If There's One Skill You Wish You Had...

I’m very envious of anyone who can pick up a cricket bat or a tennis racket and just start clonking balls away with great if not perfect timing from ball or point 1. I like cricket but my batting relies on strong defence and concentration so I must be excruciating to watch. I’d love to be one of those people who can just knock off a century in 25 overs then retire to let someone else have a go.

Not really a skill but I’d love the ability to do and understand practice science - like physics or biology experiments for example. Be able to see and properly understand molecules or cells and understand what we actually are.

For more practical things I wish I could properly build structures with my hands like carpentry or bricklaying while also understanding the engineering/architecture behind it. Would love to have said I built my own shed or something bigger.

You could absolutely build your own shed or something similar with a few YouTube videos and bits of reading.

You could argue something similar with many of these things but that is definitely quite an accessible skill.

I have no musical ability at all but I’m completely fine with that.

Salesmanship is immensely valuable, I can talk to people but I don’t have the killer knack for it. It’s the by far the best soft skill

More personally I’d prefer to have been an much better footballer, I can hold my own but for such a preoccupation - I’m not great

My dad made me go for accordion lessons when I was about 12. I have no idea why.

I found it the most difficult instrument to learn.

I still have the accordion in the loft.

My Mum made me go for piano lessons when I was about 9. Because she wished she'd learned to play an instrument as a child.

I had to play classical music with a blue-rinse Tory lady teacher who made me stand in the corner and sing notes and who would slap my hands if I played a bum note.

It put me off playing an instrument for life.....until now......I might make a bid for your accordion. ;)

I think if you've got good co-ordination and still be able to separate the left from right it's not too difficult.

I learnt play the drums and that required all 4 limbs doing different things at the same time. It took a while and I'm no way accomplished but I can pick up a rhythm pretty quickly whilst listening to a song where I can fill in the drum track.

I'd love to be able to play the drums, the 4 limbs doing different things always just seemed like witchcraft though

I bought my son and keyboard and a subscription for Simply Piano for his birthday so he could learn it. I've been dabbling myself and the apps are really good for learning the basics. I'm absolute sh*te at anything creative artistic and creative and have been making solid progress.

Most of the things posted here are achievable, give it a go!

There are certain times in my life when I lost my bottle. Anna D, a couple of interviews, and a very good but demanding job. For quite some time I blamed/hated myself for losing the plot, and I'm sure it impacted on my health for many years. I just wish I'd been more resilient at those times. As for learning a language or other skills, I've found out all it takes is time and discipline. Having said that, it does get harder as you get older.

Wish i could be a good artist, the idea of drawing, creating art, appeals to me, but I'm terrible at it.  Some of the artists you see who can paint pictures that look like photographs...its incredible, I'd love to have that skill.

I wish I took the time when I was younger to become multi-lingual.

I already did German at GCSE but not really enough to get me by and I've forgotten most of it now.

I'd like to be able to speak Mandarin and Spanish.
