Nod.E Posted 16 April 2008 Share Posted 16 April 2008 At school, I'm always ripped for my 'shite' taste in music. Personally I prefer Indie rock, and anything along them lines. And I have a strong hate for RnB and all that kind of music
Jay Posted 16 April 2008 Share Posted 16 April 2008 can we not have a "I like a bit of everything I'm Mr Eclectic option" I love my punk rock, Hardcore always have always will BUT I also love my Hip Hop, Ninja Tunes, Mo Wax, Quannum, solesides stuff plus a bit of Drum and Bass, Country, Ska and just about most sub genres you can file things in!! Good music is Good Music and is not confined to a certain genre.

This isn't asking what music you like, it's asking which one you prefer.
Simi Posted 16 April 2008 Share Posted 16 April 2008 R&B and Hip-Hop. Believe it or not, I don't sit on the back of buses playing it out loud either. Just in case you thought it was impossible.
Samilktray Posted 16 April 2008 Share Posted 16 April 2008 This has to be one of the most frequent discussion of my short life yet. I can listen to either, but to those who know me its pretty obvious im a big fan of hiphop. The worst thing is when you get people who belittle hiphop due to only hearing the mainstream music that hits our TV's and radios.
Nod.E Posted 16 April 2008 Author Share Posted 16 April 2008 I may be wrong, but from what i've heard of hip hop and all that, the lyrics seem to be describing how and who they shagged last week.
LeeCovFox Posted 16 April 2008 Share Posted 16 April 2008 Not particularly a fan of rap or r 'n b, but then again I will listen to anything that I think sounds good, I'm fairly open minded. I suppose I fall into the indie/alternative camp, but what is now called indie just isn't anymore. The phrase is derived from the music that came from independent music labels rather than a genre of music, it just so happened that this was the type of music which predominated such labels. There are not many true independent labels anymore, which is quite sad, as it takes music away from the people and into the hands of big business. Even those that claim to be independent labels tend to be a subsidiary of large corporations these days. Unfortunately, the type of guitar music which was associated with these labels has now become manufactured, just as boy bands were when they were fashionable in the 1990's. A lot of these bands are now bland and uniform. There are some exceptions, though I won't name my personal favourites as it is, of course, subjective. Its just the way market forces effect things I suppose. There seemed, at least in my eyes, to be a backlash against the boybands and plastic pop at the beginning of this decade, with bands such as the Libertines and Bloc Party (not necessarily favourites of mine) coming to prominence and whetting the music buying public's appetite for guitar based rock. When groups such as these achieved some success, or at least some measure acceptability in more 'fashionable' crowds, a demand for the genre was established, noted by the major conglomerates in charge of the industry, resulting in the saturation of the music market with such music. Its swings and roundabouts, whatever is deemed fashionable by the money men will find its way into the market.
Lillehamring Posted 16 April 2008 Share Posted 16 April 2008 i voted indie. the other option is just a dead nothingness. i like r'n'b that actually is rhytym and blues, ie that it has at least some element of blues, not this bland soul that mascarades as r'n'b nowadays, never understood how the name has stuck for this music... and most mainstream rap has hardly moved on since the mid 80s... mind you, the same can be said of most modern indie acts... probably why i mainly listen to music from the 50s-70s... to be honest i'm totally disenchanted with the recording industry, can i vote for gabriel faure, please? Koke Posted 16 April 2008 Share Posted 16 April 2008 RnB and Hip hop. But as Chris Rock once said, sometimes I just can't defend it. Then again, as Samilktray said, there are more to hip hop than the mainstream garbage that hit our TV and radio.

I like proper rnb too. Classic stuff that my dad listens to like Dr.Feelgood. I'd pick "indie" but have chosen not to. On my mp3 I've got all types of stuff. Next to the Spice Girls I've got Still Remains (metal).
Tommeh Posted 16 April 2008 Share Posted 16 April 2008 Tbh I think I'm a split straight down the middle, I have different moods of which different genres suit. My ipod will vary between Dr Dre and The cribs and thats just because I like them both. As someone said good music is good music and there is no pacific genre. One thing that does annoy me though and ched touched on it, is when I listen to Hip hop stuff and get branded as a gangster/chav or what not. And when listening to indie stuff getting aksed "wheres yer skinny jeans?" etc.

Koke Posted 16 April 2008 Share Posted 16 April 2008 Stereotyping for the genre of music you listen to is one of the most frustrating things in life i find. That, and appearance. I'm not really fan of baggy clothes and I don't wear them but I've come across many many incidents where people who wear baggy trousers have been wrongly judged and stereotyped. And it's the same with music.

Koke Posted 17 April 2008 Share Posted 17 April 2008 Here is some other non-mainstream hip hop - Same guys as previous song. I mean, when you consider the fact that shits like Soulja Boy (Yes I do really hate him) gets so much popularity and fame and he makes millions of dollars in the process, it does piss you off. It's absolutely cringe worthy. [Verse 1]: Yeah It’s the contemporary form of slavery, they call it slave labour But they don’t prosecute them cuz it’s how they make paper When you rocking that fly shit that’s made in China By an eight year old child tryna feed his mama He exposed to contamination and disease And only fifty-five percent of them will get degrees And the women have to try to placate the boss Because it’s sex discrimination in the labour force The slave master only let them speak in sign language And they’re suffering from lung disease and eye damage fourteen hour shifts, seven days a week two shitty meals a day, very little sleep Human life only worth three cents an hour All human right laws loose sense of power What did four hundred years in the grave passes? Only the improved cleverness of slave masters. [Chorus]: Is life worth living if you living in hell? When the mind is confined to a prisoner’s cell? And the lies they devise in the system that fail But I expect the system to fail! Is life worth living if you living in hell? When the mind is confined to a prisoner’s cell? And the lies they devise in the system that fail But I expect the system to fail! [Verse 2]: It’s one point six million people locked in jail They do new slave labour force trapped in hell They generate over a billion dollars worth to power And only getting paid twenty cents an hour They make cloths for McDonald’s and for Apple Bee’s And working fourteen hour shifts in prison factories And while we sit around debating who the wack MC is They have to work when arthritic pain attack the knees Slavery is not illegal, that’s a fooking lie! It is illegal, unless it’s for conviction of a crime The main objective is to get you in your fooking prime. And keep the prison full and not give you a fooking dime But they the real criminal keeping you confined For a petty crime but they give you two-to-nine And ain’t nobody there to protect ya Except a bunch of incompetent human rights inspectors [Chorus]: Is life worth living if you living in hell? When the mind is confined to a prisoner’s cell? And the lies they devise in the system that fail But I expect the system to fail! Is life worth living if you living in hell? When the mind is confined to a prisoner’s cell? And the lies they devise in the system that fail But I expect the system to fail!
