Ecuador rested 5 players so they will play alot better than they did today. and if anyone can explain why walcott is there then please tell me??!! so far he is just being a wasted spot on the team

Beckham and Carragher were an absolute shambles. That team is crying out for some genuine width.

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Unfortunately Beckham was fukcing invisible for the entire game :mad:

i know i dont like gary neville that much but he would give us alot more width then carragher. but this is what happens when the stupid manager only takes one proper right back

I do rate Gary as an attacking full back - but he's always injured in tourno's - it's a joke!:angry:

Wasn't his fault. We played entirely down the left and just lumped it to Crouch, players like Rooney and Beckham never stood a chance.

fantastic goal! it hit the post just after i finished thinking 'what have you hit that for??!'

Yes indeed, what on earth possessed him to hit a ball that set up perfectly for him :whistle:lol:P

I've come to a conclusion .. Sven is a w*nker!

Dont accept that at all - he NEVER looked for it, he never played a good ball - he was playing at less than half speed. It was not a decent England performance ... and certainly NOT a captains performance.

Tonight, he was a disgrace

Just when I thought our defence was the key to us doing well at this world cup :(

Disgrace is too strong, way too strong. Agreed he was below par but that was mainly not his fault.

Again - do not agree.

I think, as a captain, his performance was disgraceful. He didn't run, pass or shoot. He was a liability that made his position redundant.

I would like to see him dropped if this is how motivated he is for the World Cup!

Beckham was abysmal I thought. The first goal was completely his fault, they almost scored a second in identical circumstances (from the opposite side) which would have been his fault, and his constant long ball kept giving the ball away.

His set pieces were awful today too. He doesn't maintain any sort of width and on tonight's performance was a liability.

Beckham wasn't at his best today but still did play some good balls.. and not just his cross field balls either, played some beauties through to Rooney in the first half. Unfortunately, the players (under Sven's instruction or not) played exclusively down the left in the second half, hence Beckham not really being involved.

He did admittedly have a part in the poor defending from set pieces though.

Disgrace is too strong. Frustrating probably better.

Not impressed tactically or collectively.

England seem to have as many Chosen Men as Leicester.

Only Joe Cole, Peter Crouch, Paul Gerrard and Owen Hargreaves, to a lesser extent, emerged from that shambles with any credit (sorry Martyn, just read your similar comment).

And we won the group!. Which will encourage even more of the same predictable and uninspiring rubbish.

Not even in the squad mate :P

The main thing is we won the group, the most worrying things is our shit defending at set pieces.

He is a captain - and that commands a performance to lead the team.

His was disgraceful, woeful and pathetic.

What about the fact that we have less available forwards by the game and that the ones we do have are hardly looking sharp and hungry!

To be honest it was only set pieces where the panic set in, Sweden never looked like creating anything in open play. Still it was a poor 2nd half and only Joe Cole and Owen Hargreaves can come out with much credit.

Yep, I agree.

I can't remember too many occasions where they threatened from any open play situations. I thought we controlled the first half and played some good football. We seemed to struggle to retain the ball in the second half, which was a mixture of a lack of movement and willingness to take ownership from our players, and Sweden employing a more pressing game.

For both of Sweden's goals, it was just down to extremely poor defending. Beckham was taking up a near post position to defend corners, and I don't particularly blame him as he's zonally marking that position. Another player should have tracked Allback, given that he's one of the main threats. Granted, it was a good delivery, but you can't use that as an excuse.

The second one was just a catologue of errors. Campbell seemed to be in no mans land as he failed to anticipate the flight of the ball - he had both Mellberg and Larsson behind him, with just Ashely Cole covering.

And inbetween that, we generally struggled from set pieces. We just looked very unprepared and they seemed to be a lack of communication.

The 4-5-1 we employed when Rooney went off seemed to make sense in theory, but we didn't fulfill it in the right way. You had Hargreaves holding, with the aim of Lampard and Gerrand pushing forward, but Cole and Beckham needed to play more in advance of the wide positions and attempt to support Crouch. He was left isolated, which gave Sweden the initiative to take posession of the ball. Against a better side, who will be more incisive than Sweden from open play, we'll get overpowered in all areas of the pitch playing like that.

Now for some positives...

I thought Hargreaves played very well. I will admit I've not been his biggest fan, but he was played in his supposedly best position tonight. It's not a glamorous job, however, he did all the crucial tasks of breaking up play in front of the back 4, and keeping the ball ticking over. Apart from one almost suicidal pass in the first half where he gave it away, and a few rash/impatient tackles, he kept going and was one of the better players, along with Joe Cole.

It's just frustrating that we can play well in one half, and then produce a completely different performance in the second. We should get away with it against Ecuador, and if we do, we'll struggle to get past the Quarter Finals.

Thanks. Corrected now. Shows how pissed off I was with our performance.

Spot on.

Sven constantly employs shapes/tactics which encourage England to sacrifice the initiative and possession of the ball.

We're a better side with the ball than without it (sounds obvious) but really, we're not good enough to constantly give the ball away and get away with it, especially going in to the final stages.
