Lillehamring Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 ...i just went through my hard drive to put a bunch of new albums on my mp3 player, and ended up putting a few bits on that i had been recommended or heard via foxes talk... so, to those people, many thanks... the stuff that springs to mind are: Derby (a tip from Alexei, i think) M83 (off someones CD swap, be proud of yourself, that man) Cherry Ghost (sorry, can't remember, a few people i believe) Jim noir (ok, i knew of him, but only started to listen because of someone's CD swap) there probably are others, but for now thanks to everyone who is keeping me up to date without me having to listen to the radio so, list 'em here - who's opened your eyes and to whom....
Katy Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 I decided to open my mind a little bit and listen to some of Fez's weird stuff. Some of its too weird but some of it's ace so thanks Fezzlette
Trav Le Bleu Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 Pale Young Gentlemen (Ta Joe!) J Tillman (Thank you - Fleet Foxes (He's their drummer and supported them on tour.) The Be Good Tanyas (Heard it as backing to some TV programme and cos my wife is profoundly deaf the subtitles were on and the subtitles told me the name of the song so I was able to track it down) Midlake (Knew of but discovered on Emusic! Thanks to Jay for Emusic!) Sufjan Stevens (My brother (Mrs John Murphy on the forum) did me a sampler a while back but I only just got into it ) Then there's the new bands/artists like Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver, et al. Special thanks to Mark, Jay, Hairy, Smuts and Shen too for highlights I've yet to follow up on. EDIT - Ooops, just realised this is for bands discover thru FT only.
Head Honcho Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 I'm sure the first I heard of the Arctic Monkeys was on here

Finchy Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 Oasis! Nice one Ash, me and my Uni mates can't stop listening to them while we drink shandy and waste all that tax money you and your working class pals pay.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 any good? sounds like? Superb... sounds like this Think Fleet Foxes, Lambchop, Midlake - though For Emma is probably one of the more upbeat numbers
Daggers Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 Jay, James and Hairy have all pointed me to things I now love...but I'd never have listened to Turbonegro until DS plugged them (even if that was before 2008) and rarely a week goes by when I don't have a big Turbonegro session.

shen Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 Cooper Temple Clause - When Fez reviewed my mix, he compared them to Pineapple Thief. So I had to check them out They didn't disappoint Other names I've liked but haven't gotten around to look further into are: Fields (Fez), M83 (Flynny), Venetian Snares (Mark) and Jim Noir (Flynny/Joe) *I've yet to review/listen to Trav's and Jay's mixes, which were posted in 2008 , and I expect there to be a new name or two I'll like
Fez of Mahrez Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 I've loved stuff on lots of people's mixes that I hadn't heard before, particularly by JTB and Jay (my brothers in music) but also definitely from Trav, Mark, Shen, TPH, Flynny, Samilktray and Finners. Probably others that I've forgotten too. Just to try and pick out one or two of the best though - the first track on Trav's mix I have played a hell of a lot (Black River by Bomb The Bass I think?) and I am really grateful for that. And the Sway track Jason Waste that Samilktray put on his mix was one of the best things I've heard all year that I probably would never have heard otherwise. Been a bit slack on the music front recently but there's always a quality recommendation or two floating around here.

AoWW Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 Erm, there's been a few James. for Stateless (possible '07?) and definitely Waldeck Fez - Belleruche Daggers - Cut Copy Milktray - for persuading me to give Kanye a go Lib - Garden State OST general plugging (not sure who made me notice her first) - Santogold. Probably others I've missed but these are the ones that come to mind. And a big BOOO to all those who told me I'd like Fleet Foxes... I've tried... and I still detest them. Thanks, peeps.

Samilktray Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 Cant beat the feeling of recommending music to someone successfully.
AoWW Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 <_< You're right... Fez for Stateless. James. deserves the Waldeck recognition though.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 You're right... Fez for Stateless. James. deserves the Waldeck recognition though. Hmm. Only by proxy then cos I introduced him to them in the FT mix before last.
Finnegan Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 As an aside to this, I've slacked massively with the whole mix tape thing - but if it's still going on I really am going to make an active effort to sample some of my obvious, will-be favourites when I finally get my laptop back and I've had the concept for my own in my head for months and months. If you'll still have it, even though I haven't participated much this time around, I'll pop it up in a week or two and I guarantee a majority of it will be new to most of you - like it or hate it!
James. Posted 9 January 2009 Posted 9 January 2009 <_< Hmm. Only by proxy then cos I introduced him to them in the FT mix before last. Yeah yeah. Steal my thunder.
Alexikokopops Posted 9 January 2009 Posted 9 January 2009 I really should get involved in this CD Mix thing
