James_lcfc Posted 2 September Posted 2 September 'Huge' offer from United and we turned it down? Aren't we desperate for the cash? Weird one. Also standing in the way of a promising youngster's opportunity to get out of the shit-show seems a bit harsh. He can't be overly pleased! Maybe he's been guaranteed game time here, but if he went to United he would have be loaned out and played at Championship/League 1 level anyway... I'm glad he's stayed as I'm just a fan and I really enjoy watching him play, just seems a bit strange to me.

Even if Man Utd offered £15m (which they probably didn't), why would we take that when Page could make a massive difference to our promotion prospects this season and his future potential value is so much higher? It would have been weird if we'd have sold him for the price they offered. 2
Popular Post jstclair1 Posted 2 September Popular Post Posted 2 September This is the best bit of business this window, get promoted and he's already a 30m player. 9
RowlattsFox Posted 2 September Posted 2 September I hope Page understands and backs himself to progress his career because it must be hard to know Man Utd have come in for you and it not happen. But he seems to have a good attitude and mind-set.
Grebfromgrebland Posted 2 September Posted 2 September Based on his trajectory so far this boy can get to the very top. Looks like the negotiations are reflecting this.

I think those involved are simply enjoying the story. £8m or so, with additional add-ons, is a big offer for an 18 year old. As Louis was playing, I strongly doubt this came close yesterday. But the story of the big 4 getting round a table and giving Man U the middle finger sure does sound good. 2

Obviously nothing is guaranteed such as avoiding injuries etc. But you’d think there’d be something. From the clubs point of view, they likely see an opportunity to get more for him down the line which is fair enough. Also a risk we take if he didn’t kick on or got injuries etc. 1

Yeah good point - Guess I just don't see us having any 'promotion prospects' this season with or without Page, so didn't consider that. Still, a good season for him should see his value go up, you're right. I wonder if he was pushing for the move or if he's happy to stay for now...not a big fan of keeping players who aren't motivated and would rather be somewhere else!

We have the best squad in the division—we should be aiming for the title, let alone promotion. Page didn't play last night as if he wasn't motivated. And neither did Souttar, despite predictions that he would sulk if he didn't get a move. 1
les-tah Posted 2 September Posted 2 September Winning the league doubles his value, and even then he wont be a premier league player so cant see him leaving in the summer with the chance at playing week in week out in the championship. If he gets us in that top 6 next year he is easily £30 million pound man or more. 1

Maybe we 'should be', but we'll be closer to the bottom than the top if Martin stays. Yeah he looked sharp and hungry last night to be fair - The Jury is still out a bit on Souttar though!

I'm a longstanding Russell Martin sceptic, but I believe he will get us promoted this season, probably as winners. His main weakness is his rigid obsession with one style of play, but even he is likely to make that style work if he happens to have the best squad in the division, which he does. So I think he'll take us up this year and, if he's supported in the transfer market, he might even take us back to the PL eventually. The problems will arise when he tries to play his style against significantly superior opponents, as Southampton found to their cost. But let's cross that bridge if/when we come to it, shall we? Why is the jury still out on Souttar? He's been excellent for the past two games. Edited 2 September by ClaphamFox 1

It would have been weird if we'd have sold him for the price they offered. According to the ‘stories’ we asked for 12+3 so they couldn’t have offered 15m. I’m very confident in saying that the kid ends up there next season or the one after. Just think yanited tried their luck yesterday to see how desperate we were for cash. They run the risk that the club would be pissed at such a late approach but if page had gone then presumably skipp would have stayed. So it’s not like we had to replace him. (Lundstrum was already on the way in to cover an outgoing). If we get promoted then they’ll have to pay 20m+ for him. If we don’t then they’ll get him for less than they offered yesterday. . 1

I’ve been super critical of the club and players but regardless of the level, players enjoy winning matches. If we play as we should and start picking up points, we might actually end up being a club where players want to be. 1

"The problems will arise when he tries to play his style against significantly superior opponents" - Is this a joke? The problems have arisen already...against this opposition! Did you not watch the game last night? . Souttar hasn't been excellent either - 'OK' at best over the last two games and absolutely terrible in the first two.

You can play that way against League One opposition because the standard of opposition means you're far less likely to be punished when you give the ball away near your own box. It's when you play against teams with better quality strikers that the problems will arise, but that's not something we need to worry about this season. Souttar joined pre-season late because of the WC and was behind in his preparation. He was poor in his first few games but has clearly improved as he's gained match fitness and had more time learning Martin's system. He'll be a major asset this season. 1
FosseSpark Posted 2 September Posted 2 September Page and Braybrooke were far and away the best passers of the ball on the field last night. with Joseph, Mcfarlane and Alves not far behind in how well they used the ball. All were way superior to how Plymouth players showed up. So there's room for optimism. Particularly as we've just added a bit of steel to the spine of the team in Ohora, Kangasniemi, Lundstram and Riis. 1

I don't agree that we won't need to worry about it this season though - We'll be punished plenty of times if we play like last night. Like I said though, we'll soon see. You can come back into this thread with a big 'I told you so' when we're top in April Wasn't writing Souttar off either, I do just think the jury is still out on him. He has improved over the last two games, but he was so poor in the first two that it's not really saying much is it?

It would have been weird if we'd have sold him for the price they offered. 100% conjecture. But I think from the money that we’ve banked, and the wages saved from the outgoings, we’ve given ourselves enough headroom to operate this season. It satisfies Macquarie, and it satisfies any further payments on old transfers (Skipp etc) Operating costs are high but were seemingly adhering to the Salary Cost Model thing. So there’s no real necessity to cash in on Page. Yet Next season will be a different story, and no doubt we’ll all be frustrated seeing the academy jewels sold in the next 12 months, but in the here and now Page is a difference maker. It’s no surprise that the 3 better performances have come with him in the deep laying playmaker role, opposed to Skipp in the first 3 games where we were honking. If Page keeps playing how he’s been playing they’ll be teams queuing up for him next season and we can potentially demand a higher fee The other side is having a potential £10m asset in the ranks inflates the value for any prospective buyer. If Top’s looking for a sale and can point to a player that is wanted by Man U it’s an important and attractive selling point. If your academy is producing a stream of Monga’s and Page’s then Seagrave isn’t the massive millstone round our neck that some folk make it out to be 1
