davieG Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 From OS Foxes Capture Cort Posted on: Fri 08 Jun 2007Leicester City have today (Friday) completed a major transfer coup in securing the signing of former Newcastle United and Wolves striker Carl Cort. Cort, who moved to St James' Park from Wimbledon in a deal worth £7 million in 2000, joins the Foxes on a two-year contract. The 29-year-old becomes manager Martin Allen's fourth signing of the week - following the capture of former AC Milan and Bolton defender Bruno N'Gotty, highly rated Danish goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen and young striker Ricky Sappleton. And Allen confirmed that he had beaten off competition from a number of clubs to secure his most recent acquisition's signature. Allen said: "Carl has quality and I am delighted he has chosen us over four other clubs, including one from the Premiership. "I believe I am going to get the best out of him. I am going to work him hard and push him to maximise his ability. Then the ball is in his court." Chairman Milan Mandaric said he was equally pleased with the capture. He added: "I am delighted that we have attracted a player of Carl's calibre to the club. "He met the sole criteria of what this club is all about." Cort arrives at the Walkers Stadium on a free transfer, having been released by Wolves at the end of last season. The striker began his career at Wimbledon as a teenager, and got his first taste of league football through a loan spell with Lincoln City. After a successful period at Sincil Bank, he made his debut for the Dons in their 2-0 Premiership home defeat to Aston Villa at the back end of the 1996-97 campaign, before making his real breakthrough to the first team the following season. Cort ended the 1997-98 season with five goals to his name from 29 appearances. All in all the Southwark-born striker would make 54 league starts in a Wimbledon shirt, scoring on 16 occasions. A £7 million move to Newcastle followed, with Cort scoring on his home debut against Derby County. But a frustrating run of injuries restricted the player to 22 starts during his time at St James' Park. After four years on Tyneside, Cort moved to Wolves for £2 million in January 2004, and went on to score 31 goals from 94 appearances during his three-year spell with the Molineux club.

Ric Flair Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 Got a good feeling about this one. For the life of me I don't know why, but i'm not pissed off by this signing at all. If he stays fit then he'll score goals, it's as simple as that. He always has scored goals when fit. Big ask to get him fit though, but Allen seems to think he can do. Leon Best will be announced next.
Ric Flair Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 how come you deleted mine when i cleary posted before you Yours was in the wrong section as once a transfer is confirmed it is posted in this section me ode.

Tevez Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 We can sign better tbh! But lets give him a chance, we've gave everyone else one.
Babylon Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 Got a good feeling about this one. Ditto. Not sure about the major transfer coup though!!!
Babylon Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 We can sign better tbh! But lets give him a chance, we've gave everyone else one. Difficult to say that considering we don't know the budget!!
mancunianfox Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 I'll give him a chance but I am really not happy about this signing.
holly Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 Not utterly convinced by this. @least we didnt buy him off anyone. Hope he does well 4 us though
davieG Posted 8 June 2007 Author Posted 8 June 2007 how come you deleted mine when i cleary posted before you I didn't delete it I closed it and explained why, why don't you go and and read it before complaining?
northern fox Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 i will accept that i am only a boot cleaner and know my place in life on the Carl Cort issue belive if he stays injury free may become a LCFC legend
teblin Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 Good player, if we can get/keep him fit. We need a target man
City Fan Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 Mixed feeling about this. He could be great and become an absolute legend or could also quite easily flop and be the next Nathan Blake! However, I have faith in MA and MM to get the best out of Cort. Also not going to write him off just yet, lets just see what he can do. Looks like RN FOX on TB was right with this one, except he said about it on Wednesday, wonder why its taken so long to be announced. Wonder whether Jonathan Hayes will be announced today as well? I'm starting to believe that MA is dragging it all out so we have one thing announced each day, i.e. yesterday was RD and MdV being put on the tranny list.
Manwell Pablo Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 We wont keep him fit, no one can keep Carl Cort fit.
Gené and Tonic Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 I suppose he's better than Hammond/De Vries/Horsefield I'd still want us to sign at least 2 more strikers, so I guess Cort gives us another dimension
THEBIGJOHNSTEADER; Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 Good player, if we can get/keep him fit.We need a target man That bloody blank advertisement on the OS is pissing me off, it makes me nearly not read all the article!!
The People's Hero Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 Martin might get him playing. Quite pleased with this actually. I tell you what, he's been awful the last couple of years, but hopefully as I say, Martin can get him playing because he does have ability.
Phlashman Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 ohhh he is a big boy isn't he! I still bet Hume can jump higher!
Ric Flair Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 The reason I have a good feeling about this, is that every time we've had a good manager and done well there have been certain players that we gave a chance when they were down and out and they did the business. Little did it, O'Neill did it and the season of success under Adams was heavily down to cast off's such as Paul Dickov and Billy McKinlay. Ok, so this might mean fook all. We might have a crap season and the blame will be on the players that have been signed. But I don't think we've got as much money as some of you lot think we have and therefore Mandaric has told Allen to do what he does best. Piece together a team that will fight for you and over achieve and get us within striking distance of a crack at promotion. It's a big ask to get Cort to play 30+ games a season but it's not impossible and if he does then I think we'll get double figures in terms of goals out of him. If he can be the Brian Deane of 2002/03 then we'll have struck gold. I still think we'll bring 1 or 2 more strikers in, but at least we've got that target man we needed. I'm fairly pleased, he's on a free. What can we lose?
Lillehamring Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 not the best, i guess - but a free transfer's a free transfer - hopefully, it'll cancel out someone like MDV or hammonds wages, leaving transfer funds for a real quality PURCHASE (hopefully a great midfielder)... god damn, this is fun tho' - when did this ever happen in football, ever - a signing almost every day of the week!
Ric Flair Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 Martin might get him playing.Quite pleased with this actually. I tell you what, he's been awful the last couple of years, but hopefully as I say, Martin can get him playing because he does have ability. It's only this season he's been crap. His previous 2 seasons at Wolves although were blighted by injuries at times, still resulted in him getting in to double figures goals wise. On a side note, does anyone know exactly what sort of injuries Cort suffers regularly from?
teblin Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 Did he bnot nearly come to us before but went to newcastle instead?
