CosbehFox Posted 24 April 2009 Posted 24 April 2009 Might not be thread worthy. But someone at work has just taken a picture of the Liberty statue. It's holding a trophy and wearing a city scarf!!!! I wonder if it will still be there tonight!

CosbehFox Posted 24 April 2009 Author Posted 24 April 2009 http://www.leicester.gov.uk/newssite/index01.asp?pgid=9224 Here ya r, I thought it was spontaneous. Not a council thingy.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 24 April 2009 Posted 24 April 2009 Sod off Leicester City Council! They have consistantly opposed all the cities sports team when they have wanted to expand and actively demolished some sports sites (Blackbird Road, Granby Halls), yet as soon as any of the teams has even a modicum of success they can't wait to bathe in the reflected glory.

Someone should report them for not wearing appropriate PPE for working at heights! Id love to see Filbert with a hard hat, fall arrestor and safety boots on.

Not forgetting the cycling stadium, a decent City Centre swimming pool to replace St Margarets and there refusal to allow LCFC to extend /alter Filbert St forcing us to move to the resultant debt ridden lego box stadium - all whilst allowing DeMontfort University the freedom of the city and carte blance to knock down decent buildings and to build any inappropriatly sited monstrosity they want. Awaits Ultra to say I haven't the right to complain because I currently live in the County.

What complete tosh. It was the Council who approved the building of the Way and the current expansion of Welford Road. Granby Halls had passed its sell-by date and was costing too much to maintain, while Blackbird Road was sold off in a private deal in which the Council was not involved.

Ultra has a point here, to be fair. While I'm not exactly certain how helpful/co-operative the council have been towards the sporting teams of Leicester.. I'm sure none of it is malicious. And you can hardly expect them to control private deals which they have nothing to do with - afterall, we all want to see the regeneration of Leicester, itself, it's just everyone looks at it from a different viewpoint. Secondly, I find your goading of Ultra a bit difficult to swallow considering the amount of times you've moderated others and closed threads when people are just having a bit of fun. Time to practice what you preach and moderate yourself, big man.

Ooh, what a bunch of bleedin heroes! they approved the walkers, after forcing us to move - regardless of public protest they could have approved the expansion, like they did the student accomm need st mary de castro... they approved welford road cause it has a stonking great hotel and whatnot attached to it. yes, granby halls was buggered, but what did we get to replace it....zip. ...garbage, the council are a bunch of money-minded parasites.
iancognito Posted 24 April 2009 Posted 24 April 2009 The City council has continually over the past three decades held this club back through opposition of plans and lack of support wherever the club has tried to evolve. Filbert Street would still be there if they'd put a compulsary purchase on the final few houses on Burnmoor Street and ignored residents parking fears (the Walkers is has really helped with that!) but they said this couldn't be done. Two years later they put a compulsory purchase order on the Bowling alley on St Peters Lane when it became apparent they could attract John Lewis into the city centre. Pitch rotations, other viable sites around the city all were rejected because they didn't give a shit about the football if it didn't involve their smug faces pictured at a civic receotion with the latest play-off/cup winning team. Tigers got their proposals through - and Waterloo Way party renamed - because half the councillors have season tickets at Welford Road and they saw a good opportunity to cover up the desolate wasteland that Granby Halls left behind and the questions it was raising about their decision to knock it down willy nilly. They're not to blame for everything I'll grant you but have a look into where most of the developments in this city fell down and Soulsby, Willmott and that infuriating windbag Bodell-Stagg are usually involved somewhere. **steps down from soap box**
General Smuts Posted 24 April 2009 Posted 24 April 2009 Did Woolers just make a serious contribution to a thread? World's gone mad.

Filbo was finished. Knocking down 300+ houses on two sides wouldn't have changed that fact. they approved welford road cause it has a stonking great hotel and whatnot attached to it. Nothing to do with it, the approval came in two separate stages. The hotel and associated developments will provide extra jobs though, which the city could well do with right now.. yes, granby halls was buggered, but what did we get to replace it....zip. I'd like to see a new arena too, but other citizens seem less bothered, perhaps because they prefer their council tax to be spent on stuff like schools and roads.. ...garbage, the council are a bunch of money-minded parasites. That's a very astute observation, delivered all the way from Oslo. I'm sure Ross Willmott and co. will be deeply wounded.

Time to practice what you preach and moderate yourself, big man. I presume that's directed at me as I'm a moderator even though Ultra has not responded to my post. As for goading Ultra that's not the case I've expressed a view re the City Council he has in the past stated I'm not entitled to an opinion I believe I am - I can't really see that's goading from me Besides we've met on numerous occasions I know Ultra is big enough to defend himself against any criticism of the Council and my comment re waiting for Ultra was in any case in jest as he well knows. Apologies if I'm barking up the wrong tree here.
WardyisPukka Posted 24 April 2009 Posted 24 April 2009 I agree with Davie G the about DMU building anything they want , Im a student there and ever since I started there has been constant building work , these buildings cost way too much (thats where my fees go <_< ) and there not that amazing to be honest No new city centre swimming pool which is a bit of a joke, some of my uni mates go to braustone or wigston pools??? Plus where were the council in helping the charlotte stay open ?? I cant believe now there isnt really a music venue that represents students or young peoples tastes i.e indie/pop/rock Cant really say DMH represents this through its programme only really Summer Sundae!!

The plans for Filbert Street fell through not only because of the objections from residents, but because they were astonishingly badly drafted. For one thing, we would have had to relocate to Nottingham or Coventry for at least one season while the pitch was rotated. Secondly the capacity of the stadium would have been limied to 20000 - permanently! The renaming of Tigers Way came about as a means of recognising the success the rugby team have brought to the city. There are no more councillors with season tickets for Tigers than there are with those for City. In both cases, the numbers are in single figures. And two of the names you mention actually left the Council SIX YEARS ago.

You have a point about DMU. However they are building a new swimming pool to replace St Margarets. The velodrome fell into disuse once a new one was built in Manchester and all the events moved there. There's not a lot any council could have done about that.
The People's Hero Posted 24 April 2009 Posted 24 April 2009 I love Speedway. If there was one of these Velodrome type things in the City during my time there, I would definitely have gone regularly.
Vestan Pance Posted 24 April 2009 Posted 24 April 2009 Let's not forget our Council granted permission for the Tigers expansion, only to tell us after the building work started that Tigers and City will no longer be able to play on the same day due to the added congestion from to increased capacity of Welford Road. Stating that the emergency services will find it harder to fight their way through the traffic. Shouldn't the planning commitee have thought of that before granting permission for the expansion? Who will give way on the fixtures? I won't be Tigers will it?

However they are building a new swimming pool to replace St Margarets. The velodrome fell into disuse once a new one was built in Manchester and all the events moved there. There's not a lot any council could have done about that. Most likely after knocking down the Pump and Tap and the Bowstring Bridge. As for the Velodrome I can't see how one in Manchester was a serious alternative to the average competitive cyclist. It would also have been worth consideringputting a roof on it and turning it into a sports/leisure/music venue but I guess selling it to property speculators to build more flats that none of the locals want seem the ideal solution
Jon the Hat Posted 24 April 2009 Posted 24 April 2009 Let's not forget our Council granted permission for the Tigers expansion, only to tell us after the building work started that Tigers and City will no longer be able to play on the same day due to the added congestion from to increased capacity of Welford Road. davieG Posted 24 April 2009 Posted 24 April 2009 That is not a basis on which to reject it though is it? Maybe not but didn't they insist on all sorts of environmental and transport impact assessments when the Walkers was being planned and the insistence on an LCFC park and ride scheme - not that that ever got off the ground. I haven't seen that proposed for the Tigers who will be virtually doubling their capacity
Daggers Posted 24 April 2009 Posted 24 April 2009 This thread seems to have overlooked that the picture is wank and everyone in it look like twats.
Babylon Posted 24 April 2009 Posted 24 April 2009 other citizens seem less bothered, perhaps because they prefer their council tax to be spent on stuff like schools and roads.. And a £60million + theatre. A note on university buildings, when the road improvements were being done around the magazine. Didn't the council say it was to make it more of a feature / gateway into the city. If that is the case, why the hell have they let the uni build a whacking great big building a few feet away, pretty much obscuring it from view until you are almost on top of it.

Stating that the emergency services will find it harder to fight their way through the traffic. Here's another one who's just come off the spaceship. So the Council should ignore the advice given by emergency services should it? I don't think so. Nor do many other city residents. Shouldn't the planning commitee have thought of that before granting permission for the expansion? Who will give way on the fixtures? I won't be Tigers will it? This point has been made before, but here it is again just in case you missed it... THE TIGERS CHANGE KICKOFF TIMES FAR MORE OFTENTHANCITYDO
Vestan Pance Posted 24 April 2009 Posted 24 April 2009 That is not a basis on which to reject it though is it? Apparently not, we'll all have to get used to a lot more friday games I reckon.
