Webbo Posted 2 February 2009 Posted 2 February 2009 Wesolowski Joins ArabsPosted on: Mon 02 Feb 2009 Leicester City midfielder James Wesolowski has today joined Dundee United on loan until the end of the season subject to international clearance. The 21 year-old midfielder spent a month with Cheltenham before returning to the Walkers Stadium in October following injury. But now the fit again midfielder will be reunited with former boss Craig Levein for a spell in the Scottish Premier League. Dundee United's next fixture is against Hamilton Accies on Saturday in the Scottish Cup. Why are Dundee Utd known as the Arabs?
skinnydipper Posted 2 February 2009 Posted 2 February 2009 In Dundee the most common name is Rab. If you're in a pub you'll often hear someone shout across the bar " Eh Rab "
MC Prussian Posted 2 February 2009 Posted 2 February 2009 Why are Dundee Utd known as the Arabs? Arabs used to be a term for the Dundee United fans only. Now, it seems they've stretched that one a bit.
Ultra Posted 2 February 2009 Posted 2 February 2009 Good luck to him. If the move works out, maybe it'll become permanent. Levein clearly rates him more than Pearson does.
FoxesFan123 Posted 2 February 2009 Posted 2 February 2009 I'm surprised this is the only departure today. Glad we haven't bought anyone in, we didn't need to waste the money, but i was expecting a few departures, ie the likes of Worley, Porter, Hayes, Hayles, and maybe one or two of our youngsters who aren't getting a look in.

They could still go out on loan though.
Daggers Posted 2 February 2009 Posted 2 February 2009 He's a loaner. Who'd be dumb enough to sign him with his history of injuries? Erm - aside from Allen that is? Hope it works out for the lad, he has no future here.

Hayles im surprised about as he would do a decent loan job at a lower league club but Hayes, Worley and Porter are shocking players. Porter hasnt got a look in at all and nobody as come near for a loan, Worley and Hayes must of been poor at Luton and Cheltenham. Pay them of by mutual consent and get rid!

Both young and still learning, need first team football desperately to help them progress but not much sign of them getting it here tbh, tis a shame they haven't gone out on loan but that could still happen.

Ok fair point with Worley! But Porter as been involved for a few years, his time as been up for a while! Obviously Thracian wont agree but hey thats life!

Thracian doesn't agree about Porter but is not going to restate comments about a guy who'll doubtless be gone from here shortly. As for Worley I've never rated him since the first three times I wached him in the Reserves. I've no idea why we signed him really.

Up until this season's brilliant transfers* has anybody had any ideas why we've signed half the players we have?! Edit: *over the last 4 seasons especially and this doesn't include Dickov
Mr Happy Posted 3 February 2009 Posted 3 February 2009 As for Weso, good luck to him. Definately not getting into this sucessful winning league1 team so a loan to get some match fitness will do him good.. unless he gets injured again
Webbo Posted 3 February 2009 Posted 3 February 2009 In Dundee the most common name is Rab. If you're in a pub you'll often hear someone shout across the bar " Eh Rab " You little fibber <_< http://www.dundeeunitedfc.co.uk/index.asp?pg=216ARABS The collective noun applicable to supporters of Dundee United. It is now fairly common currency among tabloid sports journalists, though some remain confused as to whom it actually refers, sometimes mistakenly using it to describe the team. Just as Hibees are the team while Hibbies are the fans, Jam Tarts are the team while Jambos are the fans, so Dundee United are the Terrors while their supporters are Arabs (the definite article is rarely used). The origin of the term is guaranteed to spark debate amongst United fans and there is no definitive answer. It is fair to say that the most commonly accepted version dates back to the mid-1960s. The winter of 1962/63 was particularly harsh and United had already been denied two matches due to Tannadice being icebound. Desperate to play a Scottish Cup tie against Albion Rovers in January 1963, United hired a tar burner of the kind used by road-layers to melt the ice. However the predictable after-effect left the playing surface all but devoid of grass. Undaunted, the directors ordered several lorry-loads of sand, spread it around, painted some lines on it and, astonishingly, the referee pronounced the ‘pitch’ playable! United won the tie handsomely, prompting some observers to comment that they had taken to the new surface ‘like Arabs’. The supporters, however, quickly hijacked the name for themselves, the next few matches witnessing some fans wearing crude approximations of Arab headgear. The practice never became widespread until the late ’70s and early ’80s when it was seen at cup semi-finals and finals. By the early 1990s even the official club souvenir shops were selling replicas of Arab keffiyehs in tangerine and black. By that time the term ‘Arabs’ had become more widely used, largely as the result of regular references to it by the popular United fanzine The Final Hurdle (see fanzines), which first appeared in 1988.
davieG Posted 6 February 2009 Author Posted 6 February 2009 Meet Little Gattuso.. Dundee United's new boy James Wesolowki Feb 6 2009 By Chris Roberts DUNDEE UNITED new boy James Wesolowski's Leicester team-mates call him the Little Gattuso. Now the Aussie midfielder aims to live up to the tag after joined the Arabs on loan for the rest of the season. Leicester's Patrick Kisnorbo - the former Hearts defender - revealed the 21-year-old's nickname which he has earned because his combative style resembles that of the AC Milan battler. And Kisnorbo, who has shared a dressing room with Wesolowski for three years, tipped his countryman be abig hit with Craig Levein's side. Kisnorbo, signed for the Tynecastle side by Levein, said: "We call him the Little Gattuso. "He chases everything and is a busy midfielder who never gives you a rest even in training. "He breaks things up, takes the ball and battles hard for 90 minutes. The fans up there will love him." Wesolowski turned to Kisnorbo for advice when United came knocking and the latter didn't hesitate to tell him to pack his bags and head north. Kisnorbo said: "James asked me what I thought he should do. Craig was a fantastic manager at Hearts so I told James he would be playing for one of the best around. "I couldn't say anything but good things about Craig and Peter Houston and have great respect for them. "It will be a great move for James and I'm sure if he stays clear of injuries they will get the best out of him." Kisnorbo reckons Wesolowski deserves some good fortune after breaking his leg twice - once as a result of a challenge by Celtic's Bobo Balde - and then fracturing his ankle last year. He added: "James has come back successfully and is performing to the best of his ability. "He is a great player and everyone hopes it goes well for him up in Scotland. He is one of the unluckiest players around."
Alf Bentley Posted 6 February 2009 Posted 6 February 2009 Kisnorbo to Dundee Utd in the summer for a romantic reunion with Levein, do you reckon? Babylon Posted 6 February 2009 Posted 6 February 2009 They probably couldn't afford much of a fee, though... Good job he's on a free then.
STUHILL Posted 6 February 2009 Posted 6 February 2009 Good move for WESO, still has potential to become a useful player for us but just not at the moment. Will need to prove himself up there and be a stand-out player for them if he wants a future at leicester I think! Kisnorbo definately on his way out in Summer! Could still play in Championship but could see him going Dundee!
davieG Posted 10 February 2009 Author Posted 10 February 2009 Published: 10/02/2009 DUNDEE United midfielder James Wesolowski does not bear a grudge against Celtic defender Bobo Balde for the tackle which broke his leg during his Leicester debut four years ago. The 21-year-old, who has signed on loan with United until the end of the season, was carried off with a snapped shin after a Balde lunge during a pre-season friendly at the Walkers Stadium in 2005. The Australian was making his first start for Craig Levein’s Leicester team but after surgery spent a year on the sidelines recovering. Balde phoned the youngster several times during his recuperation and apologised for making the tackle, so Wesolowski – who has been jinxed with a further leg break and an ankle injury since – has no hard feelings. He said: “It was a bad tackle in what was a friendly game, so it wasn’t the nicest challenge. “It was my debut as well so it wasn’t the best. Bobo phoned me a few times afterwards when I was recovering and apologised. “It’s not something I like to dwell on, it happened and I got over it so I’m just looking forward now. “I’m mentally tough so although what happened put me out injured for a while, I think I’m a stronger person for it.” Despite his injury problems, Levein was keen to bring Wesolowski to Tannadice to help offset the loss of midfielder Scott Robertson. Levein always rated the Australian and has an option to buy him in the summer if he impresses.

It is not nearly as intense from anything I've seena and I'd imagine he would find the time and space to flourish.
Lichfieldfox. Posted 18 March 2009 Posted 18 March 2009 I hope we keep him as I really rate the lad. Weso has made 2 appearances for Dundee, 1 as sub and played a full 90 mins in the 2-1 defeat at Motherwell where he was MOM according to official website: "Man of the Match: a very good first half showing from Paul Caddis, but he was just shaded for man of the match by fellow recent recruit James Wesolowski who provided an excellent spring board for United in central midfield."
