Well done mate. Massive achievement after being ill. How'd Allyson get on?

PB for her too - 2:08

Jesus.

Did the Cov half-marathon today in 28 degree heat and collapsed 100 yards from the finish. Unconscious for 5 minutes and don't remember a single thing about it happening or getting to Coventry hospital.

Was in hospital on a drip for 10 hours. Very scary stuff waking up delirious and thinking I'd broken my right arm and leg.

Blimey, well done for trying it on a day like this. I got badly dehydrated doing a short run on a really hot day once, I shudder to think what doing a half marathon would be like.

Sounds like you shouldn't have tried so hard to make it to the end, a heroic effort.

Hope you're feeling better and had some nice nurses cooing over you.

Finished 7th overall (out of 70 or so) and 1st place 18-29 men with a 21:26 5k.

Not the easiest course, and it's quite humid, but I think my high finish says less about me and more about the field.

I was quite proud of my acheivement of running 2 miles non stop after only starting running 4 weeks ago (Ive never ran a step before) until I read this thread and realised its actually quite pathetic lol

Im aiming to do a 1/4 marathon next year which I think is probably the best I'll ever do at my age!

Were you running at the end with an Asian lad who answers to the name "Chocolate Bear"? My mate Amit was running it and said that he ran the end bit with someone who collapsed about 100 yards from the finish line.

Hope you're alright!

Ta for the good wishes

Had a week of slobbing about and drinking dioralyte, then had to go to the docs last Tuesday for tests on my kidney and liver functions. Been on a few runs since though, and all is good. Tests will come back showing all is well... I hope

I didn't run round the course shouting 'chocolate bear' so I wouldn't know. :giggle: Nah, all I remember is leaving the park and and getting onto the main road wondering where the finish was. I would have finished in about 1 hour 32, if that narrows it down? :dunno:

I'd like to get into running and lose a bit of weight for the summer, has anyone got any tips on how to go about starting off?

Start off by doing runs based upon time rather than distance i.e. go out for a 10 minute run as opposed to a two mile run.

Other tips;

a. Go out either early morning or evening - not in the mid-day sun.

b. Take in plenty of water both before and after (if really hot take some water with you).

c. Don't over-tighten your shoelaces (your feet will expand during the run and can become quite painful).

d. Find some stretching exercises on the internet to do before and after.

e. Don't run within 3 or 4 hours of a meal.

f. Learn to listen to what you body is telling you - if you're feeling tired then you probably are, so take a rest day.

g. Eat healthily.

Run on a day on/day off basis to start with, then after a couple of weeks up the 10 minute runs to two days on/one day off. After a couple more weeks, take stock and see how your muscles are feeling then start to play about with the number of days on/off and the length of run.

Once you're up to 20 minutes you'll probably be running 2 to 3 miles. At that point you could start to train based upon mileage. The 'rule of thumb' was never to increase your mileage by more than 10% of the previous week.

Hope this helps.

Been struggling to run recently, with the heat affecting my asthma and my hayfever being really bad. But I took part in the Race for Life this morning, and finished the 10K race in 49 minutes, which I am chuffed to bits with. I really didn't think I'd be anywhere near that time, as much as I wanted it to be. scarf.gif

If you would like to sponsor me, it's not too late

Thanks!

I've been running for a few months now, but in standard trainers which isn't great. Can anyone recommend me any decent running shoes as there are so many options available I'm a bit unsure as to what to go for. Anything up to about £60 is good.

Thanks

I could, but I might run differently to you, so it would be no good.

You need to find out if you pronate, supinate or are a neutral runner. Once you know, it's usually trial and error as to what you get on with. Brooks, Saucony or Asics tend to be okay, but you may not get on with them.

One tip; buy them about a size bigger than your normal shoe size; your feet expand whilst running.

Go the 'Leicester Running Shop' in Clarendon Park. I was there for 3 hours and tried on about 15 pairs of shoes. They do a 'gait analysis' at no charge and get you the perfect shoe for your running style.

Trying to get into running, just going across the fields. I want to go on the flat road, but i feel really self conscious.

Field = Nice and i'm on my own, but i go with white shoes, and come back brown, and smelling of shit lol
