The Champion Blues

This time last May, there were no words to say,

nothing to ease what happened that day,

the dreaded fear, we all felt last year,

as we helplessly slipped into the third tier,

and some of us cried, some just hurt inside,

as each shot went wide and our hopes were denied,

we rallied in vain, we walked away in the rain,

not knowing when we would be back again,

But as August drew near, and things became clear,

optimism returned as we got into gear,

our boys came to gel, and soon you could tell,

the spirit returning, would serve us all well,

a man who'd looked broken, of whom we'd all spoken,

started scoring for fun, his belief awoken,

and they both came here, MK and Tranmere,

and they both left too with no points to hold dear,

We trekked to London, and we stood in the sun,

and we beat Leyton Orient by three goals to one,

we loved Morrison and King, we rose up to sing,

as we threatened from central midfield and the wing,

and we all paid our money and travelled to Scunny,

where we all froze like statues cos it wasn't that sunny,

but through the fatigue, we held our intrigue,

and it all became worth it, "we're top of the league!",

We were strong in defence, and the Tunch was immense,

and he kept strikers quiet with the pressure intense,

knowing that we would score, and three points once more,

would see us ascend back through that trap door,

we drove many a mile, to get to Carlisle,

and Berner and Kingy, they made it worthwhile,

though Posh couldn't beat us, Leeds seemed keen to meet us,

but even the "mighty" Whites couldn't defeat us,

we had Davies for days, and his play did amaze,

and then he was gone, so we found different ways,

to put teams to the sword, Lloyd Dyer my Lord,

somehow Dickov and Mattock both scored,

Kerrea at right-back and Fryatt in attack,

and Tom Cleverley had teams on the rack,

and Oakley improved, and we couldn't be moved,

and the boys showed their class and we coolly approved,

But we wobbled a tad, and our home form was bad,

and we lost on the Wirral, that made us all sad,

roll on Edgar Street, the comeback complete,

thanks to Max Gradel's magician-like feet,

and forward we powered, and Super Steve Howard,

rose up against Leeds, the corner devoured,

we knew it was won, and nearly all done,

and we travelled to Essex and all had some fun,

And we won two to nought, now we could not be caught,

and Jack Hobbs and Wayne Brown were rapidly bought,

and during our run, many wore shirt one,

Martin, Hendo, Warner, Stockdale and Bunn,

so from all in blue, some thanks are now due,

to Big Nige, Craig Shakespeare and Stevie Walsh too,

grounds may have been small, not the greatest football,

but that was my favourite season of all.
