I'd say that is a questionable take but even if there was an element of truth in it, he has the potential to be much much better than them both and managers will sometimes place the development of a major talent on the job to evoke the improvement more quickly.

Anyway he proved last season he is very good at this level whilst both Vestergaard and Faes proved they are not up to the PL so why risk failing to cultivate a future England international for the sake of these pair?

Disappointing from Marti on our academy players so far but i'm not surprised. Cowardice.

There’s no pressure on him to play him that’s the problem. Even most of our fans prefer Faes and Vestergaard. Bizarre!

I agree about the future side. Maybe we can get promoted with these two playing but we will be straight back down unless we sign two new centre backs!

Nelson isn't anywhere near as good as Faes or Vestergaard and Carranza is an unknown quantity so not sure how you can say this?

Nelson is comfortably good enough, we saw that when we were last down here, and Carranza cannot be any worse than Ayew.

Or he Faes is just better at this time?
Sure Nelson could become prime Maldini, but he isn’t now and starting him in this game or putting on the bench won’t change that either way.

This game will be fraught, so I see no issue with those starting.

Concerns around Nelson are not groundless, but this isn’t the first time he has been overlooked by a manager,

Rudoni is the only player in their starting XI I really rate - anybody else there to keep an eye on?

Mason-Clark is a massive miss for us but the midfield partnership of Rudoni and Torp will cause you problems. Torp has scored 4 goals so far.

But is he better is the question. In this derby you want the best we have, and if Nelson is, then Marti got it wrong, but jury is out.

kinda is though? he was Enzo's backup which is absolutely fine for a lad making his first breakthrough season. Probably wasn't good enough to go straight into the prem so went out on loan under Cooper, was never available for RvN as a result

Nelson should be starting. We need to look to the future, I'd much rather watch Nelson make mistakes than Faes.

Easy to say but reality is look at Luke Thomas etc etc if Nelson was making mistakes then people would be getting on his back. I would like to see him in the squad and possibly in the side, but sometimes it’s about partnerships and whilst Nelson has a far higher ceiling I still think at this stage Vesty, Faes and even Okoli are better all round options, however over the next 9-12 months hopefully Ben will push on, I actually think he is seen as the alternative to Vestergard.

we didn't seem any worse for wear two years ago whenever Nelson filled in for Vestegaard, and Vestegaard being slower than glacial drift is a major weakness for us

You could easily suggest he would be bench ready for the Prem if he did fine at Championship level, but I can see what you are saying.

Vestergaard has always been a trade off player, his pace may have gotten worse, but slower than slow is just slow. His strengths lie elsewhere not in a flat sprint, and not at heading, or ….

I didn’t comment on who is better now. I said they are fine for now but aren’t good enough for the Premier League and neither will Nelson now (with us). My issue is us tossing away such a prospect in the interests of such short termism.

I share the concern, he seems quite good enough for us at this level, and has a future. Not sure what the story is with Nelson, and I know people rave him, but what does any manager gain by ignoring him? Maybe it’s time to default to supporting the manager for a change rather than looking for certain players to start because reasosn.

Faes is our best defender, regardless of the opinions of him.

And that is one of the main reasons we are back in this division.

The way Sky are banging on about Coventry you’d think they were a cross between the Ajax side of the early seventies and Brazil

Good

I want us to go fully under the radar this season, just quietly go about our business and let everybody else spaff over the likes of Ipswich and Cov

The fact that Coady has far more minutes for us than Nelson despite Coady being shocking at this level with Wrexham whilst Nelson looked comfortable with Oxford says all you need to know about the judgement of managers, dont put too much weight in to it.

If he isn’t good enough now, he’s never going to make it for us. And if that’s the case fine, but he needs to be sold in January to at least earn some profit and move on.
