An all-round midfielder...

Recommended Posts

Hellings is an all-round midfielder

So, are we talking someone who can go out wide unlike Hughes, go forward unlike Jarret, go back unlike Johnson, cross the ball unlike Porter and score unlike Williams?

Or are we just talking about shape and that he loves pies as much as Fryatt? :dunno:

Someone who can defend and attack with equal success? It's normally a load of rubbish. Players who can say and are touted to play in a variety are usually shit, Sylla said he could literally play in every position but look how he turned out.

He could play in every position, and was equally shit in every one.

The sooner we shun these Jack of All Trades footballers and start getting some real specialists the better. As we've seen these last few years, the "Jacks" are masters of nothing and all we've ended up with as a result of signing them is a miserably diluted excuse for a football team.

We need to be much more analytical of what players actually do than we seem to be at present. For instance how could anyone have properly evaluated our recent succession of wingers who neither scored nor made goals?.

Can you not be a quality player in a specific position, but able to fill in another if needed?

Yes, but players like that are in short supply and are playing at the top level, Micheal Essien for example. I agree with Thrac in that we should avoid this type of player that does not have a definitive specialised position. To be honest, it is still in debate about whether this Sergio guy is actually a defender or a midfielder.

Absolutely, heaven forbide that we end up with one of those players that sits out wide, defends deep or surges forward like Gerrard. :P

You're in dreamland if you expect us to find a Gerrard to play in Championship football.

The best midfielder I saw at Leicester was Davie Gibson.

He created goals. That was his job. He might have helped out here and there but essentially he provided passes that caused havoc among even the most organised of defences.

And he practised the skills to do that job relentlessly. What he could do with a ball was spellbinding. An entertainment in its own right. To compare him with City's recent midfielders is like comparing the class of Concorde with that of a Cessna.

But Gibbo didn't charge blindly all over the park, he didn't do devastating tackles. He did one job essentially - but did it like the footballing equivalent of a Faberge craftsman.

And his efforts in that job were enough to help Leicester to glories we can only dream of today and emphatic wins over some of the best teams in the land...because other players in the team were craftsmen too.

Ian King - the centre-half in that team, didn't just break up attacks. He almost unerringly cushioned the ball down to a City foot with the minimum of touches. He had people like Frank McLintock or Colin Appleton alongside him so there was no need for Gibbo to be there too.

Part of my point is that it's hard enough to find Championship players who can do one job properly never mind three or four jobs like Gerrard.

Yet what do we do?

We constantly try to get two or three jobs out of people who are physically and technically incapable of taking such a load. Hence we score very few goals from the flanks, very few goals from midfield and even negate some of the potential of our main strikers. Why, because the sharpness needed for specialist work is lost on subsidiary work.

As I mentioned to the Under 21's, there's only one contributor that won't get knackered on a football field even on the hottest of days - and that's the ball. The faster you pass it accurately the more time everyone in your team is going to have.

And if individuals in each position pass the ball with speed and precision there's no need for their team-mates to go charging round wasting their energy.

Yet in that simple philosophy is the root cause of our demise. Our passing is simply not good enough. We give the ball away too easily and too often. Yet people who are the worst culprits are among our favourite players. Either they have to go or they have to change.

Because all the specialist jobs in football have one common denominator - the need for a good final ball whether it be the goalkeeper's speed in setting up a new attack or the striker finally directing the ball into the net.
