.

I didn’t know about this, why doesn’t it get media attention? 
 

I mean I knew about Christians in Syria, Iraq etc and the history of the Ottoman Empire but not this, now.

There is little interest in this region in GB I guess. Our foreign secretary complimented Azerbaijan on "liberating" territory they have ethnically cleansed of Armenians.
