Jimmy Posted 19 November 2007 Posted 19 November 2007 Maybe because he's never played a first team game with a proper winger in front of him? what is this mythical "winger" of which you speak?
Mark Posted 20 November 2007 Author Posted 20 November 2007 Mattock in the starting line up again tonight against Portugal. (kickoff 9pm). Tough test tonight for him
Manager Posted 20 November 2007 Posted 20 November 2007 Sheehan is on SS2 now. From Setanta Sport - Rep of Ire first points and first goal. Republic of Ireland U-21's struck late on to earn a 1-0 win over Bulgaria U-21's in Athlone on Tuesday evening. The home side dominated the play for the majority of the game and threatened early on with shots from Alan Sheehan and Stephen Quinn. Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Stephen Gleeson was the player who stood out in the opening exchanges as he buzzed forward with determined runs and spread some slick passes across the width of the pitch. For all of the possession that Ireland enjoyed in the first half, they did not really look like scoring until the 45th minute when Anthony Stokes picked out Adam Rooney with an inswinging cross. Rooney crashed a shot against the post and Barnet defender Joe O'Cearuill failed to score from the rebound when it looked easier to slot the ball into the back of the net. Bulgaria tried to push the hosts back and switch the pressure in their favour, but a long-range shot from Ivan Banelalovski was well saved by Darren Quigley. However, Ireland quickly woke up and had a chance of their own on 67 minutes when Rooney got in front of his marker and flicked the ball towards goal, but it was touched around the post by Bulgarian keeper Nikolay Mikailov. Soon after that Conor Powell should have had a penalty awarded against him, but referee Jerome Laperriere chose to ignore the cries from the Bulgarians. That decision gave the Irish some hope of securing a positive result. And Anthony Stokes almost got the goal they were searching for when Sheehan supplied him with a pass to fire a volley at goal, but Mikailov was alert to it. The game ticked into injury time and it looked as if the game was going to end in a draw. Then Eddie Nolan whipped a cross into the box and Watford midfielder John-Joe O'Toole blasted in a header to seal the win.

They played him left wing from what i saw and he looked at home. Still think he is a LB, he just needs some coaching off Walshie and he will be a top player
sdb Posted 20 November 2007 Posted 20 November 2007 any news on joey m? oo sounds like he got an assist! from a throw in. go joe!
Bert Posted 20 November 2007 Posted 20 November 2007 Adam Johnson restored parity, volleying home from Joe Mattock's long throw.
Manwell Pablo Posted 20 November 2007 Posted 20 November 2007 any news on joey m?oo sounds like he got an assist! from a throw in. go joe! I'll use that as ammo down the pub tomorrow but I don't think it really says much about Joe Tbh .
mancunianfox Posted 21 November 2007 Posted 21 November 2007 Thought Mattock did very well last night. Did not look at all out of place and we equalised from one of his throw ins. One thing that I did notice is how much more comfortable he looks with a decent midfielder in front of him. When we go back to 4-4-2 Mattock seems like he has the makings of a valuable player.
Bryn Posted 21 November 2007 Posted 21 November 2007 Mattock left back and Sheehan left wing in a 4-4-2 will do us til January then
Ric Flair Posted 21 November 2007 Posted 21 November 2007 Mattock left back and Sheehan left wing in a 4-4-2 will do us til January then It deserves another airing.
mancunianfox Posted 21 November 2007 Posted 21 November 2007 Mattock left back and Sheehan left wing in a 4-4-2 will do us til January then Its not the definitive answer because I still don't think Sheehan is a left sided midfielder. Would still prefer it to 5-2-3 or whatever it is were trying to play.
