Leicester City fans have been spoilt, says Wayne Brown

Wayne Brown believes Leicester City will cope with the pressure of staying ahead of the pack in League One - even if the supporters get twitchy.

The 31-year-old on-loan Hull City defender admitted the 2-0 loss at Peterborough last weekend gave City's detractors more ammunition following the 1-1 draw with his old club, Colchester, at the Walkers Stadium the previous week.

Brown, now fully recovered from a calf injury, said: "When you have a loss, people knock you and I've seen the punters around the ground starting to get agitated, but you take that into the next game and prove them wrong.

"You could say the fans have been spoilt this season and there are massive expectations. The fans expect us to get three points and I'm fine with that. It is down to the team to appreciate it and go into every game expecting better from ourselves."

Although Peterborough have closed the gap on City to just four points following their victory, Brown dismissed any notion that Nigel Pearson's side was experiencing a blip.

"I wouldn't say that," said the former Colchester man.

"The table does not lie and, at the present time, we are the best team in the league. But it is all about being the best team in the league when the season ends on May 2."

Brown was involved in another promotion chase last season as Hull secured promotion to the big-time through the play-off route, and he says the characters in the City dressing-room are a similar bunch.

He said: "We've got a young squad and perhaps a couple of them believed the hype when a lot of punters and people in the press were saying that we were home and dry.

"It is then down to the old heads like myself, Steve Howard and Matt Oakley to get around them and keep their feet on the ground. Believe me, there is still a lot of work to be done.

"But you look around the dressing room and I think we have all the ingredients. There is talent in and around the starting 11, and then it's gelling it together as a unit."

Brown would love to retain his place in the squad for the run-in, but the centre-half positions are the most competitive.

Even though he had recovered from injury for the game with Posh he found himself on the bench, and it was Australia international Patrick Kisnorbo who was handed his first start since his own injury problems dating back to last November.

Bulgarian international Aleksandar Tunchev was first-choice centre-back before suffering a cruciate ligament injury against Crystal Palace in January, while Michael Morrison has made 27 starts.

Brown has made four appearances and is still to be on the losing side.

He said: "Someone like Jack Hobbs has done exceptionally well, but only because there has been competition for places.

"€˜Skip' (Kisnorbo) came in and was exceptional against Peterborough. I thought he was our top man.

"It must have been hard for him having been out so long, and it can be difficult to make an impact straight away, but I thought he was outstanding.

"It will be interesting to see who the gaffer picks tomorrow because we've all given him a headache, but that is what you want."

Brown acknowledged that his former club, Colchester, did City a "massive turn" in midweek with a 1-0 win at third-placed Millwall, who remain 12 points behind Leicester.

He spent three seasons at Layer Road, making 159 appearances, and was the only outfield player to play every minute of every Championship game in 2006-07. He was voted U's player of the season for 2005-06.

"That was a great result for us but I was not that surprised," he said. "They did us a favour, but, really, our destiny is in our own hands,"

Yeah, it's been a bed of roses since 2004 hasn't it. I think we deserve a teeny weeny bit of 'spoiling' this season Wayne yeah?

I don't think the fans have been spoilt, we've shown massive support to the players, especially away from home, considering we've droppped a division!!

The moaners\booers are a minority, the majority are looking forward to next season with delight!!

The fans have been spolit this season :crylaugh:

We have had to endure many poor, uninspirational performances, reminisent of last season, except instead of losing games by a goal, or drawing games we should have won, we seem to have won a lot by 1 goal, and drew games we should have lost.

Most of our performances have been very similar to last season. You could count our really good performances this season on 2 hands.

We have somehow managed to get the results this season, where last season was the opposite.

Without really playing that fantastically ourselves, we have put ourselves in a great position, which just shows the poor quality of the league.

I think his quotes may have been taken out of context.

I suspect this is a journalist trying to get the most eye-catching headline. Brown goes on to say that we expect three points (from every game, presumably) and that he is "fine with that". He doesn't sound like he thinks we've been spoilt.

Journo: "Wayne, could you say the fans have been spoilt this season?"

WB: (taken aback) You could say that, but I think...

Journo: Thanks, that's my headline written.

Surely not?

Our local tabloid wouldn't dream of doing something like that..

Equal parts headline-quote-pulled-slightly-out-of-context and Brown not picking the best choice of word. I think he meant something much more inocuous.

I've said that all season, I couldn't agree more.

We've been that crap for so long, it's going to take a long time to sort out. To be honest, I would rather we had this season where we know that there's more to do, but have the confidence of getting results than another season struggling in the Championship.

I see this season as a springboard for better times.

I hope this doesn't come back to haunt me....

This.

The fact that we are in a position that Forest or Sheffield Wednesday couldn't get into in their first season in League One is an achievement. The latter actually finished near the relegation zone when they were relegated, imagine the moaning on this forum if that had happened to us! I can't understand people complaining about our season to be honest, we're top and almost certainly promoted at the first attempt while Leeds have showed everybody that this is no easy league. I'm relishing next season and hoping for a vast improvement over our previous three seasons in the Championship.

Very good. Now I hope he now gets back on the training ground to recover the sort of fitness levels he needs to have any chance of being an asset should he ever get in the team again.

To be honest that statement could be attributed to any player at this time of the season (albeit with a daft choice of word). I think he was basically trying to reassure everybody that the wheels haven't fallen off and everybody was still focused!

Comes across as egocentric and disrespectful, to me.

Must be true then.

Must be true then.

I'm aware of the nature of fucking opinion, Bert, christ. I was answering a question. What's the problem?

Harsh.

If he'd been here a bit longer I'd be less inclined to say so but to come into a place on loan and say that doesn't sit right with me, nor does the bit about 'old heads' where he seems to like himself a bit too much.

I don't read that much into journo soundbites.

I'd put odds that what he actually said doesn't come across in the manner which you find so offensive.

On the other hand, if he did say it that way then I vote we put bamboo under his fingernails.
