Asha Posted 14 July 2008 Posted 14 July 2008 Buy a game for 30/40 quid, or download for free at a very small risk of getting done in for it. Not exactly a difficult decision is it?

Ahhh but where does that line of thinking stop? Downloading films/music? Stealing from a big, well insured, multinational shop? Stealing a mobile left unattended? Asking a smaller kid to 'lend' you money? Grabbing a purse/handbag from an elderly lady? Mugging someone at knife point? Where do you draw the line???
Simi Posted 14 July 2008 Posted 14 July 2008 Ahhh but where does that line of thinking stop? Downloading films/music? Stealing from a big, well insured, multinational shop? Stealing a mobile left unattended? Asking a smaller kid to 'lend' you money? Grabbing a purse/handbag from an elderly lady? Mugging someone at knife point? Where do you draw the line??? That is pathetic.

You sound like the advert before Films start in a cinema or on a dvd, nothing wrong with sharing games, films, music think of the people who dont have alot of money and carnt afford to go out and buy new games, dvds each week
Simi Posted 14 July 2008 Posted 14 July 2008 Ahhh but where does that line of thinking stop? Where do you draw the line??? Oh, and by the way. I draw the line here.... No really, I don't see the difference?
Simi Posted 14 July 2008 Posted 14 July 2008 What's the difference? No really, I don't see the difference? I don't have to get off my arse to do the first one?

What a pile of condescending 'Holier than thou' crap!
Finnegan Posted 14 July 2008 Posted 14 July 2008 Stealing a mobile left unattended?Asking a smaller kid to 'lend' you money? Grabbing a purse/handbag from an elderly lady? Mugging someone at knife point? All of these things directly put out another member of our society. Downloading a film / sharing a CD / stealing a Mars Bar from Morrisons does none of these things.
Phube Posted 14 July 2008 Author Posted 14 July 2008 All of these things directly put out another member of our society.Downloading a film / sharing a CD / stealing a Mars Bar from Morrisons does none of these things. Depends how far down the line you go? It's like uninsured drivers... sure it only costs the Insurance company, but they always pass the costs on to us Law Abiding citizens! P.s. Is robbing banks/fraud okay as well then?!
Finnegan Posted 14 July 2008 Posted 14 July 2008 Depends how far down the line you go? It's like uninsured drivers... sure it only costs the Insurance company, but they always pass the costs on to us Law Abiding citizens!P.s. Is robbing banks/fraud okay as well then?! Mmmh, you somewhat miss the point. I'm not talking about "down the line" at all, I'm talking about directly harming / upsetting / scaring another member of our community. You steal an old woman's handbag you aren't just taking her property - that's the least of her worries - you're stripping her of her safety, her security, her right to exist unmolested. You download a DVD and you're not physically harming or emotionally scarring anyone. All you're doing is refusing to pay someone for the service they provide - and yes there are fiscal side effects for that but you're not devastating anyone's existence. If you want to have a sensible debate on this forum I'm sure the likes of Daggers, Hairy and probably myself (if I can be bothered) will have one with you. But you're going to have to learn a bit of common sense and perspective if you want to do so. When you've dropped the attitude that stealing a penny sweet is about as evil as genocide, we'll talk.
Daggers Posted 14 July 2008 Posted 14 July 2008 If you want to have a sensible debate on this forum I'm sure the likes of Daggers, Hairy and probably myself (if I can be bothered) will have one with you. But you're going to have to learn a bit of common sense and perspective if you want to do so. The elementary precursors have all been mentioned before in previous related threads and yet our two resident evangelical campaigners chose to ignore them. I will carry on sampling music and software and by doing so contribute in a positive fashion to sales of products by purchasing things that I otherwise would not have done. It is a victimless "crime" as the only "theft" is one of intellectual property - not concrete property with the inherent related costs of production, shipping and storage. One therefore has to recognise intellectual property theft as an entity, which I don't...nor does anyone on this forum who "steals" their avatars or sig bars from the internet. Those poor graphic designers Phube - you are stealing food from the mouths of their children by stealing the products of their labour. Or rather - you aren't...but that is your argument, not mine. Historical research proves that there is no negative link to file sharing and a whole host demonstrates a positive link between file sharing and sales of product The Heritage Organisation Harvard Gazette Harvard Business School and the University of North Carolina - the full report as a PDF CNET - file sharing boosts CD sales BBC - Downloading myths challenged I buy much more as a result of sampling from sharing - as a cursory glance at my extensive music collection would testify. I buy far more 360 games as a result of sampling DS games or downloading trials. To attempt to equate people who download/share with knife crime or store thieves is trite, narrow-minded bollocks.

Stealing a mobile left unattended? Asking a smaller kid to 'lend' you money? Grabbing a purse/handbag from an elderly lady? Mugging someone at knife point? Where do you draw the line??? Absolutely ridiculous. Your comparing downloading music to mugging someone at knife point All of these things directly put out another member of our society.Downloading a film / sharing a CD / stealing a Mars Bar from Morrisons does none of these things.
