Asha Posted 30 March 2008 Posted 30 March 2008 Sportinglife.comAston Villa could move for Leicester youngster Joe Mattock who is valued at £1.5million No, in five years he'll be worth 10 times that.
ronnup Posted 30 March 2008 Posted 30 March 2008 I'd want 5 million for him. that's insane I reckon. Milan will want to recoup money. We'll sell plenty of youth this summer in order to build Olly's new army.
act smiley Posted 30 March 2008 Posted 30 March 2008 Not insane when you look at what other equally promising young players have gone for. Cardiff were supposed to have got between £3m and £4m for Gunter.

Agreed. £1.5m is taking the piss. He's surely worth more if the likes of Gunter and Gosling are/were.
Father Ted Posted 30 March 2008 Posted 30 March 2008 Keep him! We must do all to keep him and cash in later - well, if ever!

Thracian Posted 30 March 2008 Posted 30 March 2008 I don't know where the "valued at £1.5million" comes from. Mandaric has already signalled his total disinterest in a six figure offer. However, despite what fans would not want us to do, the increasing value of ex-Academy guys like Mattock and Stearman is one of the few things to put against the huge sums that have been wasted on unsuitable signings and paying off contracts. It's hard to second guess a value for anyone 10 years down the line. Dozens of things can change in that time. But I'd think a deal that might bring in £3-£5 million inclusive of add ons might be tempting. In fact, when you add that to the current value of Stearman you can see exactly what MM was getting for his £6.8m purchase of the club - and that doesn't put the likes of Gradel or Weso into the equation at all. I see no signs that we're ever going down the road of having lots of home grown youth players in the side. And it's ironic in considering the Mattock situation that a good few of the fans would sooner we played Clapham anyway, just as they would have played Clive Clarke. And fans were calling for Chambers to replace Stearman. Both Mandaric and Holloway will want stacks of experience in the team and are always going to work the loan system for all they can. Youth development will be continue to be cautious at best. So, sooner or later some of those ex-youth players will be moved on. And the secret is to maximise the return while hopefully strengthening the squad as we do it. Football is about people trading and the game is full of clubs that hit the skids because they failed to cash in at the best price as their wage bill increased chasing a dream that didn't come true and because they failed to have better replacements in the wings when they did sell. I'm quite sure MM wants the glory days to return to Leicester not least because of the vast millions that will flow into the coffers as a result but he won't want to post endless big losses in the meantime. Every player has a price. Just as you have to realistically weigh up their asset value.

Thats exactly what I was thinking. Mattock's tremendously promising but still learning. For 4-5 million we could buy a very good left-back in their 20's who knows exactly whats what AND buy a 20 goals a season striker. Probably.
Joe. Posted 30 March 2008 Posted 30 March 2008 When you consider the ridiculous sums of money paid for young, English talent these days £1.5 million seems like nothing. So I would have thought he's worth more than that quite comfortably.
Bert Posted 30 March 2008 Posted 30 March 2008 If Gareth Bale can go for £10m, so can Joe. Bale is only playing international football because he's Welsh (No dis-respect Finners ) and i'm sure it's the same with Gunter, because they don't have as many players coming through as England do, for obvious reasons. Bale got a few million quid pumped on him because he scored a few free kicks. Bale also is injury prone, whereas Joe doesn't seem to be.
Tomassi Posted 30 March 2008 Posted 30 March 2008 Minimum £3,000,000 17 yr old playing almost regular football for club and country(U21)... ...says it all really
Fez of Mahrez Posted 30 March 2008 Posted 30 March 2008 If Gareth Bale can go for £10m, so can Joe. So if Darren Bent can go for £16m, so can Lildave3?
Tommy G Posted 30 March 2008 Posted 30 March 2008 Every player has his price. Except Cristiano Ronaldo
lildave3 Posted 30 March 2008 Posted 30 March 2008 So if Darren Bent can go for £16m, so can Lildave3? I'm better.
brookfox Posted 30 March 2008 Posted 30 March 2008 Every player has his price.Except Cristiano Ronaldo Or the Million Dolla Man, who I imagine was a bit of a player in his time!
Bryn Posted 30 March 2008 Posted 30 March 2008 £3m minimum definately, in today's market. The day will come when he hits the media for whatever reason (I'm surprised his U21 debut didn't bring this about) and the bidding war is started, just like in the case of Walcott and Bale. They attracted national interest from the public and the papers and the big money move followed.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 30 March 2008 Posted 30 March 2008 If Villa bought Mattock they'd only park him elsewhere while he "matures" anyway. He is still learning and, therefore, isn't Premiership quality. His inclusion in Under 21 squad should bolster his value immensly.

Flynny Posted 30 March 2008 Posted 30 March 2008 Bale had impact because he scored goals, spectacular ones at times. I'm being speculative, but I can see Mattock doing the same given another season in the team. His ball striking technique has come on massively over the course of the season.

I hope you're right because having full-backs who get forward and have a pop is a real bonus to any team aiming for promotion.
Flynny Posted 30 March 2008 Posted 30 March 2008 I hope you're right because having full-backs who get forward and have a pop is a real bonus to any team aiming for promotion. According to Barber Mattock stuck in 3 beautiful crosses yesterday during the first half, and a lot of people marked Mattock a fair bit higher than you did. I'm not trying to make a point, but it sounded to me like he had a good game. Through the season I think he's looked a lot more comfortable going forward, I don't know if you agree. He gets right up to support the midfielder and if they drift inside and we're in an advanced position he's comfortable moving up into their space if the situation allows it. Hopefully soon we'll have the sort of full-back you won't have to compare groan-inducingly unfavourably to a certain someone.

Holloway has gone on record, worryingly, as saying he doesnt like to expose youngsters to the first team too much but let them learn in the reserves..... Now i am not sure i like the sound of that for everyone and certainly not for the likes of Mattock.. But, to be honest... if someone bid £5m for him then i would take that.. it would be ahrd not to... the £1.5m thing from Villa seems like a typical opening of the stakes by Villa or an agent. I can see them agreeing on £4m and then we will have the usual " couldnt stay in the lads way" " fantastic opportunity for him, ect.
