Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 28 August 2008 Posted 28 August 2008 I'm not fussed either way. Sure, a cup run would be fantastic, especially if the team continues to put in stellar performances against bigger teams, but on the other hand, the team can now focus on the league (a priority), and the fixture list will be less congested. If we're going to go out of a cup competition though, narrowly missing out against a Prem side after pushing them all the way, and, arguably dominating them, is certainly the way to do it.
Sooper Steve's shin Posted 28 August 2008 Posted 28 August 2008 I'm not happy to see us lose but let's be honest about this for a second: did anyone seriously expect us to lift the League Cup? We were going to lose sooner or later and so an exit brimming with pride and without any injuries is the best we could hope for...and we got it. There's no loss of face from last night's result, there's little chance of a hangover to Cheltenham - probably the opposite as I think we are going to massacre them now, this Saturday. It's all about dreams! We've put up with some rubbish over the last few years, but we keep going back because occasionally we have those special days where everything goes right and we stuff someone 5-0. Similarly with the cups, everyone enters with the same chance and surely the same goal - otherwise what's the point? The League Cup has been a tournament where the Premiership put out reserves for a few years now; sadly the FA Cup is perhaps going the same way. Teams lower down are also concentrating their efforts less and less on these cup competitions so it's not unrealistic to think that a League One club could win the League Cup in the next few years. Let's not forget, we have a fairly good recent history in the competition. OK we were a lot better then, but even so would we have expected Leicester to win the League Cup twice when Martin O'Neill took over? After a gutting defeat, I cannot see how that could put us in a better position for Cheltenham than if we'd kept Bullard & Co out for another ten minutes.

I don't think the defeat last night was gutting - I believe it was inspiring if the comments of everyone who went are anything to go by. The rousing chorus they gave the team as they left the pitch seems to demonstrate to me an affirmed opinion of the squads ability now. As for Saturday, we only have 24 hours to go to find out

As for Saturday, we only have 24 hours to go to find out Glad to be out because we were never going to win this cup. Also it keeps us focused on the job in hand which is winning League 1. I accept that there may be 1 or 2 great away games that we are now missing but I would sacrifice these to go straight back up, and the more focus on the league the better. Hopefully we lose vs Hartlepool & can keep a fresh squad. Also last night the players & fans came out of the game with enormous credit and I could not have asked for a better performance from either, Proud
Rich Fox Posted 28 August 2008 Posted 28 August 2008 For me personally im not too bothered about the league cup because weve done it won it twice we three times to be more accurate we dont need the extra games but I would be gutted if were knocked out the fa cup early.

For me,I'd rather we still be in it ... you got to be in it to win it and we've done it before. But between the League cup, the FA cup and the League ... I'd love to finally see the City win the FA cup ... the league could wait til next season if need be!
DB11 Posted 28 August 2008 Posted 28 August 2008 Would I rather be in or over what? Over being not in it... of course
Thracian Posted 28 August 2008 Posted 28 August 2008 Definitely still in. We'd still be part of an adventure. Doing our best to win the next match we play should be an attitude that's fixed in stone. I'm amazed the question's been asked really.
BigFella Posted 28 August 2008 Posted 28 August 2008 In My Eyes ...Im Glad We Are Out , We Still Have The Johnstone And Can Focus On The League Better . Because At The End Of The Day Out Of This Season I Just Want To See My beloved Team Get Back To Where We Belong And Dont Get Me Wrong I Wouldnt Mind A Little Trip To Wembley
Raj Posted 29 August 2008 Posted 29 August 2008 Any sort of cup run is good for the club. Priority is the to get promotion from this League BUT any cup run is good for the club. I could keep repeating myself here but any cup run is good for the club. So in conclusion.....cup run is good for the club.
ThorpeAstleyFox Posted 29 August 2008 Posted 29 August 2008 As a fan I want us to win every game, however, if we are to be knocked out of the cup (which lets be honest we're not going to win) then I'd rather it was by an injury time winner against a Premiership team away from home. The lads can be very proud of their performance on Wednesday night and hopefully it has solidified the belief that we are NOT a League 1 team but a Premiership team on a five year bad run. A cup exit can destroy morale, which is why I am glad that we have been knocked out with a lot of pride rather than losing at home to a League 2 side. As for the rest of the cups I will not accept being beaten by any team below the Championship (maybe even the Premiership at home). This means that I want us to reach at least the 3rd round of the FA cup and to win the Johnstone Paints Trophy. :city: One last thing - winning cup games is never a distraction - but being humiliated in the cup can ruin a season!

Unless we sell-out a home game against top flight opposition I don't see where the 'good' comes from. I doubt MM was sitting in front of the fire rubbing his hands staring at the vats of cash he made from the Fulham or the Stockport fixtures.

A cup run would get people excited, give the club a lift, boost morale of players and fans, probably improve the atmosphere at the ground and club in general and also give opportunities for fringe players to get a game (e.g. Wesolowski against Fulham).

Shirley its a confidence boost to get a few rounds of the cup under your belt? And stop calling me Shirley.....

And stop calling me Shirley..... Would be a good argument last or next season - not this one...I'm not watching a league team low on confidence. And what's that quote about learning from defeat? Our young lads will have taken loads from Fulham that will be of benefit to us in the league. I appreciate everything you are all saying about it but I simply don't believe most of it applies this season.

True, but according to Thomas from Kilworth we are gonna piss this League so we need ABIT of opposition and fight in the Cup compos!!! Be nice to win a treble....League and 2 cups!!!!

TheFoxKid Posted 29 August 2008 Posted 29 August 2008 Im split. If we were still in it id b scared we would concentrate on it more than the league, id much rather win in the league than the cup. On the other hand a god cup run is good for the players morale.
Ultra Posted 29 August 2008 Posted 29 August 2008 The Fulham game came too early. The keeper and back four have played fewer than 15 games for us combined. In the end we were undone by a combination of quality and lack of experience. If we can follow up the defeat with wins at Cheltenham and Hartlepool, it will still have been a week's work well done, and the players (at least the non-international ones) will have earned their break.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 29 August 2008 Posted 29 August 2008 We were never going to win it so I'm glad we went out valiantly (and controversially) to a higher level club (I hate calling Fulham that )
Jimmy2Drags Posted 29 August 2008 Posted 29 August 2008 wouldn't say i'm glad we lost, but not too p*ssed about it. We can take heart in the fact we played well as a team & scored twice against a team 2 divisions above us.....and they didn't put out a reserve team. In fact, i reckon most of that team played in the Arsenal match too, so well done to us. no right minded city fan wants us to lose, but we got a good chance at winning League One & JPT, plus a possible extra round or 2 in th FA cup. This match will be forgotten by the time we do some poor sod's 6-0
