James. Posted 16 January 2008 Share Posted 16 January 2008 I feel the need to discover some new music (and by new I mean music I haven't heard before). I keep scanning through the hundreds of albums on my iPod but am struggling to settle on one. There is a shitload of great music on it but I feel I want something fresh to get my teeth (ears?) stuck in to. As an example Fez' Stateless tip was superb... what an album, exactly why I like this part of the forum. So this thread should be about putting down original music ideas to open my (and other people's) ears to... I don't want to hear about Arctic Monkeys or the bestest ever person part 2 or the latest rubbish commercial brap hop or even (shock horror) bloody Portishead. Let's see what you lot are made of. GO! The People's Hero Posted 16 January 2008 Share Posted 16 January 2008 Black Dice - Load Blown. Different. GO! Also, if you like Los Lobos (do you? If you don't know check them out!) Anyway if you like them... try... Los Super Seven - Canto
Fez of Mahrez Posted 16 January 2008 Share Posted 16 January 2008 It's just one song but check out Errors - Salut! France. They supported Underworld at the Roundhouse in October and this track has really grown on me.
The People's Hero Posted 16 January 2008 Share Posted 16 January 2008 Give the Propellerheads a go if you don't have them already on your ipod. If you can find anything by Long Range - try that, it's a project between Will White (Propellerheads) and Phil Hartnoll (Orbital) who I know you're a fan of. I've struggled to find much though - not sure if they've put any material out or not, might just be a live experimental sort of thing, reckon it'd be right up your street though. The People's Hero Posted 16 January 2008 Share Posted 16 January 2008 Ah... here is their SITE Apparently they are reminiscent of Orbital and some of their best stuff. I have one track on a laptop which has unfortunately long since died. I wasn't a huge fan but then again I only got a few listens, never got round to giving it a proper go. Probably more your scene than mine.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 16 January 2008 Share Posted 16 January 2008 Not knowing your musical tastes inside out, this could be tricky nominal bro, but heres some albums you might wanna try... Out of Season - Beth Gibbons & Rustin Mann (Just got this and loving it) Ballad ot the Broken Seas - Isobel Campbell and Mark Laneghan Bubblegum - The Mark Laneghan Band Wind In The Wires - Patrick Wolf Dubside of the Moon - Easy Star All-stars (Radiodread is good too) Well that's enough of the mellow stuff, more get up outta your chair music... New Transistor Heroes - Bis (Glasgow's finest candy pop/rock) Clor - Clor EDC - Satchel Thunder, Lightning, Strike - The Go! Team XXY - Young Gods (Swiss techno-rock gods finest moments) Not NEW stuff admittedly (been too skint to buy much music recently ) but might be new to you. I too would be interested in any recommendations for new stuff.
hairy Posted 16 January 2008 Share Posted 16 January 2008 Burial - Untrue is a brilliant album from last year. Its dubstep and is a chilled UK Garage meets Massive Attack type thing. It will be massive by word of mouth. Atlas - Mirrored is another good album from last year. A bit out there, space rock type thing but very good. AoWW Posted 16 January 2008 Share Posted 16 January 2008 Out of Season - Beth Gibbons & Rustin Mann (Just got this and loving it) Again, not new exactly and many may have had a listen already but try: Bat for Lashes - very, erm, 'odd' Porcupine Tree - vaguely Pink Floyd-esque. James. Posted 16 January 2008 Author Share Posted 16 January 2008 This is quality. I already have loads to keep me occupied. TPH - that Orbital/Propellerheads thing sounds quality, and yeah I have the Props album. TAKE CALIFORNIA! Brother Trav - anything with Beth Gibbons will get me excited, cheers for that and the other stuff. And thanks to hairy, AoWW and Fez for their recommendations as well. KEEP THEM COMING! One from me. For those uninitiated to Ninja Tune this is one of the most downright original labels you will hear. Check out acts like Amon Tobin, Kid Koala, Vadim, Cinematic Ochestra, Bonobo, Saul Williams and One Self. Also Warp namely Aphex Twin and Squarepusher - you really won't have heard anything like that if you haven't already tried it out.

Lillehamring Posted 17 January 2008 Share Posted 17 January 2008 i'm assuming you have few genre boundaries but you don't say whether you want new/new or new-to-you-new.... anyway, i have just had the fortune to discover emitt rhodes, kinda old but some really interesting stuff, seems like a bit of lennon-fetishist, but in a good way... i#ve been listening to the album 'american dream'.... also, have you heard of a band called Múm.... super cool, um, lidderally nb: not to be confused with this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh_1atf_gKo...feature=related

Aphex Twin did that song with the odd video? or am I getting mixed up? edit: i'm not thinking of Come to Daddy either, I don't think

James. Posted 18 January 2008 Author Share Posted 18 January 2008 Have a word with yourself. Classic album. Not everyone on here is 15. Indeed. As far as Bristol-based trip hop nutters go he is pretty famous! Hell is round the corner where I shelter. Ism's and schisms, we're living helter skelter [been livin' on a study] If you believe and [or] deceive common sense says shouldn't receive Let me take you down the corridors of my life. "I'm not what you think I am, I'm the king of Siam. I've got a bald head, my name is Yul Bryner and I am a famous movie star. Perhaps you saw me in Westworld, I acted like a robotic cowboy." Who would think to use that as lyrics. One of my favourite songs ever. Also listen to any of Pavement's (Malkmus's band) back catalogue if you never heard before. Slanted and Enchanted was their first major album and a good starting point. One of my greatest regrets is not seeing them when they came and played The Charlotte many moons ago

Flynny Posted 18 January 2008 Share Posted 18 January 2008 I'd suggest Akron/Family's self titled album. Its pretty hard to describe. It's a low-fi slightly folky indie-rock album that feels really intimate. It's taken me a while to love it but it's easy to like.
