Matchday Ticket Price Leap

From the Merc

Leicester City's ticket prices are going up for the vast majority of fans by £2 for most Championship matches and by £4 for the bigger league clashes.

The higher increase is for six 'platinum'-rated games at the Walkers Stadium.

These are against local rivals Derby County and Nottingham Forest, the recently-relegated trio of Newcastle United, Middlesbrough and West Brom and the Boxing Day clash against Sheffield United.

The cheapest adult tickets for these games for non-members will be £27. The other matches will be classed as 'gold' games and the cheapest adult price for non-members will be £25.

However, some City fans will be able to take up a 'Just The Ticket' discount offer which will get them into a section of the West Stand for £20.

Supporters Club chairman Cliff Ginnetta is disappointed but chief executive Lee Hoos said the move to increase prices at the turnstiles was not a decision the club had taken lightly and that, with bigger discounts now available for members, the cost of watching City still represented value for money for everyone.

City say this is only the second price increase in the past seven seasons and will provide additional funds for manager Nigel Pearson as well as further developing the club's Academy.

Chairman Milan Mandaric said: "The loyalty of our supporters throughout our League One season was fantastic.

"Thousands of those supporters have purchased season tickets which has enabled the club to secure the signings of Jack Hobbs, Wayne Brown, Robbie Neilson and Chris Weale."

He added: "The momentum that Nigel and his team have built over the past 12 months will be invaluable for what promises to be another exciting season at the Walkers Stadium."

Cliff Ginnetta, chairman of the City Supporters Club, was disappointed at the price hike.

He said: "The increase will be difficult for some people given the current economic climate but, having said that, there are some great deals for the fans.

"I thought it is something which might have happened but I'm still a bit disappointed. People are a bit short of money and it's tough out there and I'm sure the club did consider looking to hold prices.

Hoos said: "We have endeavoured to ensure that watching football at the Walkers Stadium is affordable for all of our supporters.

"The increase in pricing is not a decision that we have taken lightly. We are certain that our pricing structure offers value for money for everyone.

"We have stuck to our principles of being a family-focused club and as such all under-eights can attend matches for free in the Marks Electrical Family Stand, under-12s are just £5 across the stadium and this year under-18s can pay just £10 to watch a 'gold' fixture."

Matt Davis, of the Foxes Trust, said the price increase might discourage "walk-up" fans – the ones who make a decision to attend games a couple of hours before kick-off – but backed the 'platinum' games as long as they are offset by discounted matches.

The club says there will be a selected amount of £20 'Just the Ticket' adult seats available in the Upton Steel West Stand for each home match as well as themed fixtures to help celebrate the 125-year anniversary.

Yesterday, City announced that tickets for all home fixtures will be on sale from Saturday, July 4,

Ginnetta welcomed the initiative.

He said: "It's one of the better ideas – not an original one but a good one. It means supporters can get their tickets for the big games and it also helps the manager in the transfer market."

Lance Tomlyn, of the Independent Supporters Association said allowing fans to buy tickets for all home games would save on queues but raised concerns that fans will now "cherry-pick" their games.

This is odd? <_<

Hmm... On one hand, I can see that the club is in need of some cash - just look at the Early Bird ST offer this spring...

But our tickets weren't cheap to start from, anyway.

Is there a ticket price comparison for Championship clubs somewhere? I can't do all the research myself, but I thought our tickets were on the more expensive side.

A great way of saying thanks for the "magnificant support" from last season would have been to freeze ticket prices.

But this is business at the end of the day so there's not much point having a moan about it. This is how we roll.

is this the price we pay for having no sponsor? and how is west brom a "platinum" rated game?

Bloody hell, they were expensive anyway...

Yes they were, I can't understand why the club would do this. Tickets were cheaper when we were struggling financially, before Mandaric arrived. Disappointing decision to say the least, it's almost as if the club are forcing your hand to buy a season ticket if you want any kind of value for money, rather than make football accessible to everyone in and around the city.

Do you think that we might have been struggling financially because tickets were cheaper?

No, our problems were far more complex and deep than simply ticket pricing, they weren't particularly cheap back then anyway, now they're just ridiculous.

Costs go up. If revenue doesn't then you are just saving up problems for the future. See Gordon Brown.

Costs go up yes, but not drastically, 90% of costs going up at this club over the last 18 months have been due to Mandaric's dreadful management of finances and people. The club could easily manage without this price rise.

as quoted i will now cherry pick my games...having a family who all like to go its far too expensive, also working shifts does not allow for me to go to every game.....but i would still like to get to one home game a month.

Maybe, but I'd wish they'd fooking say that rather than trying to spin it like it's still a magnificent bargain selfllessly dished out to the fans by the club.

Anyway they can stick it up their arse. I'll probably fork out for two home games maximum now.

And it won't effect the attendance detrimentally.

We will see a return to Championship-sized crowds and the club will be increasing its revenue.

The problem only starts when we stop winning easy (first day of the season) and return to scraping out draws and lucky wins...then choices will be made and price will come into it on the lead up to December.

Daggers said it

It is almost like they assume we are going to be some kind of wild force this season, and are putting up the prices while the bandwagon is still in motion.

Very disappointed with this move really, but it isn't unexpected really.

I am just crapping myself for the season ticket prices for 10/11 now

Thats great, £27 for a ticket when you get to sit in a plastic stadium with a load of bastards moaning at you constantly if you dare to try and create an atmosphere or even stand up? :o. Not to mention the fooking Chelsea Dagger! Trains alone cost £30 to get to Leicester when I dont have much money at the moment and the last couple of experiences at the Walkers were Blackpool and Sheffield Wednesday at home. Doubt I will be making many trips up to the Walkers now to be honest.
