England Bid for World Cup 2018

Interesting to see the English parochial mind at work here - completely absorbed by trivia ('no footballing heritage') irrelevancies ('empty stadium after 2018') and petty local rivalry. Some of this would be forgiveable if you also chose to look at the seven ton bull elephant crapping all over your front room.

How many of you are aware that your 2018 bid finance of £15 million + will probably not be raised (and that your own government is dragging its heels on loaning it an awesome £2.5 million)?

That's sorted - the FA and the local authorities have seen to that. FIFA demanded financial commitments before the bid could even be tabled.

How many of you are aware that there is no public money OF ANY DESCRIPTION on the table for any of the stadium refurbishments (or newbuilds) and that many proprietors of the earmarked stadia have never committed resources to their improvement (do you really think that a hoodlum like Ken Bates - and lets be quite clear that is EXACTLY what he is - would fund the conversion of the Elland Road scrapyard into a modern football stadium for a World Cup?)?

Unfortunately, this statement is completely untrue. There would be shedloads available through regional development funding. That's why the likes of Plymouth and MK were so desperate to jump on the bandwagon - and why Bates and whoever's running the owls this week wanted to stay on it.

But whatever our resident scummy brummie may tell us, most folk in Leicester (or Derby for that matter) would NOT be happy to see their taxes being used to fund Forest's white elephant of a stadium.

How many of you are aware that the proposed newbuilds in Bristol and Tottenham are unlikely to go ahead even if by some miracle England won the 2018 bid?

Those areas wouldn't do anything to jeopardise their place on the bandwagon. Planning permission wouldn't be an issue.

How many of you are aware that the listing of the Olympic Stadium violates FIFA's rule about venue capacity (it will be reduced to 25,000 after 2012 due to pressure from, amongst others, the FA itself)?

Presumably the stadium would be expanded again so it wouldn't be a problem.

How many of you are aware that many of your A List celebrities and sportsmen have been told their promotional services will not be required for the 2018 bid (eg David Beckham) even if they are offered 'pro bono'?

:source:

Sometimes its the very small insignificant details that give the truest insight into what is really going on. A little Reuters birdie told me a few minutes ago that the midnight Sky Sports News (UK) bulletin devoted barely four minutes to the second most important announcement in the 2018/22 bidding process and that this feature came half way through the programme after items on the managerial departures from QPR and Reading.

That may indeed be significant - or it may tell us what Uncle Rupert thinks about a tournament that (as yet) he is not allowed to screen.

But for what it's worth last night's BBC 10 o'clock news didn't give the bid much prominence either.

Now, what does all that tell you em? Not only does it tell you that your bid is dead in the water it also tells you what I have been banging on about for far too long - your powers that be don't want 2018, 2022 or any other four figure cup.

They seem fairly committed to me. But their ineptitude will ultimately be exposed. Not that Russia (your predicted hosts) are likely to benefit from this.

If Leicester had a decent transport network the city may have had more chance of being added to the potential world cup venue list but the city has some of the worst public transport in the UK, you only have to travel a bit north to find a city with a decent integrated travel system which has been picked above Leicester

There is a lot of rubbish spoken about how much a group game is worth to the host city anyway and England won't and shouldn't get the 2018 world cup.

Because Nottingham, as a city, pisses on Leicester and, whether you like it or not, the club has a better heritage.

And MK - far better infrastructure than City.

Any of you grumpy about this need to remember Leicester have just dodged a financial bullet too.

And none of you will be able to get a ticket anyway.

Fuck the World Cup.

Agree with Daggers, Nottingham has more hotels, better transport, more restaurants more entertainment facilities etc!!

MK, has no history but has closer and better transport links to London!!

All in all, i'm not too fussed, our city is very overcrowded as it is, and all in all, i don't the city would benefit in the long run!!

Why aren't we bidding for this as a British Tournament?

We could have used any of the following then:

1. Wembley Stadium - London - 90,000

2. Croke Park - Dublin - 82,500

3. Olympic Stadium - London - 80,000

4. Old Trafford - Manchester - 76, 212

5. Millenium Stadium - Cardiff - 74,500

6. Celtic Park - Glasgow - 60,832

7. St James Park - Newcastle - 52,387

8. New Everton Stadium - Liverpool - 50,000

9. Emirates Stadium - 60,332

10. Hampden Park - Glasgow - 52,103

Please get yourself elected on to the FIFA board.

Sorry I am not that big of a brown-nosing, corrupt piece of doo doo's.

I reckon Australia for 2022 and Russia for 2018. They couldn't two ****s about travelling distances.

Do you really not know why? It's because we all have seperate football associations and are thus recognised by FIFA as 4 different footballing nations (that's England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland by the way - how on earth you think Dublin is part of Britain I don't know).

It's for this exact reason that the Scottish, Welsh etc. FAs are so opposed to the idea of having a GB football team - because they know if we compete together once, there will be considerable pressure for us to amalgamate our football associations in the future, particularly from those FIFA nations who have always resented the fact that as Britain, we've got 4 FAs in the Federation. And course if we ever did combine, the Welsh and the Scots know that England would dominate hugely and their voices would be drowned out...

Sorry babes. When I hear the same completely nonsensical argument 17 times in one afternoon I get somewhat riled. Come round later yeah and we'll gently toss each other off.

But I don't need my cam chain adjusting or my tappets set.

I'll come if he just focusses on my big end.

Because as co-host nations, if the bid were successful, it's require FIFA to grant all of them auotmatic qualification, which just wouldn't happen.

I'm sure Scotland would still miss out on qualifying somehow ;)

I was actually more refering to a joint bid between us ..... I am quite aware of all of the above.
