Nationwider Posted 27 July 2008 Posted 27 July 2008 England got their selection badly wrong in the last test. Whilst I could (just) see the logic in Pattinson playing ahead of Tremlett, the fact the Ambrose batted at six was just plain wrong. I've got nothing agaist Ambrose as a keeper, but to go in at six at test level you need an average in the 40's at least. Ambrose is nowhere near that standard at this level. Like a lot of county keepers (like Read), he can come in lower in the order and punish the pie throwers on the county circuit, but against high-quality opposition (Aus, SA, Sri Lanka) he looks a number 9 at best. He should certainly bat below Broad in my opinion. I'd resist the temptation to promote Broad just yet, no mattter how unflappable he looks. He should become a fine all-rounder, but he needs to cement his place as a bowler first. I like the look of Flintoff and Broad at 7/8. If England want to play five out-and-out bowlers, they probably need to take another look at Prior or Foster at six. If they are going with four, they should either get Collingwood back in or give Shah the rest of the summer to stake his claim.
Flynny Posted 27 July 2008 Posted 27 July 2008 I don't see how Harmison is going to play. If you put Sidebottom back in which surely must happen, you're dropping either Broad or Anderson for Harmison. Neither deserve such harsh treatment but Broad's vunerable and so they might drop him - which'd weaken the batting lineup yet further. For me Broad is the only reason Flintoff's been able to come back in at all.
The People's Hero Posted 28 July 2008 Author Posted 28 July 2008 Owais Shah keeps plugging away and making the runs but for whatever reason - he's just not fancied - not in a test side. As for the keeper, taking both batting and keeping in to account, Prior is leagues above anything else we have and should be playing every test for us (as well as one day).
SamL Posted 29 July 2008 Posted 29 July 2008 Steve Harmison and Stuart Broad have been left out of the team for the 3rd Test. Broad has been replaced by Collingwood so we've decided to go for an extra batsman. It's a little unfair on Broad but I suppose they don't want to overwork him at his age.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 Heard a Radio interview with Patto this morning....said the pressure was very great as all the media jumped on him and it made it quite hard to adapt.
billyfox1 Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 It's a little unfair on Broad but I suppose they don't want to overwork him at his age. isn't he playing for notts today ?
SamL Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 isn't he playing for notts today ? Nottinghamshire will welcome England discards Darren Pattinson and Stuart Broad back as they look to stay on top of County Championship Division One.Broad misses the start of the match as he must remain with England as cover, but he will replace Andre Adams when he returns, no doubt keen to impress. For me, Broad has impressed since he's come into the side. He's primarily a bowler so he's in the side to take wickets which he hasn't been doing. I think he's lacked a little rhythm at certain times. I think the selectors know this and have dropped him which is a little harsh.
billyfox1 Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 i agree. i can't see what harm it would have done to keep him. They know he can get wickets otherwise he would never have been selected in the first place, and it doesn't do the team any harm to have a tail-ender scoring 50+ evertime he goes into bat.
The People's Hero Posted 30 July 2008 Author Posted 30 July 2008 This will probably do Broad good, take him out of the spotlight for a bit. England will get massacred in the press if they lose this test match.
SamL Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 This will probably do Broad good, take him out of the spotlight for a bit.England will get massacred in the press if they lose this test match. It will. He needs a little time off to regain some rhythm and have a rest. He's played every single test since we were on tour in Sri Lanka last year, and for a player of Broads age that could be quite tiring. I think it'll do him the world of good. I just hope it doesn't prove to be too much of a gamble leaving him out of the side. Yes it's good for him to have a break but is it good for the team in this test? It'll be good in a few matches down the line, but not necessarily for this match. It might be a big risk playing only 3 seam bowlers because Flintoff will have a heavy workload which I hope isn't too much for him.
The People's Hero Posted 30 July 2008 Author Posted 30 July 2008 COME ON ENGLAND! It's strange. I really couldn't care less about our national football side. I feel no connection. But I love test cricket and our test side. So proud when we won the Ashes a few years back.
Milky Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 Strauss just stepped on his stumps out of nowhere Then Vaughan gets a dubious goldy it was all going so well
Maybes Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 Vaughan got a big fat 0? He really is sh!te. A good captain he might be, but his batting skills must surely be questioned now by the selectors.
Simi Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 Michael Vaughan is like the Steve Howard of test cricket.
billyfox1 Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 i'm going to guess KP's batting figures. Balls faced 4 Runs 20 4's - 2 6's - 2 caught
Milky Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 it's funny how the keeper and 1st slip didn't even appeal!!!
Simi Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 it's funny how the keeper and 1st slip didn't even appeal!!! Mini-collapse going to continue now do we reckon?
Milky Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 i'm going to guess KP's batting figures.Balls faced 4 Runs 20 4's - 2 6's - 2 caught I'm going to guess a century.
billyfox1 Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 Michael Vaughan is like the Steve Howard of test cricket. That's not fair. Even steve Howard can last 5 mins.
