Uncle Monty Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 Got into electro atm. Mostly because im bored of all the guitar bands around, but also i like the pace of most tracks. Can anyone recomend any good bands/artists?
Finchy Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 Justiceeee! Insanely good album. Also Crystal Castles are mental.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 Shy Child are good. Friendly Fires are worth a listen as well, not too Electro though, just a tint.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 Justice is a decent starting point (MSTRKRFT and Digitalism as well). Try and get some Raw Man, also French. Fantastic stuff. And anything mixed by Boys Noize.
Part Of The Crowd Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 i have been doing this alot tonight ->
James. Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 Pendulum are good That's like someone asking "Can you recommend a good wine?" and me responding "Yeah. Carling".
Lillehamring Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 i'm kinda hung up on classification here - it's such an all-encompasing genre... is there a difference between electro and electronica? i'd advise you to look into some japanese artists, don't have any names in front of me tho... and, of course, i have to stand up for the scandinavian bands...do røyksopp count? do sigur ros and mum count.... dunno. which artists are you listening to so far, monty?
Trav Le Bleu Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 That's like someone asking "Can you recommend a good wine?" and me responding "Yeah. Carling". Spot on James.
hairy Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 LCD Soundsystem Crystal Castles The Fields I would say Justice are more dance than electro
lcfcrinaldi Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 Mr. Ozio, Tame Impala, Late of the Pier, Flairs, Crystal Castles, Justice (obviousely) and South Central.

I like Royksopp and sigur ros, but there a bit depressing, especially sigur ros. I have listened to a lot of Pendulum although it sounds like not many people seem to like them on here. Zero 7 - mind you i'd put Zero 7 in the same kettle of fish as Sigur ross and Royksopp. Does it Offend You Yeah are good, even better live. Mylo, Daft Punk etc pretty much all the main stream stuff. I also listen to a weekly podcast by Joachim Garraud called Zemix which is excellent but i think it has stopped now.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 The think I dislike about Pendulum is that on every track I've ever heard they play the intro to Inspector Gadget - Duh dan duuuh, duh dan duh duuuuh.
Jonezy Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 Electro is a pretty wide spectre.... But a few suggestions: Air - Mellow frenchmen. Burial - Atmospheric dub from London. Cut Copy - Happy Aussie electro with a hint of the 80's. Gotan Project - Electronic tango. French stuff. High Contrast - Drum and bass for the common man. The Knife - Swedish duo, different. Hate/love kind of thing. Lulu Rouge - Danish dub. Röyksopp - Norwegian electro outfit. St. Germain - Jazzy kind of thing. Thievery Corporation - Mellow americans.

To me that just looks like various electronic music (a lot of it very good electronic music, admittedly!). In my opinion electro is about bands like Soulwax, Digitalism, Justice, Simian, etc. Sounds like slowed down, mashed up house with a big, heavy beat and synths. Go to Shoreditch and you'll find ironic Russel Brand lookalikes off their face on coke dancing to it. It's all the rage.

Joe. Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 Stick a bit of Simian Mobile Disco on while you're at it as well.
Nationwider Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 If we're going to be pedantic - which I am - the real electro genre comes from the 1980's and originated in the US; a sort of hip-hop and funk fused by totally electronic instrumentation, in particular the Roland series of drum machines and bassline synths. Planet Rock by Africa Bambaataa is your reference point, but dance music has evolved organically for 30 years and so it's hard to put a start and end point on electro. It spawned, or at least inspired, early US techno - another hard-to-pin-down genre; Derrick May/Rythim Is Rythim for example... which in turn influenced the UK techno scene, and acts like early Nightmares On Wax, Scientist and LFO. Bookend all of that lot with Kraftwerk at the very beginning and acid house and the more chilled out balearic sounds like Sueno Latino at the other and you've got a huge melting pot of sounds that are still very relevant today, if you listen carefully and ignore the identikit euro-house sub-Eric Prydz shite that clogs the airwaves. For the pure electro sound, look up some Mantronix or Man Parrish; even Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five or early Run DMC for the more commercial angle. A lot of the aforementioned still sounds really good today. Even when you hear Hot Chip or Friendly Fires, you can get the Bambaataa/Planet Rock influence.
