Mark Posted 25 December 2005 Posted 25 December 2005 My two main presents were a Samsung D500 and a Boss Guitar Tuner.
Thracian Posted 25 December 2005 Posted 25 December 2005 My sister bought me a presentation album displaying our full family ancestry on my father's side dating back to the year 1800. Apparently it took months and months to compile. Stunning. My wife bought tickets for An Evening with Jimmy Greaves at Bedworth Civic Hall, especially kind cos she's not even a football fan. The extraordinarily kind words on her Christmas card would have sufficed for me had I not got any other presents. My oldest son treated the whole family to Christmas dinner at the Marina in Hinckley - a super canalside pub with pleasant food, childrens play area, a warm and friendly atmosphere for even the smallest children and thoroughly pleasant, enthusiastic and helpful staff. We even played tiddlywinks with the nippers on the restaurant floor and no-one batted an eyelid!. We only booked two days before, the place was crammed solid with bookings but the manager pulled out every stop to find a space for us all...and what a lovely time was had by all. It's really been a lovely Christmas.

MC Prussian Posted 25 December 2005 Posted 25 December 2005 My Christmas was on a much smaller scale in terms of presents. Just being back home for three weeks and having the opportunity to hook up with friends and family is priceless. My parents (say: my mother) bought me a two-way ticket. Outstanding gesture. I actually told them not to buy me any other stuff, as I felt kinda embarrassed and pleased enough. Christmas is always a weird experience, because we give people items they don't necessarily need. - Still got some cash from my stepfather & my grandma (bless her) - A scarf - And a bottle of Ferrari perfume Nevertheless, I hope you're all still having a great Christmas time...
Thracian Posted 25 December 2005 Posted 25 December 2005 what an amazing thing to do, ive been thinking of finishing our families my dad started it years ago not sure how far with it however. anyone famous in the family? I've barely started reading through but we had a Mayor of Sheffield way back and some reasonably talented sportsmen, (including boxers and cricketers) but most of the menfolk were boatmen and brewery workers which perhaps explains my partiality to real ale and my treasured time in the Swan and Rushes before home matches. It was amazing how, before 1870, so many people were illiterate and had to make a mark rather than signing their name.

The People's Hero Posted 26 December 2005 Posted 26 December 2005 In terms of receiving presents, I haven't received a huge amount this year. I have been given some thoughtful gifts though and take joy in the enjoyment that people have gained from some of the thoughtful gifts I have given. Best of all is that 2006 starts soon and I'll be pleased to see the back of this year. Merry Christmas one and all.

It was amazing how, before 1870, so many people were illiterate and had to make a mark rather than signing their name. I've been doing a lot of research in to my own family in recent years and have found a book which has been written on my family. A cracking read and I can trace a firm line back to 1540. It's a nice thing to do... everyone's family is bound to throw up a couple of interesting things! I recommend it.

How far back did you have to go to find anyone worth of note? My grandma traced our family back to the Crusades (12th century)... and this was BEFORE the internet
