The People's Hero Posted 11 March 2008 Posted 11 March 2008 I'm relying on FT to come up with the goods here - have posted in Gen Chat and Music Discussion - please leave it there mods/admin because this is important. Someone I know is a fantastic singer and really wants to get their stuff heard. They have a demo cd etc and it's very good. How do I go about getting this in to hands of someone who is going to listen to it at a record label or whatever? Is it all based in London? It sounds stupid as the solution most would suggest is use google, but that's not helping me much. I know all the advice about go to karaoke places, get your voice heard, try to get spotted, send your cd everywhere, but in reality I honestly just don't know where to start with who to send it to. Which labels to target etc? - and how not to get the cd thrown straight in the bin? Does anyone on here have an 'in' in to this sort of thing. I absolutely promise you that you will not be dissappointed with the quality of voice on offer here. There's a few beers in it for anyone who can get me an intro or some contacts, whatever. - James
The People's Hero Posted 11 March 2008 Author Posted 11 March 2008 You need to get an A&R bod to a gig. Not currently doing gigs due to lack of equipment. Will advise doing open mic nights.
Leicfox Posted 11 March 2008 Posted 11 March 2008 I can't help you but when i go into Blackpool town centre there is this bloke who sits with his dog and a guitar, he's been there for months and has an amazing voice, last week when i went up there was a big comotion round him with video recorders rolling and such. Get busking is my advise.
MikeyT Posted 11 March 2008 Posted 11 March 2008 Theres a book called Contacts 2008! I used to have it. Its pretty handy. It may help. Cant promise it will, but its certainly worth a look. It has every agency in the country in it ranging from tv/film extras required through to radio. I cant remember if theres anything like recording agencies in it. But give it a go! Good luck! http://www.spotlight.com/shop/contacts
The People's Hero Posted 11 March 2008 Author Posted 11 March 2008 She's tried X-Factor. They got rid of her first round and put a load of jokers through. I've actually had this told to me by 3 or 4 people I know who've gone for it. This one is the best of the bunch though.
coale39 Posted 11 March 2008 Posted 11 March 2008 Myspace? Other simular but more-focused-on-music sites? edit Last.fm? Can hurt to sign up to loads
danny. Posted 11 March 2008 Posted 11 March 2008 - do you have any recorded demos? - are they online? - what genre of music?
Dr The Singh Posted 11 March 2008 Posted 11 March 2008 Very tough industry indeed, I knew a band that have been tryign for years, they were from Melton Mowbray actually!! They had minimal success becuase they actually weren't that good. As far as I know they played for free at venues such as 'the charlotte', also they contacted 'local' radio and got some air play, from which they got a manager and they played at better venues!!! The issue is what makes her specail or better then the rest of hopefuls!!! Most music and within there genre's sound similar, so gettting 'heard' is even more difficult!! Good Luck!!!!! If things really don't work out, there's always bhangra!!!!!!
Master Fox Posted 11 March 2008 Posted 11 March 2008 Myspace is a must to start with. Upload some songs!
The People's Hero Posted 11 March 2008 Author Posted 11 March 2008 - do you have any recorded demos?- are they online? - what genre of music? Yes - few demos - maybe 12/13 tracks. Mainly covers, but some original tracks (did have a record deal before). I could get the demos online. The genre of music is Female Vocalist. Has been pushed down the cheesy dance track before but really more in the mould of Eva Cassidy. I suppose the similar stuff out there at the moment is Katie Melua/Norah Jones ish.
Benjani Posted 11 March 2008 Posted 11 March 2008 Here's a female vocalist that is just getting started on Myspace. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea...endID=332764124 It's how Lily Allen and Arctics got famous! You just need to add bare people.

Alexikokopops Posted 11 March 2008 Posted 11 March 2008 If she wants to get heard she should probably sing a bit louder. OLE!
The People's Hero Posted 11 March 2008 Author Posted 11 March 2008 I might upload a track, see what you lot think.

The People's Hero Posted 11 March 2008 Author Posted 11 March 2008 F**king hell that's quite something to live up to! Yeah I know. I was just describing the sort of stuff that she likes to sing - it's a bold claim to make I know. If you want bold claims - here's another, at times she just looks exactly like a young (fit) Audrey Hepburn. Is that impressive or not? I've always thought so.
Daggers Posted 11 March 2008 Posted 11 March 2008 Jim - she needs to show she wants it and all the suggestions are good. It's not a case of pick and mix, she has to blanket it. Get the networking site done today, get some graphics in the pipeline to add to it and then add a website so that people can download stuff. She has to gig so that A&R can get an impression of her potential, live. Finally, just sending CD's to people has had its day...but doorstepping decision makers never went out of style if she has looks and a personality. If she wants to send me a 4-track CD I may be able to do something with it, but it needs to have a decent production and be her strongest material. I have more cousins
Daggers Posted 11 March 2008 Posted 11 March 2008 If you want bold claims - here's another, at times she just looks exactly like a young (fit) Audrey Hepburn. Get her to send a publicity shot too (...and if she really looks like that then she can send a nude snap for good measure)

Dr The Singh Posted 11 March 2008 Posted 11 March 2008 Get her to send a publicity shot too (...and if she really looks like that then she can send a nude snap for good measure) I see the real motive has come out now Daggers!!
