Charlton's Paddy Mac

He was good when he first came to us as well you know.

You'll soon realise the real McCarthy soon, I find it funny how Charlton fans are mocking us when they're doing nothing of great note and have a ticking bomb in their back 4 lol

Sorry but he was an awful captain.

He may have been a fighter and worked hard but a lot of the time he was an absolute idiot. A captain is supposed to lead by example and Paddy McCarthy talked himself into the book way too much for my liking. He was always a one to give away stupid fouls too in dangerous positions.

And McAuley/Kisnorbo don't?

McCarthy isn't a great defender, and certainly not in the Walsh/Elliott/Taggart class. But as a captain and leader, he's far better than Stephen Clemence.

Being a better leader than Stephen Clemence doesn't really make you a great leader, though, does it? I don't think either were particularly great, inspirational captains.

McAuley and Kisnorbo are hugely prone to mistakes, I think they're both greatly over-rated at this level and I think we generally tend to defend well as a team, which helps their reputation. Not to mention Marton Fulop's impact on our Goals Conceded.

That said, I'd still have both of them in my side ahead of Paddy Mac. He's just not that good.

I don't think either is hugely over rated. They are both solid Championship players. The only thing they are shit at is their distribution, which obviously is one of the most basic things in football.

As for pure defending, they are good enough at this level, and both better than McCarhty.

In the early games of Rob Kelly's reign, McCarthy looked like he might develop into a quality player (although the same could also be said about Matty Fryatt). He was genuinely inspirational in leading us away from the danger of the drop.

However, he lost his way the following season, and even a move south hasn't entirely put his career back on track.

I'd be very surprised if he reaches the Premier League. But I can't see McAuley or Kisnorbo doing so either. :(

Player of the season so far?

Ha!

That just slams the rest of the Charlton squad rather than praising him.

If I had a time machine and was placed in charge of the squad I'd sell him again. He's just one of a number of players that will prevent any team he plays for getting promoted like, err, Charlton

Everyone says that. From what I've seen it's unfair. I'd love to see the stats for their headers won, their successful tackle:tackle attempts ratio, the amount of last ditch tackles they make per game. Everytime I've seen them play they've been imperious. Admittedly I don't see every game - I probably see about 10 games a season max, including TV. So I wouldn't like to rush into telling season ticket holders that they're wrong. But I tend from experience to be inclined to take a more optimistic view than what is said on here and I think if McAuley and Kisnorbo saw some of the stuff that is said about them on here they'd wonder what on earth they could ever do to receive praise.

I especially don't agree with the Fulop bit - they've shown themselves capable of being very stingy at the back even with Henderson in goal.

I think Paddy is under rated by our fans, I never though he was that bad here, perhaps the odd mistake, perhaps lost his head a few times but compared to the players we have had playing for us in the last few years he's certainly not anywhere near the worst of them, i'd probably put him near the bottom of some of the better players we've had in last few years (if that makes sense lol)

Just watched Charlton v West Brom, and he was good, very good, Sky gave him MoM which imo was deserved.

Maybe not the worst of them - but he was captain...and that means he had a responsibility to sort out the team when they were under-performing, which he didn't. He never gave a **** about the club or how well we did, and then jumped ship at the first opportunity.

He was a spineless, money-grabbing tosser that I, for one, am glad has left us, never to return.

I spit on his memory.

Fortunately, having (as has been pointed out) the strongest defense in the League puts us in the position to say we have better than him here now.

Fortunately. :sweating::D

Some valid points, such as money-grabbing tosser but name at least 3 or 4 players who have played for us in the last few years who havn't been, Jumped ship? Well many were slagging him off so he took the opportunity to leave maybe? Never gave a fook about the club or how well we did? Again name 3 or 4 players who have in the last few years who have?

As for being captain and meaning he had a responsibility to sort the the team out when they were under-performing, He was young, learning his trade, unexperienced, and not his fault he was made club captain. And tbh wouldn't say Clemence had been much better, perhaps slightly but not a major difference.

I think he's a very good Ref :)

I watched the game on TV and thought he had a good game.

What weren't you happy with :dunno:

When Jerome Thomas was running down the wing the WBA player elbowed him in the face in pushed him over and the ref was right in front of it and gave nothing
