Oxford’s approach to their transfer embargo has been to retain a good proportion of their first team squad, as confirmed on the ‘When You’re Smiling’ pre Oxford podcast by the Oxford Utd BBC correspondent. They released or sold 7 first team squad members between the end of last season and the end this transfer window and returned 3 loans which were replaced by 3 this season. They’ve kept a good core of experienced Championship players.

Given where we are right now we’d have been better off keeping Dean Smith after relegation. We might not have gone up under Enzo, but it’s not as if that money helped us, we blew the lot. We’d likely be forming a championship challenging team right now, the football wouldn’t have been great, but it hasn’t been great for about 6 years anyway. 3
