Kilworthfox Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 I think Steve has been decent at this level. His place in the team has been justified as he is a excellent foil at this level, and I am sure Fryatt would be complementary regarding his input this season. However next season is a real worry as Howard is: Not likely to gain pace Not likely to be able to jump any higher The only asset players should develop over time is awareness, and I don't believe that Steve is good enough at the moment, let alone next season to be able to play in the Championship. I hope I am wrong about this, he came to Leicester with the memories of him playing for Derby in the Championship and he was a battering ram with their 1v0 wins at the end of the 06/07 season. That form has never been seen in a Leicester shirt. Even in this division Steve is still very one dimensional, if he can't have an impact in the air or holding up the play, then he has little impact at all. We have witnessed some excellent performances from Howard, but also some very poor performances also, the problem however with his poor performances (IMO) are not down to lack of effort, but because the game he is involved in does not require his special strengths, I.E if he is asked to run the line, or be the 1st line of defensive he is very limited in what he can do. I believe that we will need a better, more mobile player who can offer what big Steve can, but at the very least with more pace and maybe with an ability to be more defensive up front and have more stamina.
Cobbo Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 He'd be fine in the Championship. He has been for years now - bare in mind last season we played the wrong system for him. Now we play a system that suits him far better.

Now we play a system that suits him far better. i agree that with decent wingers & crosses we would be playing to his strenghts, however we then have a question over the defensive qualities our central midfield has, as we started off this season with 2 wingers and we were less convincing than we are with a 1 winger system?
Flynny Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 Need an alternative.Absolute must. Absolutely wank last season, when we probably played a bit more long-ball. Bollocks to the 'system' not suiting him - we hit more long balls and he won barely any. Anyone who can remember his peformance against Ipswich when Gareth McAuley, in a cameo up front for the last 5 minutes, eclipsed Howard's entire day's work in the form of winning one header, should have good reason to worry. Which, as I just stated in the thread about next week, is why we should stick Chambers up front and look to play in a more footballing manner next week, to make sure we can still do it. Howard's been exactly what we needed to succeed in this division, but he won't worry many Championship defenders.

If NP plays Chambo, I will got out, buy a hat, then eat it I must remember to take some HP to Colchester
Flynny Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 If NP plays Chambo, I will got out, buy a hat, then eat it I must remember to take some HP to Colchester Pretty unlikely, true. Like to see it though.
Kilworthfox Posted 15 March 2009 Author Posted 15 March 2009 Pretty unlikely, true. Like to see it though. Same here pal. I rekon that ****ov is more likely to start with his old man legs.
Flynny Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 Same here pal. I rekon that ****ov is more likely to start with his old man legs. He'd better not. He's been ineffectual and looked likely to get sent off every time I've seen him this season. I'd rather see Hayles and us hit less long balls. Hayles is big but still not really a target man. As for next season, I guess we could just sign someone taller, fatter and faster?
Blue Foxes Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 If we need a new striker for when we are in the championship (which i think we will) i would like to see us try and get Simon Cox, he looked like a great player in a struggling team, but still scoring goals. I'd like to see us use pace in the team instead of hoofing it up and hoping someone gets it.
Daggers Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 He'll be fine. What we need is one or two flair attackers to go alongside him and Fryatt.

Good shout, was excellent against us
Simi Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 All the people ruling Howard out based on last season, lets just take a moment to think about Matty Fryatt's performances.
Webbo Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 We need a younger faster version of Howard. I can still see him playing some games for us or coming on from the bench. I don't think he'll be a regular starter for us though.
Daggers Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 We need a younger faster version of Howard. Elvis Hammond?
dandannieldanok Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 As for next season, I guess we could just sign someone taller, fatter and faster? I would love to see Jon Parkin down at the Walkers, even if he turned out to be crap I'd still love to see him play for us.
Corky Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 Elvis Hammond? The composure he showed when slotting home his penalty yesterday- sheer quality.
lildave3 Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 Let's not forget Steve scored at Old Trafford once. No way was that his goal.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 He'd be fine in the Championship. He has been for years now - bare in mind last season we played the wrong system for him. Now we play a system that suits him far better. i totally agree with you i think he will probably do even better if any thing
Koke Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 All the people ruling Howard out based on last season, lets just take a moment to think about Matty Fryatt's performances. The thing is Fryatt is 23 and has improved a lot from last season, despite it being a lower level. I still think he could be useful in the Championship. Chris Iwelumo was completely out of his depth for his entire career and only turned into a half decent Championship player at 28/29. This season may have been the kick up the backside and confidence booster Fryatt needed. By the time we start next season Howard will be 33, less mobile and less effective. I remember that Ipswich game Flynny mentioned quite clearly and he was absolutely woeful. He's had some good performances this season and also some very bad ones. We definitely need a new striker, faster and more mobile, ala Simon Cox.
SMX11 Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 Steve will be fine for another 2 years in my opinion, but we will need another similar type of player to push him

Lets not forget that all of our players played poorly last season - look at matty! why single of howard?
