purpleronnie Posted 1 June 2009 Posted 1 June 2009 You can't imagine the terror of the passengers on that plane. RIP
Maybes Posted 1 June 2009 Posted 1 June 2009 We dont know they're dead yet though do we?Hope. It might be a bit cynical but you can hope all you want, they will be dead. Tragic.
Asha Posted 1 June 2009 Posted 1 June 2009 I'm flying for the first time on the 16th, and news like this gives me a lot of anxieties about it. Rest in peace those who've lost their lives, tragic accident
Shrenchel Posted 1 June 2009 Posted 1 June 2009 To be honest, I find the jokes a little tasteless. My other half flies for business a fair bit, and things like this always make me fear the worst. Yeah I know. I just feel so sorry for the people that had relatives on that plane. As they're probably French.

These things happen once in a blue moon, air travel is the safest way to travel and someone showed earlier!
Guest Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 All the stories are now being told of those who were on board.
jonno24 Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 Terrible news and altho planes dont just dissapear it looks like it crashed into the ocean and will probably never be found again. rip
Collymore Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 I can see this being on Discovery next year. Probably some Brazilian mechanic fitted the wrong toilet seat or something, it's usually the smallest thing that then escalates. It's quite worrying that a plane can simply disapear in the age of GPS.

All aircraft have to have at least 2 working back-up systems to any critical systems, it won't be something simple that has failed, it would have to be a group of failures in several unlinked systems to cause this. Ask any aircraft engineer and they'll tell you loads of stories about bits falling off planes at take-off, systems failing etc and the flights having no problems, the passengers don't have a clue what goes on day-to-day on airliners.

Just going off these Discovery programs where it's often simple human error e.g incorrect calibration of new fuel gauge, not checking the authenticity of a new parts(apprantly there's a frightening amount of fake aircraft parts floating about) I use to have a scanner and listen to the aircraft to ground mechanic frequencies all the time, the amount of problems planes use to have were frightening! I remember being on a plane once and was listening to the pilot complaining to his engineers that he couldn't get rid of some ice that had accumulated somewhere! He was threatening to turn back! They're a lot more informal on these channels so he might have been joking.
lou Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 Apparently the area is 5 times the size of Europe, according to Sky News! Cant see them finding anything really. It just makes you realise how massive the Atlantic is! Im so sorry for all involved, chances are they will never find anything or know what really happened. RIP

The discovery channel stuff generally over simplifies the chain of events to make better tv, there are so many checks and balances nothing is ever simple in commercial aviation but serious negligence could be a cause. My dad had some really worrying stories about when he worked on the Concord prototypes but he still flew on the thing for business.
lou Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 The way I look at it is there are risks to everything..... Tysons daughter died in her own home last week! Im far safer in a plane than on the roads and if the worst did happen Id be dead and not left suffering with horrible injuries like some car crash victims are. Im not going to let worrying about things stop me enjoying my life and seeing the world.

Rocket-Ron Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 Don't worry - it's great It is. You get to watch films that you would never normally dream of watching("a man who went up a hill but came down a mountain" anyone!). On a screen thats to small even if it is only a 1½' away.

It is, on Business and First Class to Australia...That's how I roll My favourite flight was the one to South Africa. Front row seats = lots of leg room When I went to Spain (last holiday) it went SO quick I'm used to flying to Barbados, see Brazil was two flights and took an age
