Daggers Posted 2 August 2008 Posted 2 August 2008 I can't believe we didn't have a thread on punk. Hell. I've been busy sorting out the Archos for the terribly long car journey all day and I've had a wonderful time listening to snippets of albums as I checked they were listed correctly. High points of the day for me: SLF Ramones Bad Religion (that was at least an hour of track sampling) Buzzcocks Generation X Leyton Buzzards Fugazi Rezillos Ruts Angelic Upstarts I about to do The Stranglers, the first of the 'The...' section You can't beat a bit of Punk, I used to have a blue mohican you know...
Bellend Sebastian Posted 2 August 2008 Posted 2 August 2008 Were Crass punk and what did you think of them? I've always been afraid to ask that
MrCrowley Posted 2 August 2008 Posted 2 August 2008 Cant beat a bit of Ramones Was lucky enough to see em a few times
Daggers Posted 2 August 2008 Author Posted 2 August 2008 Were Crass punk and what did you think of them?I've always been afraid to ask that Crass would probably reject labels, I never liked them that much. Humourless bunch those anarcho-syndicalists. I'm liking a bit of Turbonegro at the mo'
Bellend Sebastian Posted 3 August 2008 Posted 3 August 2008 Crass would probably reject labels, I never liked them that much. Humourless bunch those anarcho-syndicalists. I only asked as I've been checking them out having acquired Jeffrey Lewis' Crass covers album. I think it's fair to say that old Jeff has significantly reworked them from what I've heard of the originals. And no, they don't strike me as much of a laugh either
Jay Posted 3 August 2008 Posted 3 August 2008 If we're going old school!! Minor Threat Black Flag The Descendents Nation of Ulysses I see you mentioned Bad Religion but always worth mentioning again especially if Suffer is involved Will all do for me!! oh can we have a bit of The minutemen on the list as well!! oh and if we're going to go really really old school you can't get much more punk rock than this
Jordan Posted 3 August 2008 Posted 3 August 2008 Yeeeaaahhh Some first-wave 'merican DIY punk for you: (followers included Nirvana and Hot Snakes) Pagans - Street Where Nobody Lives (great band from Cleveland, often overlooked b/c of Pere Ubu and the Dead Boys) Crime - San Fransisco's Doomed (one of my favorite old school bands. Sonic Youth covered the classic "Hot Wire My Heart") I only asked as I've been checking them out having acquired Jeffrey Lewis' Crass covers album. I think it's fair to say that old Jeff has significantly reworked them from what I've heard of the originals. Some of the tracks on that are excellent; I like Crass and I think Lewis did a great job with a concept that could have easily been a disaster. Other Lewis works that might be of interest to some on this thread include " " and my favorite, " ," about the greatest "gruppe" in rock history. And no, they don't strike me as much of a laugh either Not even still today ... I saw a Penny Rimbaud/Japanther split-billing show about two years ago that started with Rimbaud reading a horrible, shitty poem and then an old Crass film that was about 30 minutes of '80s Crass music playing during black-and-white footage of war casualties and such. Even most of us hearty souls who would go down to see such a show couldn't take it much more after a few minutes and Rimbaud admitted that the video was pretty much "unwatchable."
shen Posted 3 August 2008 Posted 3 August 2008 I'm not into punk, as I've never understood the point of it. I've had a preconceived broad idea that punk music is rahter ordinary and talentless and not pleasing to the ear. The tidbits I've heard have not made me change my view that punk music is just destructive and not creative. I liken it a bit to horror movies: They take a bit of piss out of the art of music by offending people with the tasteless and absurd sounds and lyrics. In that sense it can be entertaining, but I fail to see what the great thing is about punk. Can someone enlighten me on this?
Jordan Posted 3 August 2008 Posted 3 August 2008 2 letters and a surname. I can't even think of words that can accurately describe GG Allin and how out of control he was from birth (named "Jesus Christ Allin") to death (people posing for photos with him not realizing he was dead of an OD). Daggers Posted 6 August 2008 Author Posted 6 August 2008 C'mon then Einstein - educate the masses... Maybe not then, here - let me enlighten you: The fascist thing came about because everyone must be a fascist who doesn’t want to join the Socialist Worker Party. Because Tony Parsons and Julie Burchill were SWP they had that as part of their agenda. I didn’t agree with it or with RAR. Rough Trade refused to stock our records because of this. Just because you have your own opinion. We weren’t going to jump on any political bandwagon. Dave, Hugh and Jet thought it was really stupid. The world isn’t like that its more subtle. We refused to do RAR. We went on tour with the reggae band Steel Pulse who played with a strong political message. When they played the midlands I think Wolverhampton where they were from they were getting bottles thrown at them and all types of abuse from the a white Stranglers audience – our audience and they didn’t know what to do. We were so embarrassed that we walked on stage and apologized. Jet made a speech. These are our friends and if you don’t have the intelligence to respect their 45 minute set then you have no respect for us. If you have a problem we will be waiting by the side for you. Silence. And everybody listened to the set. The band who weren’t sure about white people got to know us as friends. That said more about RAR bullshit. I think RAR created more division than not. I could be wrong. JJ Burnell

My mum used to make our clothers with a Singh-er sewing machine, we hardly bought a stitch when we were young. She made me a pair of skin-tight purple hotpants when I was 15 - they were meant to be normal shorts but she went wrong. Is it any wonder I became a hate-filled mohican-sporting twat?! Bloody hotpants! You see if you can find anything macho about them on Google?
