He reckons we should have stood by Craig Levein.

Alan Maybury believes Leicester City were wrong to sack Craig Levein as manager three years ago and trigger a merry-go-round which eventually cost the club their place in the Championship.

The 30-year-old Dublin-born defender, who returns to the Walkers Stadium with Colchester United tomorrow, worked under four managers following the departure in 2006 of Levein (below) before being released at the end of last season.

He said: "Perhaps I'm biased because Craig took me to the club (from Hearts) but I think he should have been given more time, though I can see why they did it as we had won only once in 10 games.

"Rob Kelly (Levein's successor) steadied the ship but someone was needed to take it on to the next step and that's where (chairman) Milan Mandaric came in."

Unfortunately for Maybury, the departure of Kelly in April 2007 left him on the sidelines for almost a year until he was allowed to go out on loan by Ian Holloway.

Maybury said: "It was difficult at Leicester because I was playing every week under Rob Kelly but, after he left, I hardly featured at all and that was frustrating."

The right-back was put on the transfer list by Martin Allen after making 85 appearances for City and made a loan move to Aberdeen 14 months ago, appearing in the Scottish Cup and in the UEFA Cup against German giants Bayern Munich.

"I didn't get much of a chance with Allen, Gary Megson or the caretakers," said Maybury.

"When Holloway came in, it was like a revolving door at the club and I went through it.

"They had about 25 new players and managers leaving for differing reasons so the place was crying out for some stability.

"You take the case of Iain Hume (who moved to Barnsley in the summer of 2008).

"He was a striker who was asked to play in right midfield and then as a striker again which just shows what the players had to contend with in terms of the differing styles of managers.

"But I was still surprised they went down. I thought they would win at Stoke on the last day of the season."

Maybury was eventually deemed surplus to requirements at the end of last season.

"I remember when I was released by Leeds United in 2001 and I thought my world had ended," he said.

"But when you get older, you deal with these things a little better. I had thoroughly enjoyed my time at Leicester."

Maybury believes that Mandaric's relationship with current boss Nigel Pearson has been pivotal to the success of the Foxes.

He said: "You can never be quite sure about the relationship that Mandaric has with his managers, but he decided on Pearson as the one for him.

"I listened to what Pearson said in the close season and realised that he knew what he was doing and that he is also a strong character.

"City are flying and, barring some disaster, they will go up. The feel-good factor must be all around the place.

"They've lost only three league games all season so, if they take that sort of momentum into the Championship they will be fine."

Maybury says he has been given a new lease of life under manager Paul Lambert at Colchester, who were also relegated from the Championship last season.

"He has done an unbelievable job. We were in the relegation places (second from bottom) when he took over and now we're an outside bet for the play-offs."

Colchester's form at their new ground, the Weston Homes Community Stadium, has been indifferent with just seven wins, but they have secured eight away victories, including wins at Leeds and Oldham, as well as drawing at MK Dons.

Maybury said: "We will be underdogs at Leicester, but we will thrive on that.

"They have had an unbelievable run with just one defeat in 25 games but we go there with no expectations.

"It's just been frustrating for us here.

"We seem to get in a good position and then play a team below us, as we did with Crewe on Saturday (Colchester lost 1-0), and it knocks us back.

"It has been a difficult season. Our old ground at Layer Road was our fortress and we moved to the new ground and other teams enjoyed it too much. It's taken us time to settle."

Plays for Colchester.

Expect him to play a blinder tomorrow.

Maybury was crap. As for standing by Levein that has to be a joke! The team had no direction, & his transfer policy was illogical IMO ref Hammond!

Hammond was a panic buy after we sold Connolly.

Like Stephen Hughes, he played well when he first came to the club. He was switched to left back and right wing at various times; it didn't really allow him to settle. Admittedly, he had poor games, but played well in patches too. I seem to remember that he was refused a move to Sunderland at one point and I think that affected him.

Yes Maybury, of course we were going to lose our place in the Championship, only two years before under Levein.

Against West Brom where he just completely took their player out? :giggle:

He even had the cheek to dispute it with the ref.

Yes, it was just such a shit tackle it was unbelievable, and he didn't even need to tackle him at that point!

Another player good when he first come and then everything went to his head.

I still say if Hughes bulked up he was more than good enough for the CCC. Infact he reminds me a bit of King.

Maybury was a decent player partly ruined by the way he was used by the many crap managers we had, there were so many more that were far, far worse than him.

His performances were very creditable when he first joined us but ended up being crap like everyone else including let's not forget, Clemence, Oakley, Howard, Fryatt etc.

He started off alright, scored some cracking goals (at home to Wolves and Derby, and away at Sunderland), but gradually he struggled and got worse. Being shoved around the pitch to play in virtually every position didn't help, but he just wasn't up to it.

He play superbly tomorrow though <_<
