Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 11 August 2008 Posted 11 August 2008 Phelps just finished third in a semi-final. Don't know if he was holding back or whether he was just below par.
Jordan Posted 11 August 2008 Posted 11 August 2008 Oh so the multi millionaire yank netballers beat china did they? what a suprise that is eh??? Olympics shouldnt be about people like them but more about people like the girl Cooke who won the Cycling. Basketball sucks. America sucks. My anus itches. Then don't sit on your ass watching the Olympics; that'll only make it worse! But seriously, I ... well, I know I shouldn't. I shouldn't respond, I should just laugh at the almost-funny few sentences above ... but I can't resist going on a rant. It's ironic that you write that because the original anti-professionalism rules that dominated and stifled the Olympics for years, although ostensibly to promote sportsmanship and the love of the game, were founded on élitist and pretentious English academic ideals of gentlemanship--notions that are distinctly classist. Yet you do not hesitate to mock American basketball players because they're "millionaires." And the last time I bothered checking--wait, I don't really have to check this at all--many Chinese players--most notably center Yao Ming--are blessed with plenty of wealth. These are also the same Olympics games that allowed Eastern bloc nations to field professional athletes for decades while the rest of the world was subject to much stricter definitions of amateurism. Good for Nicole Cooke--she won a gold medal at the Olympics and deserves rightly her laurels, but--and I'll admit I didn't know who she was until I just read about her--it's not as if she's some waif that's stumbled upon a Cinderella-like moment of glory. Cooke is cycling prodigy that's recovered from a few nasty injuries. And oh, she also happens to have been ranked number 1 in the world for the last two years. She won an exciting race, but she was arguably the favorite to win. What a surprise that is, eh? Meanwhile, you demean the achievements and lifestyles of the American basketball team and question their worth in the Olympics. One of those "millionaires," Dwyane Wade, is a true rags-to-riches story, born in the crime- and poverty-riddled South Side of Chicago in a broken home and raised for years by his sister (not to mention having been saddled with a misspelled name by his what-the-f***-were-they-thinking? parents). Others, like Dwight Howard and Michael Redd, are reputable philanthropists off the court. I also wonder how many players in this tournament grew up in families that couldn't even afford to buy a bike, but even if that answer is 0, you can't question these athletes' love of the game and pride in playing at the Olympics. Unfortunately, the Olympics aren't "about" them. However, to be fair to my side of this argument, they've never been about anything you think they are*--but be glad that they are helping to subsidize anything you decide is a feel-good story over the next two weeks. If you pay attention in life, you'll notice that you'll find much more of those stories in nearly every other aspect of society during the other 50. * - I've just been informed that they're about women's gymnastics (biathalon in the winter) and silly tracksuits.

Little old Britain which has apparently only got 3 Olympic size swimming pools in the WHOLE country. There's probably more than that in some redneck outpost in Texas. How embarassing for the Yank. Ha. Oh and as for your rant earlier it still doesn't change what Raj said earlier. America DOES suck. That's not envy, it's the truth.
Father Ted Posted 11 August 2008 Posted 11 August 2008 Daley and some other guy didn't do great in the diving where two people dive together

That's not envy, it's the truth. I'm sure we'll win more medals than the US in the pool. But seriously the terrible facilities we have in england is ridiculous, the huge amount of money the government recieve + the massive amounts of lottery money means we should have some of the best. But sport seems to be low on the list of priorities and has been for many many years. When I lived in germany they we're building a big housing complex about 4 miles from my apartment and apparantly if they build more than a certain amount of new houses they also have to build certain sporting facilities including floodlit football pitches with changing rooms. This I've learned is common practice throughout Europe. This is maintained by local councils, apparantly they subsidize a certain amount for every child so the more children the more money and more sporting facilities are built. My local council back home wouldnt even pay for the floodlights of the local football team to be connected to the main terminal, I believe it would have cost £7,000, that would help the community as a whole, have a local side which reflects the local people. But no, but they are spending almost one million pounds refurbishing a building for their new offices. Their old building was only 10 years old. Considering all these things its a minor miracle we win anything in events like the swimming.

Considering all these things its a minor miracle we win anything in events like the swimming. Yes but have those Euro Towns got £19million worth of grey slabs in their city centres? Having worked at the County Council it was clear to see that large sums of money were being spent on collecting central government measures on all aspects of the operation, particularly in areas relating to discrimination. Further large sums were spent on so called improvements to the operational procedures and personnel structures which usually involved whole teams of highly paid personnel over seeing them. In my first two years there I moved desks 5 times. So much public money is spent on ensuring that public bodies behave in a moral and just way, in many respects this is down to the media/public because every time there is a hiccup in procedures there is a public clamour for it not to happen again, even if the chances of it happening are virtually nil a whole new plethora of legislation, rules, procedural checks are introduced making the operating systems ever more complex and expensive to run.

Fox You Forest Posted 11 August 2008 Posted 11 August 2008 Watching the Olympic breakfast now. Every interview they have done has that loud hissing noise in the background it's starting to get on my nereves. Brilliant idea to hold the interviews there.
Father Ted Posted 11 August 2008 Posted 11 August 2008 How do you mean lucky? He edged it by about .08 of a second. It could have gone either way.
James. Posted 11 August 2008 Posted 11 August 2008 He edged it by about .08 of a second. It could have gone either way. Swimming races are often decided by fractions of a second... nothing to do with luck.
