Daggers Posted 19 July 2008 Posted 19 July 2008 Police have released an image of a distraction burglar who stole around £10,000 from the Leicestershire home of a 74-year-old man. Two men had called at the house on Cotley Road in Mowmacre on 8 July just after 1015 BST. One said he was from the water board and had to check the water pressure. The other went upstairs to search. Det Con Danny Ibbotson described the burglary as "very distressing for the victim". One suspect is described as white, aged 16-17, of medium build, around 5ft 5in tall with light, highlighted hair. The other is also white, in his early 30s, between 5ft 2in and 5ft 9in, with greyish hair combed back and thinning on top. BBC
MC Prussian Posted 19 July 2008 Posted 19 July 2008 With all due respect to the elderly, what the **** is a 74-year old doing with 10 grand at home?
Maybes Posted 19 July 2008 Posted 19 July 2008 With all due respect to the elderly, what the **** is a 74-year old doing with 10 grand at home? What I though. Bizarre.
Stevosevic Posted 20 July 2008 Posted 20 July 2008 With all due respect to the elderly, what the **** is a 74-year old doing with 10 grand at home? Maybe hes one of these older blokes who doesn't like/believe in banks?
Daggers Posted 20 July 2008 Author Posted 20 July 2008 With all due respect to the elderly, what the **** is a 74-year old doing with 10 grand at home? Maybe he banked with Northern Rock?
Bert Posted 20 July 2008 Posted 20 July 2008 How would the attacker know there was a big amount of cash there?
davieG Posted 20 July 2008 Posted 20 July 2008 With all due respect to the elderly, what the **** is a 74-year old doing with 10 grand at home? Lots of older people have never had a bank account and many do not trust them with their money -frankly who can blame them. How would the attacker know there was a big amount of cash there? I doubt he knew there was any more than a few quid there, and if there was he'd have still taken it only it wouldn't have made the news.
Babylon Posted 20 July 2008 Posted 20 July 2008 Lots of older people have never had a bank account and many do not trust them with their money -frankly who can blame them. ?????? Why? Even if a bank went bust they would be guaranteed to receive back the first 35k of their savings. Slightly more secure than a cake tin under your bed or wherever they put it. No sympathy for people who do this kind of thing.
Darkzzz_ Posted 20 July 2008 Posted 20 July 2008 Scum. I hate these kind with a passion! Looks like a pikey to me.
DB11 Posted 20 July 2008 Posted 20 July 2008 Own fault for having so much money in the house. Also, it's been in the news a lot about distraction burglaries so he really should have taken notice and been suspicious. However, still not right to take money so I hope he gets caught etc.

Well I guess when you've lived through some rough times you can have a different take on life and people, maybe his trust in 'officialdom' has been severely tested in the past, who knows, who knows the circumstances? As for that guarantee hasn't only just come into existence, he probably doesn't even know it exists. Besides it still doesn't excuse the those that stole it, as I said they would have taken someone's one and only last fiver and do but you wont hear about that.

Also, it's been in the news a lot about distraction burglaries so he really should have taken notice and been suspicious. However, still not right to take money so I hope he gets caught etc. I don't know the circumstances of the chap concerned but he's 74, he's from a different era and I can vouch for what davie says that there are many people of his generation like him who are alone and who do similar things. It's not a question of understanding banking regulations or feeling susceptible to distraction burglaries, it's about doing what they feel is the right thing. Many of the older people I meet on a day to day basis literally still hoard things (including money) to save for a rainy day. Unfortunately they want to live their lives in times gone by when they could rely on those around them to look after them. Times when literally communities did look out for each other and whilst from our experiences we know that this is no longer the case, some of the more vulnerable members of society do not. Why should it be his fault that the money has gone? There is a fair chance that this mans remaining time in this life will now go to the other extreme where he dare not answer his door or indeed go out of his house. Psychologically it will be very difficult for him to get over this. If you want to apportion blame DB11, do not aim any of it at the victim.
Babylon Posted 20 July 2008 Posted 20 July 2008 As for that guarantee hasn't only just come into existence, he probably doesn't even know it exists. It has been there as long as I can remember, they have said recently is would be upped to 50k though. Which is why I screamed at the TV when all the silly sods were queuing up outside northern rock trying to get there money out thinking it would be lost. Why the people on the news didn't explain this to people annoys me, all they do is whip up a frenzy to get a better story. I hope the people who stole his money get cat aids.

There you are then, I didn't know about it but then I'm an 'oldie' as well
Daggers Posted 20 July 2008 Author Posted 20 July 2008 No sympathy for people who do this kind of thing. Own fault Harsh. He's an old bloke - which doesn't mean he should understand the full workings of the banking system or be responsible for being suckered in by a con-artist. I hope you retain your full faculties into old age but many don't and shifting the blame onto him rather than the cnut who robbed him I find an odd sense of priority. I don't care whether he got taken for a quid or a million, the simple fact is that this shit abused the trust of an old man. He took advantage of someone who is one of the weakest members of our society in the knowledge that if he ever gets caught he'll suffer a slap on the wrists at worst, and then be able to carry on doing it to others. Are you happy to have your parents or grand-parents treated in this manner (regardless of what is taken)?

I just don't have sympathy for people who keep £10,000 in their house. It's asking for trouble, whether it be theft, damaged or misplaced. I feel sorry for him that some scumbag has done it too him... but not that he lost 10k.

Just I say it and I'll get crucified

Surely, simply having db11 agreeing with you should give you pause for reflection? It is like having your political opinions validated by Craig BNP Adams, lush and afox
Sly Posted 20 July 2008 Posted 20 July 2008 Having £10k stashed in your own home isn't the most sensible thing you could do. Have the police even probed into how the old fella came to have £10k knowing about his joint? Another thing I don't understand is....how the hell do you prove someone stole £10k from you? If it's all in cash, then your surely going on his word! I do however feel the tea leaves responsible should be apprehended and public humiliated!!
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 20 July 2008 Posted 20 July 2008 Maybe he had only just got out the 10k in cash to pay some dodgy builder to build a conservatory for him?
hebangsthedrums Posted 20 July 2008 Posted 20 July 2008 Well if I were a member of the Leicestershire Constabulary I would be asking Joey Gudjohnssen where he was on the night in question..
The Stig Posted 20 July 2008 Posted 20 July 2008 Own fault for having so much money in the house. Trigger said I was wrong to congratulate you the other day. He may well have been right.

Also, it's been in the news a lot about distraction burglaries so he really should have taken notice and been suspicious. Unbelievable!!! Whether it was £10 or £10,000, you can't put any blame on the man who got robbed. If they'd stolen valuable war medals then would it have been his fault for fighting for his country?? Or if they'd stolen a large expensive TV then would it have been his fault because he should read more?? Just think about what you're saying before you type for once.
