No major news about him, but I was talking to a few Geordie lads next balcony to us on holiday about him and how much of a legend he is to them. This is more of an appreciation thread I would just like to dig out.

Great influence to English Football.

Great negative influence you mean?

Far be it from me to speak ill of the living dead but a coach who dropped permanently one of your great talents from the England squad for 'not tracking back' and only called up one of your greatest ever national players under protest because he felt 'he was as daft as a brush' can only be considered a malign influence.

Your 1990 national team was probably the only one in the post war era that compared technically with the best of Europe and South America. Yet they only gave one good display at Italia '90 (you should have walloped the Wermacht in the semi's - who was advising your keeper?). Why? Because Robson stuffed their heads full of negative thoughts. I'll never forget his idiotic histronic reaction at the FIFA draw for the round robin phase of the tournament.

You drew Holland, Republic of Ireland and Egypt.

Good god, i'd thought he'd died when I saw his name on a thread.

Expect to see a few RIPs from people that don't read threads or even beyond the last post. :P

Likewise.

I think this guy is a legend - and he has given years and years to football and achieved a great deal. I'd strongly suggest reading his biography, its a great read and you learn a lot more about the guy.

You drew Holland, Republic of Ireland and Egypt.

So you pick on one aspect of his long career to have a go.

A man who has achieved so much with great humility, consideration for others and yet with controlled passion. A true Gentleman in a sport where very few exist and where egos abound.

“Nobody wins anything on their own,” said Robson. “This award really is an extension and opportunity for me to say thank you very much to everybody who has supported me. Without the players, without the people that worked for me and that I inherited I wouldn't be here tonight.”

This was a true sporting great being thanked for decades of devotion to the game but it seems that he is one of a dying breed. It was refreshing to see someone who has played against Garrincha, managed at the Nou Camp and been knighted by the Queen remain so rooted. He’s never boasted like Mourinho, never bad mouthed rivals or played mind games like Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, and never lost touch with the fans.

What Robson has achieved in his distinguished career we will probably never see happen again. He guided Ipswich Town to FA Cup and UEFA Cup triumphs and two runners-up finishes in the league. He came closer than anyone since 1966 to leading England to World Cup glory when losing on penalties to the Germans at Italia 90.

Following his spell as England manager, Robson joined Sporting Lisbon, where his Portuguese translator was a certain Jose Mourinho. The pair then moved on to FC Porto and led the team to back-to-back league title. Barcelona was the next club to benefit from Robson’s leadership and in his time there the club won three trophiess in the 1996-97 season when Robson was named European coach of the year. No other English manager has moved abroad with such success.

Robson is admired and respected by all for his achievements as a player and manager, but equally for his enthusiasm and good nature. His lifetime achievement award was fully deserved and the reception he received was a true indication of how much the public admires and respects him. It should also act as a lesson to many of the over-hyped, over-paid and out of touch players and managers in the Premier League – this is the kind of sporting hero we are all looking for.

Radovan, the bloke has been a success in both England and abroad, winning trophies with small-ish clubs such as Ipswich and coping with demands of some of Europe's toughest clubs.

Also, he took England the furthest in the World Cup since 1966, and was knocked out on penalties.

The man is a legend, he's a gentleman and was a top manager.

I can't speak about his personal qualities - I've never met him.

As for Ipswich, I think I'm right in saying that under Alf Ramsey they won the (very) old Division One title in '62 immediately following a promotion?

Perhaps I was over subtle earlier as nobody so far on this thread has mentioned the players that Robson failed to appreciate. So I'll be more expicit this time:

How can any coach who did not wish to select either Glen Hoddle or Paul Gascoigne for the England squad be considered a positive influence on English football?

Mr Caravan you need to get some new material. Negativity towards English football and in particular a man such as Bobby Robson is now just boring.

You were much more interesting when you were Chandler.

RIP.

Read a story about him, which had me in stitches...

Ameobi interview...

jorno: "So Shola, do you have a nickname at the club?"

Ami: "Not really no."

J: "What do the lads call you?"

Ami: "Shola."

J: "What does [manager] Bobby Robson call you?"

Ami: "Carl Cort."

Bobby is an absolute hero, look what happened to Newcastle after he was shown the door and utterly betrayed by his **** players, am i right in thinking that he has been a success everywhere he's ever been?

To be honest RC is the only person i've ever heard slate Robson :frusty: baffling!

Remember a funny story where he was signing his autobiography somewhere when a bloke came upto him with his book, while bobby was signing it the bloke asked, "so how many have you signed today bobby?", to which bobby replied while puffing his cheecks and smiling "oh hundreds", then when the bloke walked away and opened his book to look at the signature it read "yours sincerely, bobby hundreds" :crylaugh:

Not really baffling. He says controversial things to get a reaction. Which is what he gets.

Apart from Newcastle - and England.

Although he did guide us to our best place in a major overseas tournament. It wasn't his fault that certain players bottled it when it came to penalties.

He was relatively successful- got them into the European Cup twice.

England and Germany legends will compete for the Sir Bobby Robson Trophy at St James' Park this Sunday (on ITV4).

Look out for Peter Shilton, Les Ferdinand and Steffen Freund among the line-ups.

Most fans would have been happy with that..

But the geordie fans and board wanted a trophy - and he couldn't deliver one.

I suppose, but what they'd give for those seasons now.
