Leroy Lita on his way to Middlesboro'

I meant Wellens. As of 2006 the mean average salary of a championship player was £197,750 or £3/4k a week. As Wellens plays for Doncaster who had one of the lowest wage bills in the league I would say it's reasonable to estimate Wellens wage at around a similar level.

Similarly I would guess that few of the current squad (Mad Dog recruits aside) earn that much.

From what the Doncaster gaffer was saying after we signed him though he said that we offered Wellens a deal he couldn't turn down and it was the right decison fincially for his family or something or other... If I remember correctly

The PFA figures show a breakdown by position and age. If Wellens has suddenly become Mr Average for a 28-31 year old midfielder that would put him on £200,000k+, which is still around £4k. Doncaster are a very small but well run club, as last season was their first at championship level and Wellens had not signed a new deal he (assuming he's Mr Average again) would still be on a league one average for a midfielder which is as best I can recall 75-90k pa. A wage of 4k pw would be a major improvement.

Lita is worth the wages in my opinion. Not only has he proved himself at this level, he's proved he can rattle 'em in at Premiership level. Phillips would be a short term fix, Lita would be a long term solution. I'd much rather pay Lita £14k a week than pay Phillips similar dough. The signing of Lita would also send out a message to the rest of the Championship that we expect more than mere consolidation.

We're often termed as an ambitious club, let's prove it.

Lita wouldn't command a transfer fee. £14k a week would be about £730k for a year. Worth it I'd say.

Wellens is easily on £8-10k.

Signing Lita would turn heads in this league and that's exactly what we have to do.

We've been off the radar for a season and we can be easily dismissed at the moment as 'making up the numbers'.

If we want to make an impact, then make an impact signing.

If we're not going to do it through 2 million+ signings, then get this guy in on a free and pay the wages.

No way is DJ on £20k a week, sorry I dont believe that for a second. He cant be! :o Please God he cant be :)

Don't believe it, but after his wage rise he is.

I do think this could potentially be a good signing but there is some niggling me about why nobody as signed him up already

You would think someone of Lita's reputation and ability would be snapped up on a free pretty sharpish. I'm not a fan of the man, well the way he comes across, but he's definitely talented and he is what we need.

Are you seriously saying that wages have increased 100% since 2006? Between 2000 and 2006 they didn't increase by that much. We've signed him from Doncaster ffs, they pay less than Blackpool who have a wage limit of around 3k! Why on earth would we offer someone a 7k weekly increase when we are the only interested party.

Campbell would have to have been offered a shedload to have been tempted from the brummies when they were in the Premier last time.

But if he's on £20k/week, no wonder we're struggling to shift him. :(

Where on earth has this 20k figure come from? It's on record that "Holloway said: "We have tried to sign DJ Campbell, but Leicester went up last season and that means DJ's wages also went up. His agent has made it totally clear that he isn't going to take a drop from the money he is on."

As Campbell's wages are twice as high as Pool's current top earner, it almost certainly rules out a move. "

That would mean Blackpool are paying someone 10k per week! Who on earth in Blackpools side would be on that much? DJ is on 9k per week.

From the Merc

Leroy Lita remains at the top of Leicester City's wanted list as they continue their search for a new striker.

Chairman Milan Mandaric said today that City are still working on bringing in a forward before the Championship season starts and the Mercury understands the club have made enquiries about the former England under-21 international.

We understand City have spoken with Lita's representatives twice since the striker was released by Reading at the end of last season.

It is also clear that City boss Nigel Pearson faces strong opposition to capture Lita.

There is reported interest from Premiership new boys Burnley, Stoke City as well as Newcastle United, West Brom and Middlesbrough, who dropped out of the top flight last season.

Mandaric said: "We are working as hard as we can on the striker situation to see if we can bring someone in.

"But we're talking about someone who can make a difference. There are a lot of strikers around but we need someone who can add a different dimension.

"There's little point in signing someone who is not going to bring any more that we already have."

City have also been linked with Birmingham striker Kevin Phillips. The 36-year-old was the Blues' top-scorer in the Championship last season with 13 goals.

Lita is well-known to Pearson from the City manager's spell with England. The Congolese-born striker played against Italy in the first game at the new Wembley for England under-21s when Pearson was in charge.

A former Chelsea trainee, Lita joined Reading from Bristol City in the summer of 2005 for £1m.

He scored 15 goals in 32 games during his first season, but has since been sent out on loan at Charlton and Norwich.

Lita will not confirm who he has held talks with and said: "I'm not saying if I've spoken to Premiership or Championship clubs."

While City look to strengthen their attacking options, star striker Matty Fryatt remains sidelined with an infection following a hernia operation.

Fryatt has yet to appear in a pre-season game and it is unlikely he will be involved in tonight's friendly at League Two Chesterfield at Saltergate (7.45).

Bert's a reliable source mate, and if he says DJ's on nearer £20k, I'd believe him. It's not totally out of the question when you consider we have a mad owner and a manager at the time who was horribly incompetent.

I just hope whatever the outcome, its fast. I dont want us to be messing around trying to sign this guy for him to reject us for Newcastle or something and then we have 1 week before the start of the season. Lets hope its sorted in the next few days...

I really hope we get him. But with those other clubs after him we're going to have to offer him a good deal and guarantee him 1st team football I think which means its likely Fryatt will have to drop to the bench. Also think we should get Lambert as competition for Howard, Im fairly sure Huddersfield had a £1 million bid accepted but couldnt agree personal terms.

I love the way the media takes 2 seperate bits of information, and makes that some kind of evidence that Lita is on his way. Of course we are hoping to sign a striker. Mandaric said that weeks ago.
