Ahhh but where does that line of thinking stop?

Downloading films/music?

Stealing from a big, well insured, multinational shop?

Stealing a mobile left unattended?

Asking a smaller kid to 'lend' you money?

Grabbing a purse/handbag from an elderly lady?

Mugging someone at knife point?

Where do you draw the line???

What the hell....

I buy much more as a result of sampling from sharing - as a cursory glance at my extensive music collection would testify. I buy far more 360 games as a result of sampling DS games or downloading trials.

Hell yeah. I bet I've got a bigger CD collection than over half the forum and I've probably downloaded more music than a lot of you, too.

I fail so much at non-consumerism, my secret vice is a love for material possession. Not in a Paris Hilton / David Beckham styleé but I love nothing more than a brand new CD. I love the packaging, the sleeve art, the sleeve notes, the bulk of my racks. It's great. You get far more from a CD than you ever will an MP3 and I'm happy to own 'em all.

But I probably wouldn't have heard of half the bands in my CD collection if it wasn't for file-sharing.

Agree with all of this.

Hang on then, so if Phube is correct...

surely everyone who's ever seen a fiver on the floor and picked it up will at some point steal from an old lady and then every house on the street and will eventually go for the crown jewells...

I mean, what...the...fcuk?

When companies i.e. zavvi, HMV lower their CDs/DVDs/Games to a reasonable price they might have more of a case, but they don't.

That is stealing... so logically yes! :P

yes there are fiscal side effects for that but you're not devastating anyone's existence.

Your wrong.

Every time someone downloads a track or a movie or a game a puppy dies.

This is the result of last nights 'muggings'

I think, in approximately 1986 i last bought an LP record (joe Jackson for those that care) at the time it cost me $27, remember... this was more than 20 years ago.

Prior to that time i had bought an enormous amount of LP's that added up to thousands of dollars, all at ridiculous prices. Now in 2008 I can buy that same album, or his latest release for less than $16 (and this includes a DVD).

my point?

I paid so much throughout my life before the internet that these thieving bastard music companies owe me.

I havent bought a cd since 2000, long live file sharing.

And if you havent heard it, go and download... "download this song" by MC Lars...it explains it all.

Mmmh, you somewhat miss the point. I'm not talking about "down the line" at all, I'm talking about directly harming / upsetting / scaring another member of our community. You steal an old woman's handbag you aren't just taking her property - that's the least of her worries - you're stripping her of her safety, her security, her right to exist unmolested.

You download a DVD and you're not physically harming or emotionally scarring anyone. All you're doing is refusing to pay someone for the service they provide - and yes there are fiscal side effects for that but you're not devastating anyone's existence.

If you want to have a sensible debate on this forum I'm sure the likes of Daggers, Hairy and probably myself (if I can be bothered) will have one with you. But you're going to have to learn a bit of common sense and perspective if you want to do so.

When you've dropped the attitude that stealing a penny sweet is about as evil as genocide, we'll talk.

To be fair, the lad is right here!

I would have said something of the same element.

Phube just relax on this matter. It is all about choice, you either do it or you don't.

Let us worry about the potential disconnection/fines IF we are caught.

Whether taking an unnowed 5 quid lying on the street is stealing, which by the way I dont think it is, or not....it doesn't mean I'm now going to kill everyone.

There's no logic to that.

You will find it is against the law... classed as stealing. It should be handed into a Police station, and if no-one claims it by x no. of days then you can legally claim it!

EDIT:

Why? You 'steal' a DVD? :P

Seriously though, if it were £100 say then yeah I'd think about giving it police station, maybe.

But for a fiver, it would cost me 3 quid bus fair to get to town to find the police station, and then another 3 quid after the x no of days to come back and claim it.

Plus if you lose a fiver, you don't go the police station and say 'I lost my fiver  ' do you?

Not worth doing really.

So now you're drawing a line on value... interesting...

Obviously not £5, but £10... £20.. £50..??

I'm not drawing a line, I'm just saying that by finding a fiver on the floor t'other day and spending it i'm not a criminal.

So you break the law because paying for image rights is a bit more difficult that pointing and clicking on a Paypal sign.

About a year ago, I was really hard up, really struggling. Myself and friend were hosting a charity dinner at a hotel and had a couple of complimentary rooms (it was on the night of the day we rolled over away at Colchester and drew 1-1) - anyway, I'd had to borrow money to even pay for my own ticket to this charity thing and borrowed some more from a friend for some raffle tickets. Whilst getting changed in to my DJ for the dinner, I found a wallet on the floor, in the corner of the bathroom.

Inside was £420 pounds - 8 £50 notes and a £20 note.

I went and handed it in to reception. Later that night, when my girlfriend wanted a drink and I couldn't afford to buy her one I felt physically sick.

I honestly regret handing that in to the hotel reception.

Judge me anyway you want, but boy do I wish I'd pocketed it.

It seems that to stop this trend, more creative ideas are coming out though rather than trying to nab thousands of illegal downloaders, like adding 'special DVD's' (which i sometime buy but never watch - just have to have the special edition.) giving CD's away with papers instead (and make money from the inflated cost of going to see a band live) re-releasing the same album serveral times with newer packaging or a 'Bonus track'

But lets face it guys - if the people who owned the rights to these things wanted you to download them for free they'd let you. You may feel you're doing nothing wrong, but for example if only one person bought a copy of Football Manager 09 and then distributed it for free to everyone else who wanted it, I doubt there would be a Football Manager 2010.

Yes companies have budgets for these sort of things - but wouldn't the world be a better place if they didn't need to?

It would be a better world if there wasn't blatant obscene profiteering, if companies didn't produce products with built in obsolescence or if they didn't segment the market to include an increased price differential for everyone in the UK. It would be a better world if media companies didn't try to use DRM to dictate to me what I can and can not do with legally purchased media and prevent me from making legitimate back up copies. It would be a better world if they didn't propagate myths and lies.

None of that justifies file-sharing but the simple fact (and I use that word on the back of unrefuted research) is that file-sharing has contributed to an increase in revenue for the major media corporations and has opened up an avenue for new artists to get their music heard so they can make it onto the stage.

To attack people who file-share as 'thieves', to paint it in such a superficially black and white manner fails to take into account any true fact surrounding the issue. Moreover, it displays an absence of thought because the individual is simply regurgitating an industry lie founded on the bullshit that is copyright.

No one in the industry cares about file-sharing in the States of the UK - it is simply to be seen to be doing something about it enables them to obtain support at a Governmental level in the pursuit of action in countries such as China where corporations scent big revenue streams not trickling back to them.

Of course, there will always be a tiny percentage of people who do nothing but take, without buying anything - they are at one end of the bell curve, the opposite end to Phube and Tommy G who purchase everything and never download anything. I don't think either group is destroying the world and I don't remember the media world being particularly lovely before the advent of digital media either.

Home taping is killing music? Bollocks. anarchy-a-small.gif
