davieG Posted 29 March 2009 Posted 29 March 2009 Leicester City striker Matty Fryatt was this evening crowned League One Player of the Year at the prestigious Football League Awards in London. The 23-year-old has scored 28 goals to date for the campaign and has played a major part in helping Nigel Pearson's side to the top of the league table. He said: "I am obviously delighted to receive the award. It has been a great season for me to date, but it won't mean anything unless we achieve our goal of promotion. "However, I don't see this as an individual award. It reflects on the club as a whole and I was just simply there to pick it up on everyone's behalf - and that goes for the fans, players and staff." Fryatt re wrote the record books earlier this season when he became the first Leicester player since Derek Dougan 42 years earlier to net 20 goals before Christmas. He reached the landmark with back-to-back hat-tricks against Dagenham & Redbridge and Southend United and then gave Leicester fans the Christmas present they wanted when he signed a new three and a half year deal. The forward joined City from Walsall for an undisclosed fee in January 2006. He has made a total of 134 appearances during his career to date at the Walkers Stadium - scoring on 41 occasions. Fryatt has also picked up PFA and Powerade player of the month awards during the current campaign.
Bert Posted 29 March 2009 Posted 29 March 2009 Congratulations Fryatt. Let's hope he can mark this award with a goal or two on Saturday.

Katy Posted 29 March 2009 Posted 29 March 2009 I had this sent to my phone by LCFC news and was about to post about it. Well done Matthew! Ebanks-Blake for the Championship and Grant Holt off of Shrewsbury for League 2
Corky Posted 29 March 2009 Posted 29 March 2009 Well played Fryatt, hope you can now get the goals to clinch promotion Should have been Howard though
Guest Bilo Posted 29 March 2009 Posted 29 March 2009 Delighted for Matt, well deserved not only for the prolific scoring but for the workrate he puts in. Without wanting to sound like Ron Manager, he really does put in a shift. It would be nice to see him round the season with a couple of crucial goals, give him confidence going into next season.
Dan Posted 29 March 2009 Posted 29 March 2009 Congratulations Fryatt. Let's hope he can mark this award with a goal or two on Saturday. You must be kidding if signing his new contract wasn't enough of a jynx
Joe. Posted 29 March 2009 Posted 29 March 2009 Oh look, all the winners were strikers. How surprising!
Dan Posted 29 March 2009 Posted 29 March 2009 You must be kidding if signing his new contract wasn't enough of a jynx But on the plus I must congratulate him
Flynny Posted 29 March 2009 Posted 29 March 2009 This is almost as premature as my!... erm... I've said too much...
Finnegan Posted 29 March 2009 Posted 29 March 2009 This is almost as premature as my!... erm... I've said too much... *Wipes eye* You bastard.
Finnegan Posted 29 March 2009 Posted 29 March 2009 Took me a while to work out this wasn't actually a wind up.
ASH17LCFC Posted 29 March 2009 Posted 29 March 2009 Well done Matty, let the Howard nerds say what they want. He is the best PLAYER in the league and it was proven tonight.
J.Lisemore Posted 29 March 2009 Posted 29 March 2009 Just about nicked it, although he needs to score this saturday to prove to me he really is the best striker in this division.
Shrenchel Posted 29 March 2009 Posted 29 March 2009 There can't be many teams where the fans would call it ridiculous and a wind up that the 28 goal striker of their table topping side wins player on the year. Same old leicester eh.
Guest Mickyblueeyes Posted 29 March 2009 Posted 29 March 2009 Well done Matty great reward for getting your backside into gear in pre season. I do find it strange that with 6/7 games left a decision has been made when a player can still make a impact for his side at both ends of the table.
Uncle Monty Posted 29 March 2009 Posted 29 March 2009 Well done Matty, now let's get back to scoring ways.
waccoe1975 Posted 30 March 2009 Posted 30 March 2009 Well done Matty, let the Howard nerds say what they want. He is the best PLAYER in the league and it was proven tonight. Talk about drawing a name out of the hat. Beckford - 31 goals in 36 games Fryatt - 28 goals in 46 games
MC Prussian Posted 30 March 2009 Posted 30 March 2009 Ridiculous. Simon Cox anyone? Next season at the Walkers, maybe? Well done to Matty, although I'm amazed by the early award ceremony, too. Still six or seven games to play for. A bit premature, eh?
GLC Posted 30 March 2009 Posted 30 March 2009 Next season at the Walkers, maybe? Well done to Matty, although I'm amazed by the early award ceremony, too. Still six or seven games to play for. A bit premature, eh? It is, Howard could still score 25 goals
BoneDog Posted 30 March 2009 Posted 30 March 2009 Congratulations to Fryatt. Quite a few of his goals have been superb finishes after a bit of lovely skill. Alot of great turns on the ball and then BANG. I watched em all again the other day. And his work rate has been 100% in most games. He's put the effort in all the way
