martyn Posted 20 June 2006 Posted 20 June 2006 If we go 4-5-1, Lennon HAS to play but Sven won't have the balls to drop Beckham or Lampard (who I would sacrifice). - ----------------------------------Robinson-------------------------- Carragher/G Neville-----Ferdinand-------Terry----------A.Cole- -----------------------Beckham--------Hargreaves---------------- -Lennon-------------------------Gerrard-----------------------J.Cole- ---------------------------------Rooney--------------------------------

I think Lampard has been the most ineffective of the midfielders. In Hargreaves position, I'd playing either him or Carrick. Think now Hargreaves has had a game though and played all 90 minutes, I'd keep him in. And Crouch out (as per the above team).
Daggers Posted 20 June 2006 Posted 20 June 2006 not forgetting the fact that we may not see Rio again?
Ultra Posted 20 June 2006 Posted 20 June 2006 Not a bad selection but I cannot see why you have left Crouch out! Possibly because, as he proved again tonight, he simply isn't mobile enough to play as a front man in a 4-5-1. Mellberg, who is no more than an average Premiership player, dealt with him easily.
The People's Hero Posted 20 June 2006 Posted 20 June 2006 In which case Carragher to centre back, Neville in at right back (if fit). Otherwise.. it'll have to be Sol, I spose.
Scow Posted 20 June 2006 Posted 20 June 2006 not forgetting the fact that we may not see Rio again? It's worrying. Campbell looks far from his best, and the Ferdinand/Terry gives us a solid foundation, even if we're not playing well.
Mark Posted 20 June 2006 Posted 20 June 2006 Beckham wasn't at his best today but still did play some good balls.. and not just his cross field balls either, played some beauties through to Rooney in the first half. Unfortunately, the players (under Sven's instruction or not) played exclusively down the left in the second half, hence Beckham not really being involved. We do try to play down the right side but Carragher has a difficulty in passing forwards, so it goes backwards and we move over to the left. When Beckham has the ball, unless he picks out the odd amazing pass, he often plays the cross field pass, where we're more dangerous. We've two right sided players who hardly move forwards, it's too static. Lennon IN, Beckham OUT.
Deathside Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 So I only got to see the last 20 mins - due to being at a work function What can I say I loved it - I told everyone before the game that it would be Hendrik's night Even though I'm in Scotland I was much surprised by the hostility I got for A) Not giving flying fúck t a rolling doughnut about englnd B) Supporting Sweden - Actually a lot of said hostility was from work colleagues - I hate the way international football effects / changes people SWEDEN BELONGS TO ME PS: I do concede that Joke Hole looked good for england

I would prefer to see Lennon playing instead of Beckham but it won't and shouldn't happen in this World Cup. Beckham is our captain and a massive figure in the camp, dropping him would cause more problems. Besides Beckhams deliveries from set pieces are always going to cause problems.
Tevez Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 to be honest im not looking forward to watching the ecuador match i think everyone will take the game lightly but they will be tricky
Thracian Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 I don't know that they'll mean to take them lightly but you are right about them being tricky and all the talk of avoiding Germany for the implicitly easier option of Eduador is psychologically counter productive. More sensibly we should have taken the line that "all mtches are difficult" and we'll deal as best we can with whoever comes next.

They are well-organised, possibly are used to the hot climate (??) and quick on the counter-attack. It will be anything but easy and anyone who saw their first two games in the tournament will know that.
shen Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 They had a great and a dreadful half each. Some of the comments about England on here I feel have been very harsh. Joe Cole's performance was world class and they won almost every physical challenge against the Swedish players. What impressed me was the mental attitude of both teams. England could've just played for a draw but went for all 3 points, while the Swedes just never gave up. Overall, England can be quite satisfied, especially with Hargreaves' performance, who did a very good job in that problem midfield role. They should have no problems disposing of Ecuador.
Master Fox Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 I celebrated the Sweden goal i must confess. But my reason for doing so was becuase it made me some money. I got right old ear bashing down the boozer! England did ok last night, I thought it was a bit like watching Leicester play . Best game so far that England has been involved in.
Monk Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 England did ok last night, I thought it was a bit like watching Leicester play . My thoughts exactly - especially in the second half when no one wanted the ball.
