James. Posted 4 November 2007 Posted 4 November 2007 Hit the road jack, and don't you come back, no more, no more, no more, no more!! The club I was in last night was rocking when this came on. Now, this thread may not take off like an Arctic Monkeys one or whatever else NME are "pioneering" at the minute but f**k me this is good music. Music with soul. Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles. Legends. And downloading to my laptop as I write. So, if anyone else wants to recommend or discuss some real, soulful music stick it in here. Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles - Living for the City And as an added treat, one of my favourite songs ever... Bill Withers - Aint No Sunshine
Fez of Mahrez Posted 4 November 2007 Posted 4 November 2007 Been listening to Innervisions a lot lately. Just breathtaking. Mess Around by Ray Charles is one of the best dancing songs of all time. One of my favourite songs is I Forgot To Be Your Lover by William Bell. Never really fits into any threads on here but the most soulful song I've ever heard and well worth looking up, especially as you will recognise the sample from at least two recent tracks that I can think of.
Webbo Posted 4 November 2007 Posted 4 November 2007 Now you're talking music. Some of my favourites; Sam & Dave-Hold on I'm coming. And as I mentioned in another thread the brilliant Isley Brothers.

Yeah I definitely recognise that William Bell song. Also just listened to I've Got a Woman by Ray Charles and realised that's the basis of an admittedly quality Kanye West tune (with equally good drum n bass remix). Ray Charles was absolutely brilliant. I love finding new, old music.
James. Posted 4 November 2007 Author Posted 4 November 2007 Got soul? I'm not sure I know that chap. Is he a member of some obscure post-punk collective?

Ray Charles was absolutely brilliant. I love finding new, old music. It's been sampled on a couple of hip hop things that I've got. Famously on Dilated Peoples - Worst Comes to Worst, the other was a Ludacris album track called Growing Pains. Been used a few other times too. Fantastic track.

Finnegan Posted 5 November 2007 Posted 5 November 2007 I'm not sure I know that chap. Is he a member of some obscure post-punk collective? Haha. It's Andrew Strong of Commitments fame. Dublin soul!

No it's the lead singer from The Commitments film I think
James. Posted 5 November 2007 Author Posted 5 November 2007 I'd like to add Dusty Springfield to the current ensemble. Son of a Preacher Man is an obvious choice but such an amazing song. Her voice is like velvet. Stunning. Son of a Preacher Man

Webbo Posted 6 November 2007 Posted 6 November 2007 This was alway on the jukebox at 'The Victory' whenI was at college. Dobie Gray, Out on the floor.
purpleronnie Posted 6 November 2007 Posted 6 November 2007 Yeah Dobie Gray was a cool cat, I'm in with the in crowd and Drift away I guess were his biggest hits. I forgot about sly and the family stone a bit more funky!
Webbo Posted 15 November 2007 Posted 15 November 2007 Just to bump this thread up again, The best British voice alive today.
Bert Posted 16 November 2007 Posted 16 November 2007 I love "As" by Stevie Wonder. What a ****' record. Especially the first verse - As around the sun the earth knows she's revolving And the rosebuds know to bloom in early May Just as hate knows love's the cure You can rest your mind assure That I'll be loving you always As now can't reveal the mystery of tomorrow But in passing will grow older every day Just as all is born is new Do know what I say is true That I'll be loving you always.
Alexikokopops Posted 16 November 2007 Posted 16 November 2007 Just to bump this thread up again, The best British voice alive today. My mate is seeing a girl who's best friends with Joss Stone. She was thinking of going to Glastonbury and he was chatting away to her and she was like "blah blah blah, boring crap, oh, and Joss will be playing of course, blah blah blah". That's the gist of it anyway.

Daggers Posted 17 January 2008 Posted 17 January 2008 In my not inconsiderable period of time listening to music I have to say that La Winehouse has the singlemost soultastic female voice. Ever. Fact.
